The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Funnily enough, Tony, a while back I tried 'opening up' the 'blacks' from the blue ray edtion of the film on my Mac,
but sure enough there was no hidden detail to be found. Based on the contrast ratios, it's most likely the film was
under exposed during filming as opposed to just being transfered incorrectly. Which is a damn shame, because
there are some nice sequences in that film.

The lameness of that movie for me lies in it's poor script as opposed to direction (same for AVP1).

Back to the game – yeah will be over the moon if Colonial Marines does emerge but I'm looking forward to this version, too,
the videos look really promising and the Predator trophy kills look amazing. Still, the Avatar game in 3D is what I'm looking
forward to most, at least until CM comes out.

I just bought aliens vs predator 2 gold edition off ebay. Can't wait to try it out! Aliens vs predator 1 was one of my favorite PC games. They did such a good job with the atmosphere, creepy music, alien screeches etc. I can't believe I never got around to playing the sequel.

From what others have said, it takes place several decades after Aliens so the equipment is more "advanced." Actually ambidextrous (interchangeable) counters for the PR's makes sense.

I *hear* they used the same sound sources as the movie, so they should be the same.
I also *heard* they're making damn sure they have all each and every Alien sound correct.....

I'm used to it now, but I never liked the counters where they were, TBH.
Most people are Right-Handed so it'd make sense to have counters on the left side of the weapon. On the right side, you have to take it out of the shoulder, turn it over and look down to check yoru ammo, which is awkward in combat.

But it is a movie and clearly has been done that way so the audience can be wowed.

The official trailer is now up. Looking forward to playing in Marine mode on LV-426.
There's a nice shot of a marine getting despatched by a bug where the POV is from the Aliens mouth.
Did that on my camcorder once and it worked a treat - kind of an obvious shot in my mind and I always wondered why it was never tried in one of the later movies. Anyhow, I thought it looks promising here. Let us hope it plays as good as it looks:

All I saw there was poor animations, clipping issues, lack of anti-aliasing, low polygon models and particle effects that looked like they were pulled from the original AvP... *sigh*

Maybe when it's in the bargain bucket.

Hey, I play games to escape... If the visual aspects aren't up to scratch, I can't get immersed, and if I can't get immersed I can't escape... In some games it's just not an issue, but in something this close to my heart and especially something first-person, I can't let it lie.

I've very little doubt that it'll be an excellent game; just not as excellent as I'd like it to be from the look of it.

There's not much in life I'm overly picky about but when it comes to gaming, which has been my primary hobby all the way through my life so far since I was about six, I can't help but demand the utmost return for my leisure spending. Plus I'm getting old and grumpy, so gerrofmylawn! ;)

So what you're saying is that you don't have a very good imagination? ;)

Best Alien game so far IMO was Alien Trilogy on the PS1. And that was before they worked out how to get decent graphics out of the PS1.

I'll be really old and grumpy, and say that I believe many developers concentrate way too much on visuals meaning that the game-play suffers. But, I've said similar things since AGA-only Amiga games came out ... ;)

Having said that, I'm a big fan of Thief I and II.
Sheeeeeeee-ite graphics by today's standards, but the gameplay is so involving that you just get absorbed into it. Having 300+ fan missions to continue with afterward helps.

I once spent a whole weekend at work (no PC at home) playing Thief for almost 3 days straight, it was that involving.

Well, yes... But then I'm paying for someone else's imagination to do the work for me aren't I?

Totally agree on the Alien Trilogy point, I still play that game to this day, very well done. Back in it's day it was immersive, because nobody had seen any better, and we probably did all fill in the blanks with out imaginations more effectively. Strangely games like Space Hulk, Flashback or System Shock 2, even with all the updated texture, model and sound packs, look and sound like proverbial train-wrecks by modern standards but still suck me in and scare the willies out of me.

Third part, again totally in agreement, but then apparently that's what happens when an art form goes mainstream. Pretty pictures = more units sold = more pretty pictures; gameplay just doesn't come into it because it's not quantifiable and can't be twisted to make money.

Voxels for the win, and still some of the best co-op human versus massed AI bad guys missions I've ever played.

I'd really like it if you could point out where you saw 'clipping issues and low polygon models'. I'm sorry but I really hate when people try to comment on games using technical terms they don't even understand. Many console titles have little to no Anti-aliasing, that's mostly a PC gaming appeal. I think the maximum for any single game was 4x AA on a PS3 game, where PC titles are going into the 16x MSAA category. It dosen't say what platform the footage is from, and if you think it looks anything like the origional AvP your either insane, or just hating on the game for the sake of hating on it.

Spike; By all means offer technical correction if you definitely know better but I'd prefer not to see such an aggressive tone in your posts. Every member here deserves the right to be spoken to with respect.

4 player co-op mode :D

Hey, as a videogame artist, it's my job to make sure the games I work on are as pretty as possible (as much as time and hardware allows). It's the designer's job to make sure stuff plays well
