Say... You guys serious about that Mr. LV-426 ribbon?

We could put together a friendly competition. 8)

I know it's sounds whacked... Like I said- the body is complex.

When it comes to eating schedules, sleep, and the time of day of your workout, your body will do best when it has a set routine that you follow every day. Your body will be working at optimum levels if you get the same amount of sleep at the same time every day, you eat at regular intervals at the same times each day, and personally I have found that working out at the same time of day helps too.

However when it comes to your workout itself, if you do the same workouts, the same exercises, the same way every time, your body will not improve. It becomes accustom to the routine and will not grow even if you are adding more weight to your exercises (you simply won't be able to lift any heavier weights). Bodybuilders call this a plateau.

So to keep your body "guessing" you have to change up your workout routine every now and again. Sometimes even changing gyms can help.

I know it seems like a total contradition on paper... It's hard to describe.

I've worked out that I need to lift slightly more weight doing the bicep curls, compared with the tricep ones, to get the same amount of workout.

Bicep curls this week are now being done with 4 x 0.5kg weights on one bar (2 at each end).

The tricep exercise is done with just one 0.5kg weight at each end.

Doing them like that, I feel I require the same amount of 'effort' to do the exercises. :)

I might take the weights over to my sister's tomorrow, so I can get a 'Before' pic, in a pose similar to Kevin's here:

Image

with me holding a heavy dumbell.

I've found out that I can just about hold one in that position with 6 x 1.25kg weights on it. (7.5kg = about 15lbs)

I think it'll be interesting to see how I get on with that amount of weight at Christmas. :)

I forgot to add the weight of the bar itself, so it's more like 17lbs.

Here's my 'Before' pic:

Image

Bearing in mind that I had to help lift the weight to that position with my right hand, then get my sister to take the pic before it dropped down. :D

I gave the bar to my nephew (6'4" and built much better than me) and he held it like it weighed nothing, the git.

Here he is, doing a much more 'provocative' version of that pose:

Weight up this week:

Bicep curls are now being done with 3.5kg weight on one bar, making a total of 4.75kg including the bar.

The tricep exercise is done with 1kg (2x0.5kg) at one end and 0.5kg at the other end of the bar, making a total of 2.75kg.

I now have to concentrate to lift the weights smoothly for the last few repetitions, with a feeling like I've worked myself quite a bit at the end. :)

so since my last post i have'nt lost any more weight stil at 186-87 ,but that does'nt bother me , i am still working out 2 days on 1 off , 3 1/2 miles ,100 pushups ,and 150 crunches ,, i feel awesome , and even though the scale doesn't say so i know i look better , maybe i have found my natural body weight , love handles are getting smaller chest and arms a little bigger , i am just shifting . the goal of 175 maybe wasn't realistic , especially since one of my friends told me i looked to thin , but anyway i feel great and i am sticking with it .. there is a competion "feelin fine in 09 " through my wifes work , its a 4 month program ,and we are three months into it ,and i have the most workout hours of anyone else .. on a side note my wife has lost 40 lbs ,and she looks incredible . she is only 15 lbs away from where she was when she got pregnant with my first born ..

So, been doing the weights for two months now (apart from two weeks when the bad chest cold stopped me).

Noticed tonight that my forearm muscles are a little bigger/fuller, with a definite 'roundness' to them, rather than the fish fillet look originally. :D

Still can barely manage to lift a bale of hay, but I'm getting there slowly. 8)

Oh this is really cool. I'm really glad you guys actually have fitness in mind with this... but then again you should anyways!

Since the USCM is modelled off the USMC, anyone think about running a Marine Physical Fitness Test?

We run them twice a year. And now to go a bit with the CrossFit thing, we also have a Combat Fitness Test (CFT) which is once a year and involves some weird things wearing boots and MARPAT trousers ("Boots and Utes")

Sadly I'm out of shape for where I need to be and the Corps is going to fix that with some BCP (Body Composition Program) assignment which mainly keeps me from getting promoted. Some rough times and bad choices put me on the rise in weight. But I feel like re-enlisting, getting my Sergeant's stripes, AND going to Marine Security Guard (Embassy Duty) which require me to get out there and PT more.

A bad thing about living in the Air Wing in the Marines is that our job takes 10-12 hours+ and leaves us no PT time, but naturally in the Corps Eyes you will get punished for being out of shape, while all the staff weenies and Grunts are given time to PT or at least its on their schedule, formalized PT in the air wing is normally met with failure, we just don't have time for it. But we all need it!

If anyone wants, I can post up the Marine height/weight and PFT standards for you to try and scale yourself against the real deal.

I think I may participate in this though just to track my progress.. Essentially I'm 218 and 22% Body fat, I need to be 202 and 18% (The minimum) My aim is to get back to my previous level of 192 and then push down to my Boot Graduate in 180 and build muscle from there. I'm built big, that isn't ever going to change, I doubt unless I get extreme I can get down to 170, but I know I can turn this fat into leanness or muscle. I've done this before, in about a year I went from 254lbs to 216 to ship to MCRD San Diego, and left there at I think 180, our scale in my platoon was busted so one time it showed me at 154 which was nowhere near right, the next week I was 178... Will post more later, I have to go to work!

