The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

To find one for $200 or less would indeed be awesome.

What would be more awesome would be if you could have a read of the board rules (here) and the PX rules (here) and only post 'want to buy' threads in the PX section.

Thanks,

Harry

Sure you could find one. But it would be a great embarrassment to the entire fandom.

I doubt you will find a ready to wear (or even kit form) Alien costume anywhere for under $200 sadly. The time and effort involved in producing them simply doesn't lend itself to low sale value like that. You could probably make your own for under $200 but I imagine (using my own skills as a comparison) that it would not look very screen accurate. That said, nobody would think it was embarrassing if you did go that route and all efforts are always applauded.

Cheers

Darren

I'd like to buy Harry's level of restraint for $200.

You're not going to find an alien coustume for under $200 bud. The materials alone cost a lot more than that. What I would do if I were you is start yourself a savings fund and put away your allowance and or salary steadily until you've got yourself about $1000. I don't have an alien coustume myself, but I'm going to guess this would be about the minimoum.

It kinda depends. My first Alien costume was made from stout wire and black trash bags ...

But, if you want anything that approaches "realism" or screen-accuracy, $1000 is a decent guess at a minimum spend. This is a kit of near-SA parts. You could sculpt your own, but the cost of the materials for mould making etc would be a grand easy.

My bug suit was cardboard and latex. It cost a lot less than $200 to make. BUT, it would cost more than $200 to buy.

If you really want a bug suit for under $200, grab up a mess of cardboard, some vacuum cleaner hoses, a human skull model kit, some wire, gardening gloves, windsurf booties, a bucket of latex, some paint and a unitard.

Those are the basic materials, and they cost less than $200. Turning it into an Alien will take a lot of work, but it can be done.

And please don't ask me for a tutorial on how to do it, the tutorial will cost you more than $200.

:)

Careful there. In most circumstances, asking Spat for pictures of anything only ends in horror.

His Alien costume isn't that bad! ;) Not SA, and oh so brown ( :( ), but it's a nice piece of work. It has seen quite alot of "action"! ;)

I was thinking of rebuilding the bin bag Alien for a lark (and incidentally making a photo tutorial), but currently I'm working 55+ hours a week so that is on the back burner for a long time - in the queue between the low-cost PR soundboard idea and the "working" MT circuit. They'll be finished sometime in the year 2842 at this rate!

Well, let's not forget the Aliens in the first two movies were both painted brown!
Even if brown wasn't the 'screen perceived' colour.

Hmm, I might repaint Alan in Brown Bess....

On topic, one could build a bug suit for $200 ish but it'd have to be from scratch using cheap materials, you need lotsa skills to make up for the low $ projects.

Funnily enough, I was aware of that. ;) It doesn't prevent them looking like giant turds.

Besides, most fan built Aliens seem to overestimate the extent of the browness of the screen-used suits by about 1000%. But, alas, that is one of my "pet hates", if you can excuse the pun.

Agreed. As you know G, Giger himself reffered to the Alien Res bugs as turds.

That's where the problem lies. The brown itself I don't mind in the case of Alien 3 which I think after the first Alien suit was the most realistic looking and looked awesome in those brownish Giger hues.

There's even a new Hollywood Collectibles bust coming out in 'screen used' colours but when I saw it in person I thought it looked too brown -- even though the paint job is apparently the most accurate on a replica to date! However, in these photo's it looks as though they've toned it down and looks mightily impressive:

Thnx for the suggestions I think based on what you've all said I'm gonna build my own. Probably gonna use wire and dark clothes or maybe just the clothes.

It really depends on how accurate YOU need it to be. Rubies I believe made Aliens costumes around the time of the first AvP film. You may be able to find one on ebay for $200 or so, but again, the quality level won't be that high.

I've got a foam rubber latex Alien head and full-length tail with whipping action (when swung around by the wearer ;)) that I could probably let go for about $200, but you'd still have to piece together the rest yourself. These are probably the two hardest pieces to build from scratch.

I was thinking about doing a static Alien display from some costume parts I had acquired a couple years back, but I will honestly never get around to building it anytime soon. I'll take some photos and post them if you're interested.

I thought this guy had a pretty ingenious idea:

http://www.youtube.com/user/r1a2s3

He carves his costumes out of foam you can find at most arts and crafts stores, but I guess you could use bedding foam.

This would probably be the cheapest way to make it look good. I'm making mine like this.

Wait, I found something:

[Link removed my moderators as per board rules]

It's not complete and the heads not in the best shape, but it fits the budget. :)

Brent I've removed the eBay link you posted as it's against board rules to post links to live auctions; this is for the good of members as I'm sure you'd be disappointed if someone here saw your link and snapped it up before you had a chance.

Costuming, like Airsoft, playing golf, drinking fine wine or collecting sports cars is something that can get VERY expensive
in a short time, depending on how good you want your items to be. Many things (using Spat's pizza box Alien as an example)
can be built from scratch just with creativity and experimentation. People have made Pulse rifles out of cardboard or printed
paper, Marine body armor out of sporting equipment, etc.

When you're new to doing it, the desire is to want everything NOW! But finances (and reason) sometimes win out. :)

Start small, a dropship pilot flight suit or set of BDUs with patches, and after a year if you're still interested, save money
to invest in what you really want, be it armor or a bug suit.

There's no hurry. We're not going anywhere soon. Except for maybe the next fan convention. :)
