The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

what I wonder though is how long the nostromo was out there before getting the derelict signal?

I think in the movie it seemed like they received the signal and were pulled out of warp (or hyperspace...whatever they call it in the Alien universe).

But it was illuded too that the "company" knew about the derelict for some time far in advance of the Nostromo in that area and set things up for the Nostromo to "accidentaly" get the signal, land on the planet, etc.
That's why Ash was on the Nostromo in the first place.

In Alien Lambert says it'll take 10 months to get from LV426 back to earth in the Nostromo.

Burke tells Ripley that she's been in space for 57 years and that the Narcissus had drifted through the core systems i.e it was heading away from earth when it as salvaged. But... wasn't Ripley dreaming when Burke tells her this ;)

It's an odd scene, because she was dreaming when Burke tells her about the 57 years.

I believe it is implied that she had already spoken with Burke and that conversation had now worked itself into her dream.

The scene where Burke informs her about her daughter confirms the amount of time.
(Although, that scene was not in the original release)

But, the statement of the colonists being on LV, confirms at least 20 of those years.

I'd also say that building Gateway Station and Atmosphere Processor took quite some time...

The conversation between Ripley and Dallas on the Nostromo says that the regular science officer was replaced with Ash a day or two before they left Thedus (where they picked up the mineral ore cargo). Since it was Ash's job all along to protect the Alien and bring it back to Earth- the company did know about the derelict (or at least the signal) before the Nostromo crew found it.

Kev beat me to it. Although you can get into all sorts of RetCon ("retroactive continuity") arguments about the Weyland and Yutani corporations and their exposure to Aliens and Predators in the AVP movies, and whether or not those should be considered part of the canon timeline... either way, it's clear from the beginning of the very first film onward that Weyland-Yutani knew about these things from the get-go.
