The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Yeah, it wouldn't bother some people, but you KNOW there are people out there who would send it back if the straps were wrong.

:)

And if anyone in the UK needs some of those chin straps, I sent a bunch of them to Geordi a while back when he did that big UKG mass order. He may still have some left.

I'll see if I have any left. It's rare these days that I get those with the helmets though.

Cheers Spat, it would really be appreciated. 8)

If you find a few going spare, I'd honestly be more than happy to post them out to members over here, who need some, for free.

Of course unless Geordi pops in offering some of the ones you sent him, if he has any left.

What do people think of these ear defenders?
http://www.positivehands.co.uk/products ... 18100.html

Been looking for a while for some and although not exactly screen accurate, they do have the side mounts and a more squared off shape than most.
Best price I've seen em for too and free delivery.

Ordered a pair, at worst I think I can use the ear pads on my resin one.

Well this weekend I had a go at cutting the piece out of my helmet.
I only had one cutting disc left for my cheapo dremel like hobby tool, but I thought I'd give it a go. :?
Honestly couldn't believe how easy it was, done in under an hour. 8)

Also had a go at making an aluminium earpiece to go with the ear defenders (above post) I bought.
Made a jig for the vented piece out of some mdf taped it together in place, with the 1mm aluminium and stuck it in my little vice.
A few final wacks with the hammer to tighten vice fully, and couldn't believe it, it worked out pretty well. :D

Cut it to shape.

Made the hinge parts by bending the tabs around the rod with pliers.

I riveted a piece inside to fix the chin strap to and added a backing plate.

Also added a second piece of alu to the piece to fix to the helmet.
Nees tidying a little but I'm pleased with the result. :D

Now thinking things were going so well tried to drill the fixing holes in the bloody helmet and no chance.
Tried different dremel tools, various drill bits (not cheapo ones) and they just about scratched the surface :?

So any advice on what drills (cobalt?) might do the job would be appreciated?

And finally Mole (Vicky?) PM me if you are possibly interested in the set of resin earpieces I might now have spare.

Very nice! I've only got so far as marking out my helmet, just haven't found the time to actually try cutting it.

PM sent.

Cobalt drill bits are pretty tough but expensive. Also I suggest using a center punch and big hammer before you drill. Some OT trivia, I shot a helmet and liner with a .45 ACP 230 gr FMJ at 10 meters and it bounced off but did flattened the helmet (imagine wearing that while shot...can you say "headache"?). The second shot went straight thru. A 9 mm 125 gr FMJ punched thru on the first shot.

This is precisely why I don't bother wearing my helmet anymore!

Right, as I didn't have access to a 9 mm 125 gr FMJ, I got some cobalt drills.

Broke the 3 smallest ones, didn't make much of an impact.

So used one of the harder small grinding wheels on the dremel. 8)

Ground it away till just about breaking through, ground it a bit more then from the inside, then used one of the remaining cobalt drills to go through and open the holes up.

Need to drill and attach the camera to it now. :?

Where have people drilled through their cameras to attach it to the helmet?

Have you put bolts through it, with the nuts inside the helmet?

I might have a go then at making the helmets front armour plate out of 1.2mm Aluminium. :?

Cheers
Martin

Here's my Spat helmet, showing the camera position:

Image

As you can see, the front plate has a section of the side/end cut in to allow the front of the camera housing to sit flush against it.

The main camera body is solid resin, held in place by two large screws with are pushed through holes from inside the helmet into the resin body.

Cheers for that PVB. 8)

I thought I'd seen some somewhere, that were screwed, from outside, right through the camera and helmet, then bolted with nuts on the inside. :?

Just thought it might be stronger than screwing straight into the resin. :?

Possibly, but bear in mind that using bigger bolts/rivets/screw heads on the inside of the helmet, might make the inner liner not fit as good as it should. Mine protrudes down/out a little more than I think it should even with the supplied ones, as shown here:

Thanks again for the great pic steve. 8)

Yes, I know what you mean about the liner being pushed in.

Could possibly go with countersunk on inside, recessed nut on outside. :?

Sounds like a plan.

Now all we need is a deck of cards. 8)

My helmet cam is attached with one bolt going through the resin camera and a nut on the inside. The liner has a small corresponding hole cut in the side of it to allow for the nut. It doesn't push the liner in obviously and it doesn't protrude far enough to cause any problems with rubbing against my head or anything.

You can see some pics here

http://www.friendly-skies.co.uk/Helmetcamtutorial.html.

3rd row of pics from the bottom.

Cheers

Darren

If anyone needs a set of helmet chin straps, PM me.

Spat was kind enough to send some of them through to me with the armour. 8)
Have been so busy as of late, I'd forgotten about them, and they have been in the box with the armour waiting for me to have time to work on it.

Anyway, I'll post them out to anyone in the UK free of charge.
