The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I've always found it funny that you guys call textile patches "badges", whereas we refer to badges as a metal symbolic shield of authority. When did we split this meaning?

There seems to have been a split when the word 'Patch' took on a special meaning in certain groups.

In the Biker world, you only wear a Patch if you're a member of a club (MC, MCC, Brotherhood, FrontPatch, SidePatch, PartyPatch). Otherwise it's referred to as a 'Sew On Badge'. Oddly enough, no-one actually calls them Patches - They're "Colours". :?

I've heard this being used by some other groups in society.
Some military groups call them Patches, but refer to the obtaining of them as being 'Badged'!!

English is just a plain weird language!!

A little hint: The patches and that object aren't in the same relative scale. (Unless the patches are 40ft across ....)

When the Boy Scouts started having "merit badges"?

I have several of Patches 'n Pins... patches ( ) and think they are outstanding considering they are embroidered- however I wish they would make a correct Victory By Wings patch. The one they sell is the standard commercially available patch. The correct patch has a black border, as well as the individual stars having black borders. The screen accurate patch is larger as well.

I think it's just another case where someone makes a patch slightly wrong, someone else copies it and changes it slightly... gradually the 'wrong' version becomes accepted as 'correct' because nobody has bothered to check what the originals looked like. How else do you explain the blue delta patches?

I must admit I cringe whenever I see those 'pale border' VBWs, because correct ones have been made, years ago. (I should know, I made them!)

But at least they have the delta correct. ;)

Its funny, I've always called them badges because that's what we call them in the Scouts... I didn't know there were that many merit badges

Nah. That's the 40-Year-Old-Virgin when he was 39.
