I was reading through the archives and saw that "Aervoe 999 Earth Brown" was suggested as a spray can stand in for Brown Bess. Not identical but really close.

Unfortunately all the pictures are now down. Did anyone try this color? Good results? Or is there a better alternative?

From what I remember of the picutres, Aervoe 999 was nearly an exact match.

If anyone knows Jesse DeGraf's email- please give him a shout. He took the original pics and may still have them on his computer.

I'm going to try my own brew of BB with some Model Master olive drab and schokoladenbraun (I think that's British or something ). Fortunately I still have a tin of BB to compare it to.

I think it's very suitable, could use a tiny bit more brown or burnt umber in the mix but IMHO I think that after the finish is handled, worn and weathered, the difference is negligable.

I will say this though that the aervoe paint is a bit touchy, it takes some work to get a smooth finish, I generally empty some in a cup, thin it more and use it in an airbrush, so I can have more control.

So youve had some trouble using it in the spray can format Matt?

i have 3 cans of Aervoe and compared to BB, it's too "clean" of a version, maby a black wash and it would be great but it has the right propertys of the part and unlless u compare em side by side you wouldn't know.....but it makes a GREAT touch up paint or by it's self, but side by side it like showing something in light vs in dark

Ok I said earlier I was going to do my own homebrew of BB.

Originally I tried mixing MM (Model Master) Olive Drab with MM Schokoladenbraun. It came out much too green for BB no matter how much of the Schokoladenbraun I put in (I'm assuming that's German for chocolate brown?).

So onto plan B (no pun intented).

I went with some MM Field Drab- this is a much more brown kind of olive drab (for lack of a better description) adding a little bit of the Schokoladenbraun until I thought it looked close to BB (I still have a tin to compare it to).

And here are the results...




The top stick is pure MM Olive Drab. The bottom two are BB and my custom mix. Can you tell which is which?

Yes, you are correct... wow Kev, I didn't know you speak German!

I guess the real test will be to see if your new mix changes colors in different light the same way BB does.
