The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

We were upstairs having our little geeky shindig, but someone decided the bar was closing at 2300, so we got shunted downstairs.

Downstairs there was some kind of cyalume-tastic Braehead staff party going down, resplendent with beats that would make your granny cringe, and packed full of inebriated 'norms'. Needless to say, a few of the folk from upstairs were more than a little upset at being dumped into that crowd, even if the drink was very cheap.

*shrugs*

Aye, up until 10:15pm, I was under the impression that the party was 7:30pm > 1am.

It was only when a crewmember told me "Last orders are at 10:30, mate" and I told him to go find Jason to confirm this that it came out.
I was raging, since party tickets were £10 each - And to my mind, that's over double what you should be paying for a 5.5 hour party anyway, with no food, expensive drinks... And while I guess you could say that the DJ needed to be paid, it transpired that "This year, there's no budget for the party so you'll need to do it for free, but there'll be a bigger budget for next year's party".

So the £10 ticket fees were going purely to Braehead and to Showmasters.

It's a damn good job that the crewmember given the last-second job of "running the party" decided "Sod it, I ain't charging on the door if I'm doing it alone. Free entry for all".
If he hadn't, there'd have been a bloodbath.

As it is, the folk who had bought their tickets in advance were raging, and demanding refunds.

One girl got in a big fight with Jason after asking for HALf a refund, being given a full refund, then ( Slightly tipsilly, but so was he ) complaining that the DJ for the Braehead staff party that was going on downstairs was rubbish, and could Jason have a word to get some rock played please? He felt she was wanting to have her cake and eat it, and pointed out that the beer downstairs was only a pound, and the party much bigger so she should just try to make the best of it - After all, the drinks upstairs were really expensive.

I'd been saying from the start that another venue might be better, as the Braehead bar is in the middle of a mall corridor, and as such the dancefloor IS a slippy, hard mall corridor, on top of the pricey drinks issue...

Then the folk who had worn costumes to the party - Upstairs? Private room? Fine.
But imagine wearing a skimpy wee Trek costume... Or even USCM armour to a small private party then being ousted into a big public one, full of non-geeks and non-costumers.
Lots of dirty looks, mockerry and humiliation felt there, it seems.

What there WAS of the party, folk loved.

I overcame some hard drive problems and missing CDs with the wonders of Youtube and an iPhone, so we got Star Trekkin' after all, and what folk did show up told me they had a great time while it lasted.

Jason's said he's not having a party next year, and if I want to, I can do it myself.

So long as he gives me OFFICIAL status, I'm well up for it.
As to my mind, that's a big part of what a show could and should be, if it's to be more than a glorified dealers' room.
The Cosplay aspect is the other big thing aside from guests, and that WAS bigger and better this year.
It's just down to whether Jason listens to sense, and allows those of us willing and wanting to put the work in ( for his show! ) to make it as big a show as the Scottish punters deserve.

I dont know if its make a difference one way or the other, but a thread on the Showmasters forum (as soon as Glasgow '10 appears) acting as a petition for a party with official status / independant organisation could be a thought.

Aside from that a few flyers distributed from the organisers table / prop table / cosplay table advertising the party might drum up some more attention; I didnt hear any mention of the party other than the Masquerade judging downtime. So if you never went onto the website or forum and never attended the Masquerade, you wouldnt have known there was a party on!
