The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I got very curious about something tonight. I was reading the new Firefly companion book, and reading the interview with Joss talking about the characters in it hit me that I'd seen them before.

The crew of the Betty in Alien: Ressurection, which was written by our man Joss Whedon.

There are some big parrellels.

Johner is probably the closest in Jayne. Not just J-names, but character wise too.

Captain Elgyn is very much a shady side of Mal Reynolds. Christie is also the take charge, no frills type and seems to have a glimmer of Mal in there.

I can't remember her name but Elgyn's co-pilot definately has a Zoe vibe, and given the past and sexual tension Wash used to see between them, maybe what could have been.

Call is an android cousin to Kaylee in a way.

Vriess is sort of another side of Kaylee being the mechanic.

And The Betty sure has a Serenity feel to it. Old ship full of pirates using old weapons and working on the fringe.

The captain even says "recon" a few times, and his dialogue in general hints at what Firefly became, and even some of the dialogue in that show is close.

So, we have the archetypes there. Captian, Mercenary, a female warrior who is a trusted right hand of the captain (maybe not so mcuh an archetype).

I can see a glint of Firefly in the Alien! Hmmm. Interesting.

Now I'm not saying Joss intended for them to be the same, but he has said he's had the concept for Firefly for awhile, so perhaps he just did some creatiev borrowing to get the Alien screenplay completed. Or maybe it wasn't a completed idea then, just a feeling and Alien helped him complete it in his mind.
