The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Ten years is a long time, but in the prop world it is an eternity and that is how long I have been accumulating PR parts.

I started with a Relics PR which frankly is an MDF POS but it got me a real SPAS cage and grip and the cage is still with me.
The pump grip went when I lost some stuff to customs but it the reshuffle they let me keep the Relics stuff and I subbed the badly cut pump for a good one, so that was a plus. Also have two Golden Armour fibreglass "castings" of the pumps but they need a LOT of work....

For shrouds I have a set of SD Studios original plastic ones, a set of GEM shrouds which I am pretty sure are a resin re-cast of the SD shrouds, but in themselves are somewhat sturdier and a set of thin but saveable GWII vacform plastic shrouds.

Barrel vents I can choose between 10 hole and 8 hole and I have SD, GEM, GWII and I think DeanO ones. Pretty much the same deal with stocks, I have four. I do lean towards the DeanO ten hole/square with the integral barrel loop, but I have three or four SD Barrel loops and barrels as well.

Grenade launcher blocks are all SD, again four and I do like their look, but the thought did cross my mind to have one re-machined to more closely resemble a hero one.

Plenty of SD stock locks, shroud supports and metal parts, mag tabs, plus 5 mag bases and two 30 round (genuine) Thompson mags and an SD modified Mag with battery switch and gubbins.

Four SD hand grips plus a Deck 36 grip cast in black resin.

Hyperdyne rounds counter and sound board plus an SD rounds counter.

A machined steel Thompson upper reciever that I can weld a GL support block to (have to get an appropriate piece machined up). I also have a GEM resin upper and lower reciever that has working switches and trigger, plus a Matsuo resin Thomson bolt kickin' around somewhere. Also from GEM I have a reasonable multipart resin 870 to stuff in a GL.

What I am really after is advice on how to approach a PR build with such diverse source material. I really want to avoid importing any more stuff from outside Australia as I am pretty sure I am now on a customs watch list after the SPAS debacle, but I feel I won't have to to build one PR as I have enough bits combined with some fabrication to get there. Doing a second one would take more work but may come along.

I would like to attempt a movable grenade launcher and I know that I have drawings to make a mechanism that I think PulseRiflefan posted years ago to fabricate one but looking at Tommins site I believe he has a tutorial to build one as well?

The thing that makes me smile about attempting such a Pulse Rifle is that by employing parts from such a diverse range of suppliers it has some of the sould of the board in it, and I would like that.

Pictures to follow and all advice gratefully recieved.

Cheers

Tony

The stash!

Barrel vents from the top: GWII, SD, SD, GEM
Image

Another view
Image

Test assembled grenade launcher with uncut SPAS pump, DeanO 10 hole barrel vent, SD GL block and barrel and Relics SPAS cage.
Image

Front view of the DeanO barrel vent, perhaps one of the best "hero" barrel vents available at the time.
Image

Crap job of loading port cut, as it came from Relics. NOT my work! Saveable with some filing and dressing up.
Image

Machined steel replica Thompson upper reciever.
Image

Another angle.
Image

The Relics POS with the test assembled GL. There is hours of work in cleaning up the MDF shrouds, fabricating a dummy counter window and filling and repainting but it just isn't worth it in my opinion.
Image

Another angle on the Relics. It didn't look anywhere near this good when I started...:(
Image

Resin working parts Thompson from GEM, but I believe Wolvster was the maker.
Image

You can make all this work with the right inside parts....;)
Image

Three mags, the SD battery compartment conversion and two genuine 30 round mags.
Image

Stocks! And I totally have lost track of which is which but I am pretty sure there is SD, DeanO, GEM and GWII ones in there.
Image

Grips, three SD, a black resin Deck 36 and a resin cast part of one later in these pictures.
Image

Mag bases by five....gotta have spare mags!
Image

Two Golden Armour fibreglass SPAS pump grips, a resin 879 from GEM/Wolvster and a first generation GEM grip frame trigger area.
Image

Hardware mostly from SD but the black resin are Deck 36 internal Thomson parts. The black resin Thompson bolt at the back is from Matsuo.
Image

As above. Gotta love the quality of the SD machine work!:)
Image

SD ABS shrouds. State of the art for so long...
Image

GWII vac-form styrene shrouds. Very thin but probably usable with some work. They look good when built up from memory.
Image

GEM resin shrouds. Let's just say that the similarities to SD shrouds are notable.
Image

I actually can't remember which resin PR this is but it is one big, heavy, warped and miscast lump. The snaller parts like barrel vent and stock are more cartoons than reality.
Image

Big crack to fix and would benefit from a few weeks of dremel work to lighten it up, but might make a good candidate for some spare metal work and do up as a wall hanger?
Image

There are undoubtably some other bits lurking in the stash but that is what I have to work with. The loss of three new SPAS cages to a Customs bust a few years back stopped all of them being buildable, but maybe the challenge is to rise above that?

