The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Oooooh! Pretty! Do you have any plans to share the plans? I'd love to build my own EDS one day! Those handles sure are pretty, too ... any thoughts on doing extras / limited runs of some parts?

I'd be happy to share the plans for anything you see in all of this. I'll also mention to Turner that people might be interested in some parts of the EDS as well.

Like the floor pallets, I suspect it's going to come down to volume when it comes to pricing. They're still figuring out what numbers would make it work for them in manufacturing pallets, and I'll pass that along here when I get it.

With a lot of the metal underway, we started to working on some of the MDF that'll go under it. The first shapes were these large corridor dividers. Even in rough form, they immediately transform the corridor into something that's suddenly a lot more recognizable.

Unfortunately, we didn't take a lot of photos in the next month, so there's a bit of a jump here as we assemble a bunch of bits that I don't have separate photos of. But with a lot of metal assembly behind us, and the MDF moving quickly, the broad shapes of the design finally started to appear in physical form.

The bridge chair assembly.
Attachment:
ChairRawAssembly.jpg
ChairRawAssembly.jpg [ 379.34 KiB | Viewed 154215 times ]

The bridge. Sitting in the chair is a test piece of upholstery from a subcontractor we'd found. You can also see some of the dark metal strips that'll cover MDF pieces that should look and feel like metal to the viewer. The MDF structure behind the chair will store the electronic brains for the corridor, with the lower piece being a removable vent to allow access.
Attachment:
BridgeRawAssembly.jpg
BridgeRawAssembly.jpg [ 704.7 KiB | Viewed 154215 times ]

The same, but taken from the other side, looking through the bridge window frame.
Attachment:
BridgeRawAssemblyWindow.jpg
BridgeRawAssemblyWindow.jpg [ 729.68 KiB | Viewed 154215 times ]

The MDF base for the bridge ceiling console was coming along. Here it is, upside down, attached to the bridge frame.
Attachment:
BridgeCeilingConsoleMDF.jpg
BridgeCeilingConsoleMDF.jpg [ 315.37 KiB | Viewed 154215 times ]

Meanwhile, machining was still trucking along on the finer metal pieces. Here's one of the mechanisms on the airlock door.
Attachment:
AirlockDoorMechanismsRaw.jpg

Next, more of this.

I would have to assume a bit of both. This amount of man hours and labor and materials, we are looking at a 100k plus for this build out.

Just out of love, actually, and perhaps more than a small amount of obsession.

Thanks, that is wonderful to hear. I've been lucky enough to be a part of big creative projects, where the result is larger than any one of the people involved, and the individual stories of people applying their craft are always the most interesting. So his Alien Makers documentaries are the best.

Also, I don't know if he knows it, but his web page is down!

The EDS cover plate and lever mechanisms. The big button at the top right of it is the button that you'll slap, after pulling down the levers, to spring the latch on the EDS lid. That change, and some others we made to the EDS, were largely driven by a desire to reduce the complexity in our already-very-complex production. Some other changes were aimed at reducing the complexity of electronics involved, based on bad experiences I've had with devices that combine electronic and mechanical components.

Starting to lay out the vestibule display section. Not in the frame yet, but there'll be a set of display cases in the middle as well. At this time, the tall shapes at either end were intended to be upholstery covered, reminiscent of the Nostromo's living quarters (although darker). But later we converted the nearest pillar to a vertical display case, and did the same to the one in the corridor opposite it.

VestibuleDisplaySpace.jpg
VestibuleDisplaySpace.jpg [ 685.59 KiB | Viewed 154141 times ]

Bits of the EDS fabrication coming along. You can see one of the corner pins in its clamp sitting on top of the box. Another is screwed into the top of the vertical pillar that'll be pulled out of the enclosure to the left. You can also see the half section of the pillar that'll be sliding to the side to reveal the button that must be pushed.

CNCing MDF to form the underlying shapes for the doors was now fully underway. If you remember from the material tests, our plan was to build them up with multiple layers of MDF, and then cover them with a few layers of colored epoxy. In all these photos, the MDF sheets are just lying on top of each other. Assembling them is yet another step.

