The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I would like to know if the shrouds are made by:

pressed alumunium sheet
or
die cast aluminum
or
cnc'd aluminum

Can someone answer that?

I can tell you that their production rifle shrouds are NOT cnc'ed. The machine time required for a single set of shrouds would be way
more than the cost of the completed rifle.

As one board member sadly found out.

If I was guessing (which I am...) I'd guess that it will be die stamped from AL sheet.
Not unlike how they used to do things like car fenders. If you have the dies made up, and you
have acccess to the hydraulic stamping machinery, you could crank out metal shrouds at a pretty
fast pace.

That's not to say they couldn't be die cast as well, but it just seems to me like stamping would be the way to go.

But this is all conjecture with no basis in fact.

In those pics it looks like the Thompson receiver is part of the shroud! I hope that is just a prototype. Or maybe that would be cool as there would be more metal on this.

I wonder if the Thompson bolt racks as well - or is it just a back and forth thing.

I've been studying the photos of it and it looks like it can be taken down just like a lot of others out there. (as Matt has already clarified) ...this is assuming that those are real screws and not some special set of rivots. It would be worth looking into, I suppose.

Another thing that I noticed from the pics is that the Tommy looks like it has a moving bolt. This is a nice feature. :D

No, from Propstore.

Re the shrouds I don't think it's possible for the whole thing to be stamped from a whole sheet. The original shrouds were made from a flat sheet, cut & folded, with aluminium strip welded in certain places. I've no idea how these ones will be produced, but I think they're going to be very cool!

Would be nice if someone could answer my question.

I'm only interested in getting one if the shrouds are done correctly.

Sorry Mr. Noble but I can't answer that question with 100% accuracy because I myself don't know, All I know is that the factory have been given samples and instructions to create the shrouds as provided/shown, in metal.

How they will do it has not been disclosed yet.

Now this is 100% conjecture on my part so don't take it as law but there is a chance that the shroud halves will have a separation between the mag well and the upper shroud half, disguised by the curve of the side rail.
I know from experiewnce that doing it this way will decrease the tooling cost as opposed to making it all out of one huge die.

I will say that there is a valid reason for ANY shortcut or perceived innacuracy in the design and production, and that is to keep the price where it is. Some facets of the design if followed to the line and letter could double the cost of the prop.

The HCG PR WILL be a very accurate depiction of the Pulse Rifle... it will look as it appears in the pre release images and posess the features listed.

Where do Play get the RRP of £999 from though?

I've asked them anyway under the 'Seen a mistake on this page? Tell us about it!' at the bottom of the item.
I Pointed out the Prop Store/HCG correct RRP to them.
Don't suppose it will make any difference, but I just can't see how they can put up a price like that, and then make it look like you're getting some sort of bargain by knocking £100 off.

On a positive note, I really wish I could afford one, they look excellent.

Hi Guys,

Okay to clear up a few questions;

Yes, the Propstore are definitely selling it.

The shrouds will be in 2 pieces & screwed together not riveted

The shrouds will not be sold separately

The bolt does pull back, on a spring so that it closes again (very observant Tom!)

Think that covers most questions!

Mark

again a post from hcg about the shrouds

Hi Gary,
No sir. You didn't. I've just been watching several threads regarding the new PR. There's been a lot of quotes getting thrown back and forth. No biggie. Just glad to see that there is a great 'buzz' going on over this particular prop.
BTW, I've sent a brief response back to your email from the other day. Hope all has been going well with you these days.
VBR,

VBR,

Thanks, Tom! Yes, the HCG PR has created quite a stir in our little world, hasn't it? Lots of people have been pining for those metal shrouds... and, at last, here they come!

Thank you very much, too, for your e-mail. I'll respond in full this weekend. :D

As this thread got a bit OT at this point I've moved* the subsequent posts to the "The UK bans the import of replica weapons/props" thread as things here very quickly turned into a discussion of UK laws again.

We should keep this thread for discussion of the HCG Pulse Rifle of course, as the title suggests! :)

Harry
