The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hmm. Dress cords do look good but I think need to be saved for particular appointments. Otherwise they loose their value real quick if everyone is wearing them.

I can see both sides of that. A unit which has been awarded the citation is fully authorized to wear it (the 5th and 6th Marine Regiment of the USMC comes to mind).

Damn decisions... :)

I would say Option 3 at the very least. Option 1 is unfair to the people who put a lot of effort into the outfit and supporting their cons (for example All-Con or the one in Canada that I can't remember the name of).

Though I do worry that Option 2 will end up with people having their sleeve full of stripes. It does look like you can get them in the same dark blue as on the ranks:

http://www.supertrooper.com/SvcStripes.htm

Another option maybe to do 1 red stripe per con with a gold stripe representing 5 cons (so you minimize the total number of stripes someone is wearing).

OK, OK Rex take it easy!

I can't commit to that kind of funds until at least after Christmas is done with.

Although I like the midnight blue tunic, the black does look just as sharp!

So what say we? Black with red piping yes?

The service cap should be a standard Marine white dress cap yes?

And the pants- black with a 1 inch red stripe?

Now about convention hash marks...

I was thinking more along the lines of campaign ribbons-

Atlanta Colony Campaign

Polaris Campaign (the Canadian one  )

All Con, SDCC, etc.

Everyone would be able to wear some cool customized ribbons on their uniform. I figure most of us have been to D-Con and at least one local convention. Do we really need a citation for every time we've been to D-Con? Just sayin'.

Of course we'd have to look into having these made as well- it would be more work than generic hash marks, but how cool would it be to have some ribbons/medals on your chest? :D

Yep... here we are playing soldier. Hope we're not making a mockery of this to you real military folk. :?

... no, you're not.

You'll notice I haven't been commenting much.... this is because I like the direction this is going and don't have much more to add.

How would you all feel about a red forage cap? I know a place that has them...

Heyyy Kev, you know me, full steam ahead!
I don't mind if you order after Christmas, I've just got to order my stuff now, I'm going ahead w/ a few outfits, then shutting purchasing down.

An arm full of hash marks...that's a bad thing? 8)

I like different campaign ribbons too, but really like the idea of hash marks as well.

Pics Dom?

And, where do we get:

Delta Collar Tabs-
Delta Hat Badge-

Custom Colonial Marines Shoulder Patch-

Anything else?

Relax... you're not making a mockery of anything.

Though I like the idea of "campaign ribbons"... where in the hell would something like that be made?

Regarding ribbons/medals, I know there are places who have what are known as "Commemorative Medals". I'll list a link below for U.S. Marine Corps commemoratives, but here is what is stated on the main page:

"For over 225 years Commemorative Medals have been a traditional way of honoring our veterans.
- They recognize campaigns, service, or historical events a Veteran patricipated in or supported.
- Commemoriative medals are not issued by the government and are not authorized on official military uniforms, but can be worn on civilian and organizational clothing."

(I snipped the rest)
http://www.usmedals.com/CategoryHome.as ... &ProdFam=1

then click...

http://www.usmedals.com/SearchResult.aspx?Banner=1

Now, I wouldn't have an issue with wearing several of these commemorative ribbons on a USCM dress uniform, mainly because several of them are applicable to me in the real-world.... and though I have "real" medals/ribbons from my time in the service, I would never...ever... wear them. Civilian commemoratives, on the other hand, I wouldn't take issue with.

My point here is that perhaps other branches (or other country's branches) have something similar for the civilian market?

And, also... say (for instance) I wore the "Marine Corps commemorative ribbon" on my USCM dress... would anyone here have issue with it? Or any, for that matter?

If we are wanting to do something similiar to service ribbons, how about service bars:

Hmmmm, interesting there Dom! Could be cool. I wonder how it would look w/ the Delta on it?

It would tie in nicely w/ the red piping and red stripe...

Nice find Wookie!

As far as service ribbons, it looks like we can get customized ones, don't know the minimum quanity...might be nice!

I was also thinking of just wrapping, is it embroidery thread around a piece of plastic and making my own... Might as well have one for several events- what about this:

DCons attended, one for each year, different but similar coloring-
Cons attended in USCM Gear-
Events where a minimum of 3-4 Marines in gear attended
DCon Sweeps Participation-

USCM Commendations- For Perfomance Above and Beyond the Call of Duty- (they did something really cool that benefited the Corps!)

What I have so far...

(still like the idea of a white web belt...but I'll go along...)

Nah!
All you need do is look at some other organisations - the CAP for example... I know a Cadet 2nd Lieutentant (never could get used to these cadet "officer" ranks) with more ribbons on his chest than any of my collegues who've been in Northern Ireland, The Falklands, Iraq 1 & 2...
I counted 22 ribbons. Heck, if the that isn't seen as pushing things, I think we're safe. :D

Not sure how these Commemorative Medals work.

So these can be worn by any civilian? Not a retired military person who now a civilian?

Personally I wouldn't feel right wearing (for instance) a Liberation of Kuwait ribbon even if it is... symbolic? I dunno.

Something just feels wrong about them having real meaning... and wearing them on a costume.

I would rather have them custom made- like our dropship wings for example.

Also I'm a bit of a noob on the placement of these medals. You have a ribbon that is the classic ribbon attached to the circular medal. And then there is the bar that has the coloured stripes which denote what the commendation means.

Like I said, I'm really green about this. So would the bars go on a duty uniform tunic, and the medals go on a dress/parade uniform tunic?

Not sure how it works in the US but for the RAF we have the bars (called ribbons) attached to parade uniform for normal formal parade wear.
For certain occasions medals (ie gong on ribbon) are ordered.

Neither ribbons nor medals are worn in working uniform.

Our comemorative "medals" are not really medals but collectors peices and not worn on uniform at all.

Does this include the Queen's Golden Jubilee? We wear it...

In Canada, very much like the UK, ribbons can be worn on any dress or service uniforms. Medals are reserved for full dress uniforms and worn only on special occasions.

Some referance material:

Canadian standars on wearing medals
Who can wear medals?
Unlawful use of military uniforms or certificates
USMC Medals and Decorations, Manner of Wearing

This idea is brilliant.

I'm retarded for not thinking about it... we wear these commendations on our Police Department uniforms. The flag one, for instance, is standard. There are others (Meritorious Unit, Lifesaving, etc...) but obviously those need to be earned.

What a great idea!

That one is considered an official medal and yes we wear it too.

When I talk about commemorative medals I'm thinking of many that are produced by civilian companies as collectors items in the same way as commemorative coins for example.

UK law allows the wearing of your next of kin's medals. They are worn on the right breast instead of the left however and are not worn in uniform.

Looking at the design options, created by the sarge,
this idea flashed through my mind...

What about an H.Solo type stripe on the pants?

It has a future military/ sci-fi appearence.
Would further distinguish it from the real dress blues while achiving the same look.
Are readily available.
Just find some proper black/ blue pants and sew it on.

Just a thought...