Check this out. This work out i seemed really dumb when i first saw it but it will knock out your core fast and it only takes 6mins and a couch. Im pretty much on the tall slim side just wanted something to tone my core real well. Did it 2 times a day and after 2 weeks, huge difference. Give it a try..... :delta:

Well after the weekend in KY and speaking with ADC I'm trying a new tactic.
After the exercise regime not really doing it for me (I saw little difference after a long while) I'm changing up my diet....drastically.

I'm checking out the no carb way of things.
No potatoes, bread, pasta or white rice.
I've been at it 11 days so far and I'm seeing the difference.
The weight is still there but I feel lighter, more motivated and less heavy after a meal...not sure if its just me thinking I feel better.....but I like it :)

Now this is an 8 week experiment so after the 8 weeks I'll see how it all looks.
The great thing about this is I'm not finding it difficult to stick to......I'm not craving anything I've cut out.
Plus the extra work around the house is upping the exercise I'm getting.

I'm also mixing up protein shakes mid morning and mid afternoon to speed up the metabolism.
6 1/2 weeks to go.....lets see how it goes.

if we cut you off at the knees :D
anyway i have been worjking alot in the back yard , built 180 lineal feet of fence , i say built because i didn't buy pre made panels i bought material ,and built it all my self , one saturday the 16th i dug in 25 4x4 fence posts ,and then throughout the week i built the fence , the fence posts cashed my arms for about three days ,and building the fence did in my legs for another three ,so i skipped the workout routine for a week or so ,but i got back on the horse this week . i started at 530 in the morning because the boys have baseball practice 4 frickin nights a week ,and i have to get dinner ready ,and laundry ,and yada yada ,any way so its easier for me to do it first thing . still hovering around 185 ,but i look and feel great .. if i got to 180 i would be extremly happy ,but its not a huge goal . now its just stay sexy :D :D

'Bout time I rolled around here again.

First of all, I'd like to give a big Oorah to those that are in this thread and are keeping with it. Nice job! Don't stop now, dragon con will be right around the corner.

I've made a lot of progress since this thread was started. I owe a lot of it to Raider Company (Marine Corps ROTC) at Virginia Tech, but I also owe it to those in this thread. Now, that being said, i'm not there yet. But seeing some progress can't hurt, right?

Before:
Feb 10, 2008
Image
Image

Army PFT (June 3, 2008)

Pushup: 47
Situps: 57
2-Mile Run: 16:06

Just prior to switching to Marine ROTC from Navy I took a PFT. My results were as follows:
PFT(January ??, 2009)
222
Run: 22/23 minutesish.
Pullups: 13
Situps: 80ish?

After:
May 31, 2009
Image
Image
Image
Granted, I have not gained that much muscle. But for now, i'm focusing on fitness overall, not so much looks. As you can see below, my PFT score has improved dramatically:

PFT (May 5, 2009)
272
3 Mile Run: 20:56
Pullups: 18
Situps: 102

Gi-rene, I'll take you up on the PFT's/CFT's. Although it would be a little bit more difficult for me to do a CFT at the moment as I don't have a course or my Altamas with me.
My last CFT score:

CFT (May 1, 2009)
Pass
Movement to contact: 3:03
Ammo Can Lifts: 65
Movement Under Fire: 3:26

The midshipmen and I in my fireteam will be passing around PT plans every week starting next week to mix it up some. I will post these here.

Semper Fi,

Collin "Ripper714"

Okay lets get some.

The SemperFit on base has started a summer fitness program the fatbodies have all been assigned to it on MOndays so we fulfill the need for nutrition classes and stuff (A part of being on BCP). Today we did body fat testing. Much to my surprise I weigh 210.5 pounds!!! I'm only 8 pounds over my weight now!

My body fat is at a 19.6% down from the 22% I was a month ago. So my first goal is to get down to 202 which will put me underneath 18%. The ideal is anywhere between there and 5% and 178.1 pounds. So my goal of 180 is very realistic and very attainable.

So this is getting interesting, I may get off the fat body program before I'm officially signed to it! Great news indeed!

Part of my workout will be strength and endurance training, I want to be prepared for Corporal's Course. I want to go before I pick up Sergeant which can happen in the next 2-3 months.

My last PFT in March was:

Pullups: 6 (NEEDS MUCH IMPROVEMENT, most I ever did was 12)
Crunches: 100
3 mile Run: 23:20

I'm like a low 200's. My goal is to get a first class which is only about 5 pullups more out of my reach and a faster run time is always good!

Today I did a 1 mile fartlek (The testing wait took most of my PT time today), 2 sets of pullups, and 2 sets of 20 situps. A light day. Wednesday is my next official workout day but I'll be trying to run tomorrow.

Pullups are definitely money for the PFT. Have you tried the Armstrong pullup plan?
http://www.4mcd.usmc.mil/AOP/OSOHyattsville/Armstrong%20Pullup%20Program.htm

Also, pyramids definitely work well.

For example:
1 pullup
20 pushups
20 squats
10 dips

2 pullups
20 pushups
20 squats
10 dips

Do this until pullup failure. Quick easy workout.

Get some devildog,

Yeah the Armstrong plan was what I was first handed when I got to the Fleet and they found out my pullups stunk.

Pyramids are great, thats how I got to my 12 back in 'kuni. I was running the 8-9 miles around the seawall every weeknight and pulling off three sets of pyramids every workday with another Marine.

Then I found out some real heavy crap was happening at home and stress came crashing down all my motivation. Even with that still occurring I'm living for one person right now... me sounds selfish, but there are just some things I need to let go so I can finally make healthy and wise choices for myself and my well-being.