Door frame for the main door at the end of the corridor. In the middle is a section of the bridge side wall (you can see where it goes back up in the design photo a few posts back)

The main door itself, at the end of the corridor.
Attachment:
CNCEndDoor.jpg
CNCEndDoor.jpg [ 319.92 KiB | Viewed 154078 times ]

One of the single doors on the side of the corridor, leading to the bridge. These will be setup like pocket doors, sliding into the wall to the right.
Attachment:
CNCSideDoor.jpg
CNCSideDoor.jpg [ 276.03 KiB | Viewed 154078 times ]

The airlock door that you enter the corridor through. The right hand side will slide left to reveal the real single door exit. The four rectangular insets towards the middle, 2 on either side, will be where the airlock pin mechanisms go.
Attachment:
CNCAirlockDoor.jpg
CNCAirlockDoor.jpg [ 483.83 KiB | Viewed 154078 times ]

The side double doors. More airlock pins in the central four insets.
Attachment:
CNCSideDoubleDoor.jpg
CNCSideDoubleDoor.jpg [ 247.46 KiB | Viewed 154078 times ]

The Bridge ceiling console was also coming along. In this case, the MDF is just an underlying structure that'll be getting covered by metal and upholstery.
Attachment:
CNCBridgeCeilingConsole.jpg
CNCBridgeCeilingConsole.jpg [ 322.52 KiB | Viewed 154078 times ]

Next, wall consoles and upholstery.

More assembly, now that we had plenty of MDF and metal pieces that needed to go together.

The cases for the wall consoles.
Attachment:
WallConsolesRaw.jpg
WallConsolesRaw.jpg [ 324.1 KiB | Viewed 154028 times ]

The large display wall in the vestibule. There'll be interactive consoles to the left and right, with the center being a display for a pulse rifle.
Attachment:
VestibuleConsolesRaw.jpg
VestibuleConsolesRaw.jpg [ 301.66 KiB | Viewed 154028 times ]

Meanwhile, we started to move forward on the upholstery. Here we're testing the shapes of the upholstery sections on the flight chair. This let us sit on it and see how it felt.
Attachment:
BridgeChairUpholsteryTest.jpg
BridgeChairUpholsteryTest.jpg [ 352.2 KiB | Viewed 154028 times ]

Lighting tests for the underfloor lighting in the bridge. The lighting panel is a fully controllable RGB. Due to the way the corridor goes inside a volume, we won't be able to do final lighting until it's in place. So at this point we were more focused on finding a flexible solution that we'd be confident would allow us to achieve our goals at the end.
Attachment:
BridgeUnderlightingTest.jpg
BridgeUnderlightingTest.jpg [ 284.29 KiB | Viewed 154028 times ]

Meanwhile, we'd finished priming a whole ton of the metal wall & floor pallets. In the back, you can see a box full of cables and other junk. While we were fabricating, we were also collecting boxes of old wiring, cabling, and electronics junk. We'd be using it wherever we could later in the build to achieve our weathering and high frequency detail goals.
Attachment:
PalletsPrimedAndJunk.jpg
PalletsPrimedAndJunk.jpg [ 471.43 KiB | Viewed 154028 times ]

We couldn't resist seeing what the corridor looked like if we waited until it got dark. Even with just some primed pallets and raw MDF, it was getting exciting.
Attachment:
NightPrimerTest.jpg
NightPrimerTest.jpg [ 407.84 KiB | Viewed 154028 times ]

Next, EDS and some smaller details.

The EDS internals and their associated mechanisms were coming along. The EDS was the majority of the interactive complexity in the corridor, with the rest being a keyboard and a great variety of switches / toggles / sliders / buttons / etc.

One of the EDS columns, with the sliding section moved to the side so you can (barely) see the internal button that needs to be pressed. We were really happy with how the slide mechanism turned out - it feels super smooth.

We were also starting on the electronics that'll control the EDS, and the rest of the corridor. We couldn't resist.

Underside of the EDS lid. It latches when pushed down, then automatically unlocks and springs open when they EDS levers are pulled. There'll be a monitor embedded in the middle.

Meanwhile, lots of assembly was starting on other smaller pieces.