Any comments welcome.

Cheers

Tony

Wow

That is an awesome collection. You should build one ASAP before you outfigure yourself. I have done this with all my Blade Runner blasters - keep piling parts and never getting around to actually building one.

I feel dizzy.

I think I have information overload!

Tony in all these years I think this is the first time I've seen all of your PR parts laid out like that! :D

I really don't know where to begin other than I prefer the 10 hole myself. 8)

Dude you need to hire a cleaner! ;)

I'm a bit surprised that beastie isn't cast in black resin.

Nice collection!

My suggestions:

I would add the missing "bridge" on the rear of the stock, and make sure you use

the correct barrel diameter (marui or real steel barrel)

And finally, put at least one together!

Noble, the bridge was definitely on my list of things to fabricate and add. Altering the barrel diameter and adding the dummy blank firing attachment was a consideration but will have to be tied in to altering the loop diameter. As I need a dummy 870 barrel I was going to see a machine shop about running them both up.

And Kevin, the DeanO 10 hole was allways #1 hit for the "best" PR...:D

Bishop, what can I say....call me and be here!

Assimilate, I look forward to seeing what you do with it. I am pretty sure I will try to build it but I will be adding metal barrels, vents, grenade launcher block and stock to tart it up.

Cheers

Tony

The stock second from the right is the GWII version. I know because I made 2 or 3 rifles using his locking bolt design.

That last PR with the half broken Spas section is the infamous FRONTIER MODELS version!
Same as the one I owned! I still have nightmares about it. ;)

Thanks for sharing the pics mate, brings back memories (as well as some envy)! :)

Hi Tony. It's great to see that you are getting back into your PR inventory. :D As for the tutorial, I remember creating one called "The $16.00 Home Depot G.L. project:" Did a search here first because I do remember listing it but, it must have fallen off the far end since so much time has passed. Not a problem, you can still call up most of the info here. ===> http://www.m41a.com/a_2005/articles/index8.htm

Keep in mind, I was modifying a resin handguard when I was doing this. They have much thicker structural walls than the real steel part. I would imagine that the basic idea would still work but, you will have to work up your own width dimensions. This shouldn't be too difficult to stack layers and such.

If you can use an exact template of what I made, here it is:

Image

Just click on the image for a super hi-res / print version.

Wasn't sure how to prep this pic to print to scale so the ruler is in the scan to help on the print end.

I could not agree more. In fact, most of the personal value of my own six-year WIP is based on that very same idea. Just knowing that mine is made up of components offered by fellow enthusiast from all over makes it, in itself, very dear to me as a project.

If I think of anything else to add, I'll be sure to do so. However, I am quite confident that I will continue to be learning quite a few things from you. :)

yeah the old frontier models one is similar to the old comet miniatures one or maybe just an older version. i believe both frontier and comet offer the same kit now which i have seen and is a very nice kit its just lacks weight to it

I made and use The Comet Miniatures one, it was awful. :(

I was going to give up, but took out a belt sander and got rough on it!!

It is now ...............usable! :?

Great to see all you PR's Tony, and you on the board for that matter! :D

Seeing them all like that and all the different makes, it's just like a history lesson!

I tried test fitting my resin Thompson to the GEM resin shrouds yesterday. They went quite well but need a fair amount of smoothing inside and some minor trimming to make the fit snug. I could not try the SD shrouds as they are not cut inside to clear the Thompson.
Is there any guide available for trimming or should I just trim and fit gradually using the GEM cutouts as a guide?

Interestingly enough, both shrouds clear the SPAS cage OK, again a small amount of filing may be needed, but even though both have cutouts for the barrel vents neither will clear any of the vents I have without some additional cutting. Due to the different contours in crosssection of the four vent types I have I will need to commit to a certain type before cutting I guess.

Anyone had much experience in cutting raw shrouds, either GEM or SD?

Cheers

Tony
