The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hear, hear! Good man Nick. :)

Now find that damn handle.

Someone who knows a bit about motorbikes said to me that it looks way too hefty to be that brake thing Harry. Although I wonder if other vehicles have similar brake parts. Hmm. He did say 'try kickstarters'.

Meanwhile I've been looking at aircraft handles, but it also reminds me of a throttle lever, or even a rudder pedal? Haven't found any yet of course - but I'm interested in those because we know they had aircraft parts lying around, and also because if you look closely (perhaps too closely) there seems to be some military green paint under the black on the 'handle'. Anyway, just suggestions.

I did have a look at the film too. Things I noticed:

1, none of the lights work. That is, they may have been wired up, who knows, but in the film none of them come on. Weaver just vaguely slaps at the coloured button/s and then pulls the handle.

2, she's so busy acting as if the handle is really hard to pull (which it clearly isn't) that she breaks it. If you look very closely at the base of the handle in the last few frames, she yanks it so hard that the white packing (which we can now see on the prop) is pushed out of position. Actually that's quite nice because it means the damage can be screen-matched.

I agree. I was only using that as an example as they were the first photos I found. Considering the art department used a lot of stuff from an aircraft breakers yard it could be that it's from a much larger aircraft wheel. What makes me think it is that is the 'tongue' at the bottom (near the broken section that you mentioned). That seems to match with one end of the brake part.

Yeah, I know what you mean - and well spotted on the green paint there! :)

Since I was drawing up the lettering anyway, I continued with the outlines of the prop. This should help to get the size of everything (once the real-life TV part is overlaid onto it).

Image

I also figured out the stripes on the handle (I know, sounds easy doesn't it):

Image

Of course these are idealised, ie more regular than on the real prop.

Sorry for the delay, but I finally took the TV apart yesterday. I took loads of photos just in case, but most of them are just wires and PCBs.

So on with the show!

The TV as it came to me (dog for scale only).

Image

And here's the all-important panel:

Image

The lower end does indeed open:

Image

Image

Bingo! Three knobs, just where we thought they would be. :) Even the little square hole for the AFC switch is visible on the prop (now we know where to look).

Hmm, this is interesting:

Image

It says: 06A4-701 ELCO 4249 Issue (H)

And finally the crucial piece removed. Answers a lot of questions. :)

Image

I was worried that the red window would be spot-welded in, but no - it just pops out.

Image

There was really very little else in the TV that looked promising for props. The handles were probably the most likely...

Image

Of course you could light a fire in here and call it a Terminator prop...

Image

I stand by my original theory that they may only have had the casing, or even just this panel, to start with. I also think this panel may appear on many different TVs. However, it looks dead-on to me. So Nick - respect due!

But wouldn't it be nice to find this in the film somewhere?

Image

Actually...

Image

I wonder!

;)

That's it for now. I'm off to tidy up my plan drawing, which should help us with the sizes of the various lights and things. I'll report back when that's done.

Well I`ll be,that is indeed the best Terminator prop I`ve ever seen (kidding).

Seriously well done to Nick (Eagle Eyes) & Mike for showing us via his hands on.

Nice to see the TV came apart so easily for you Mike.

There were a lot of TV back panels used as set dressing (colony, AP station, Sulaco). Would be interesting to see if this TV set was used....

Cheers,
Stefan

I wonder what the original prop guys would think about the success rate we have with identifying the random parts they used in all these props...

I'm still interested Mike! :)

Prepping for Dragon Con is a priority at the moment of course though, but I still intend to make myself a replica once I find the right TV and source the buttons and amber lamps etc. - not to mention continue searching for the 'handle', although it shouldn't be too hard to scratch build. same goes for the 'frame' of the unit too.

I'm pretty sure the rectangular buttons and the lamps are still available, and I did try looking on the RS website for them but searching for anything on there takes absolutely ages; I think I'll have to order myself some catalogues.

Now that you have the TV speaker unit how does the whole thing scale up in comparison to the measurements given in the auction description?

You would ask when I'm at home and my plan is at work.

It's hard to be 100.00% precise as there's some perspective in the photograph. However I was right when I said it definitely isn't 11x13 anything, as that ratio is off.

The rectangular switches are most probably from Saia-Burgess (No. 501000 for momentary, 511000 for Latching and 551000 for indicator only). The tapered black plastic bezel is 18mm x 24mm and 6mm high. The lens cap (sold separately) adds another 4.3mm in height and is 14mm x 20mm. It is available in opaque and transparent and in quite a few colors. For the airlock release you'd need transparent red (No. 461412) and transparent blue (No. 461312). Lighting can be added to the switches, but was apparently not used in the movie.

Cheers,
Stefan

Mike,

could you give us the dimensions of the frame (without the small addon pieces)?

Cheers,
Stefan

I don't know what you mean by small addon pieces, but here's what I got when I scaled from the TV piece:

Image

- so it's a little under 11" by a little over 13".

Good work there Mike. I presume the auction catalogue only listed approximate sizes to give potential buyers a rough guide as to how big the item is - I suppose in that context there's no need to be exact.

The more I look at it the more the 'frame' or whatever you call it looks familiar too. Grid owners, it's not anything from the innards of a Gridcase is it?

Harry

Mike,

I was refering to the frame (e.g. the outer rim) of the TV panel part (or the red part in your drawing). Sorry, if I wasn't clear enough.
However, the overall dimensions are nice too. :)

The picture with black/yellow stripes for the grip looked somewhat wrong to me. I assume you made it in such a way that the stripes continue endlessly (e.g. they don't end after one turn). I've toyed with my 3D program and now I'm pretty sure that in the original the stripes end after one turn. (I guess I'll have to post a picture....)

Cheers,
Stefan
