The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

SSgt Burton, just thought I'd chime in here since you asked for my opinion, and to keep this tread alive...

I am 100% with you. My only points are that I don't know about the patch on the lower sleave, and that 3-D gold Marine insignias are the way to go. You definitely have something very cool there.

I hope to see more fans in their Dress Blues!

3-D gold Marine insignias? Am I missing something?

Hey many thanks for the input Dave! :D

So I mentioned in another thread that I bought the boxset of those other US Space Marines- Space: Above and Beyond.

Earlier in this thread it was said that they wear regulation US Marines Dress Blues on that show all the time. Which is true. The officers wore the standard black tunic with royal blue pants and officer bloodstripe.

Up until episode 18...

In that episode Lt Shane Vanssen gets promoted to captain. Imagine my surprise when I saw the uniforms...

Image

This looks almost exactly like the first couple of mock ups we brainstormed!

Looks like they changed the pants to navy blue. Nearly black. The collar was slightly modified as well to add a red and blue trim:

Image

And the decoration ribbons were switched to a one piece plastic looking replica. What's odd is that in subsequent episodes they went back to the standard decoration ribbons. :? :?:

No no- your not missing anything Derek. When I emailed Dave and showed him the pics- he suggested that the Delta collars be gold instead of coloured, and that if they could be 3D- like the standard Eagle Globe Anchor of regulation Dress Blues.

Some trivia for ya, the bloodstripe is for the battle of Chapultepec, where 90% of the casualties were Officers and NCOs. Not just the NCOs; I had to edit that.

And, Devildog, yep, it was just my opinion that 3-D gold Marine insignias (for the collar and the hat (cover)) would look better than the red, white, and blue flat (2-D) Marine insignias.

Evidentally no one on that show knew how to properly size and wear a USMC cover.

*shakes head*

I like the deltas we have now, or rather, that Derek has... 8)

And I'm still with the idea of using the Screaming Eagle as the cover device.

Are these matters now being reconsidered? Just curious.

Not to turn this into a S:AAB discussion but...

They took a lot of liberties on that show. I'm sure it was partly due to "artistic licence" and the law against actors being in full uniform. For instance check out the ridiculous hairdo on Hawkes here:

Image

He was sporting this mop until the 12th episode where he finally got a more neatly trimmed cut (nowhere near the high and tight regulation haircut though). I'm sure the show received many letters to bring about that change.

There was a pleasent surprise in the pilot though:

Image

R. Lee Ermey played D.I. Sgt. Major "Bougus" practically reprising his role as GySgt Hartman in FMJ (minus the foul language of course).

And talk about changing the uniform to abide by the law... check this out!

Image

Correct me if I am wrong, but do they wear campaign covers with Dress Blues?

Never the less S:AAB was a pretty cool show. Too bad it only lasted one season.

Far as I know we are still going to use Dom's v2 challenge coin with the Eagle facing outward. I just have to get around to attaching a screwpost to the back of one.

I loved S:AAB! Still haven't got round to getting it on DVD.

I think they just stuck Vansen in any old uniform - look at the state of that jacket on her! And I thought I had short arms! ;)

When I graduated from Parris Island, some of the Drill Instructors were in their Dress Blues with, yes, their Green D.I. cover. It looked (and still looks) so weird.

Although I am almost positive that the gold EGA is never worn on the D.I. cover.

It probably obvious to anyone with knowledge about it, but Sgt. Major Bougus' ribbons are either all out of order, or they are for different awards.

Of course, its all made up for a sci-fi show anyway; no big deal. I was sad to see it go, too.

And, yeah, Mole, she needs someone to fit her better!

sharpuscm, I love it! But, why did you use that side of the coin? The other side is the Emblem, man!

By the way, it would be SIMPLE for anyone with some resin casting experience to make copies of that coin. Simple and cheap. Of course, I don't know where the coin came from and what it costs, but there it is.

Now... tell me that at least one of you guys or gals carries that coin around with them and has slapped it down at a bar where some of you were drinking. And please tell me that someone knows what I'm talking about!

Sorry I've been away so long, been very busy lately and still haven't played with any of my USCM gear

I'm still keen to create a dress USCM costume and am 100% commited to this project, just haven't had the time to get my ideas down for it.

I'm going to be ordering the absolutely necessary items as soon as I can and will then be able to have a really good play with bits and pieces myself to see what I can come up with and throw even more spanners in the works ;)

Again; what's happened to the pins we chipped in for btw?

The Delta side is the flatter side, making it easier to affix the pin. The screaming eagle is a little too much relief for something to lie flat on it. ... and believe it or not, the SE is the actual logo of the USCM, only Apone & Drake wore it on their attire, the other grunts had the SE.

Oh, we all know what a challenge coin is used for... :) I also carry my regiment's one every day as well. The rest of the grunts know not to challenge me at DCon, 'cuz I bring a box of them. The original discussion thread is here.

That's why I was asking; I'm well aware of how bad it sucks to have someone recast something of yours. I was curious if the coin was some just generic thing that is no longer available.

And I thought the official USCM Emblem was the 'Atari' swoosh looking thing. Since its not, obvoiusly the Screaming Eagle is the way to go.

Very cool!

Lastly, thanks for the counter!

The Delta side is the flatter side, making it easier to affix the pin. The screaming eagle is a little too much relief for something to lie flat on it.

When we were brainstorming what kind of cover device we wanted (a loooong time back), we pretty much wanted an Eagle. The Eagle symbolizes the Colonial Marines, and there was also a concern that we would be overusing the Delta symbol.

Rather than having another custom device made, the easiest solution was to use Dom's challenge coin. Dom and I had a conversation on which side of the coin to use, and we chose to go with the Eagle side as the opposite Delta side would allow something to easily be attached to. (Did that make any sense? )

So tonight I attached a flathead screw to my coin with some 5min epoxy:

Image

Basically I was trying to duplicate how a USMC Eagle/Globe/Anchor device attaches to a service cap.

Image

Image

Worked like a charm! :D

Best part is I can remove it anytime I please (such as transferring it to a campaign hat  ).

I had also bounced around the idea of spraypainting it gold for my Dress Blues- however I've decided it looks fine as is.
