Can you tell what it is yet?



I've dug out my old steel pot with the idea of converting it a certain well known piece of headwear. Obviously I'm missing a few pieces so here's the big question - does anyone offer the bits to finish my helmet? I've considered trying to make the lobster plates myself but it would make life so much easier if someone has them already.

I'm sure someone here will chip in and point you in the right direction.
But for starters Spatmen here does the full helmet + the parts you're after http://www.spatcave.com/index.html ( in the Store section ) not sure whether he just does the parts on their own though.

You'll have some fun cutting and drilling the helmet itself in various places though. I did mine with a hand grinder and hand drill - went through some grinding discs and drill bits doing that.Understandably that steel is a bit tough and laughs in the face of the old 99p B+Q special drill bits.

Looking back, it would probably have been easier to just mark it up and found somewhere local that has an Oxyacetylene axe/torch and got them to do it. Like a welders/metal fabricators that type of place.

I made my own steel pot as well.








I cut the section for the earpiece by hand with a hacksaw.


I would not recommend doing it that way.

The front strike plate and lobster plates were handcrafted myself out of plasticboard. They aren't really that difficult to reproduce.

Stephen210 is selling a set of lobster plates- not sure if they are still available though. Try the seach feature for the thread or just pm Stephen.

The earpiece and boom mike again were handmade out of a set of ear defenders (from a Canadian brand) and a steel rod with washers and foam rubber for the microphone itself.

The accurate Beyerdynamic microphones come up on ebay occassionally- but can be uber expensive.

By the way- as much as I love the helmet, I don't wear it anymore while trooping; after having it on your head for a couple of hours it feels like you are wearing an anvil.

And if you're planning to cut up that steel pot helmet yourself, be sure to be VERY careful. Without proper tools, or training, you can seriously hurt yourself, or spend a month trying to cut into it.

I cut a hole in my helmet for the camera mod and used a dremmel with the fiber reenforced disks. Didn't take long at all.

I got a question here.

Hopefully will be getting a fine shiny new set of Spatmans Marine suit of protection soo. I want to replace the liner with one of my WW2 airborne liners is there any modification to the liner for the ear pieces? or is it just to the shell?

Now I am not sure with the chin strap hook up that plan will work.
Oh well was just thinkin how that the chin strap and all that the airborne had then would look sweet. But if it won't work no biggy.

Thanks for the pointers guys.

I know a couple of people that might have access to an oxy torch so that's something to look into.

It's really more of a display piece I'm going for. Don't fancy lugging that thing around with me. And besides, when it's on my tiny melon it looks stupid.

Yeah, sorry guys. I'm swamped as it is trying to make full suits of armor and complete helmets, and just don't have the time to start making kits of my armor.

But, you can save yourselves the time and hassle of finding the parts and cutting the steel and all that jazz by just ordering a helmet from me.

This way you always know what you're getting and how it's going to turn out.

Well I've got a set of Spats armour and helmet, coming soon hopefully, but I'm also trying to make my own helmet.

I'm also waiting for Spats to arrive so I can see how it all goes together, positioning, cuts, new ear flap chinstrap placement etc.

Got all the bits, just need to find someway of cutting the bloody helmet with my limited tool box.
There will be blood flowing at some stage I'm sure.

You could always contact Cris at Propdealr@aol.com he sells all the helmet bits seperately and other USCM stuff.

Got any info/pics on how the chinstrap is attached to the ear flap?

I am right in thinking the normal attachment point is removed in the cut out?

Just remember, adding a chin strap to the helmet voids any chance of a warranty on that helmet!

The left chin strap attaches through the ear flap, and that ear flap is not meant to be a stress point, or to support any weight. Using it just for looks is fine, but close the chins strap and run around, and there's a good chance of snapping off the ear flap.

Which is one of the reasons that I don't include the chin strap with the helmets.

yes spats right there. i had to just epoxy glue the left strap in place so no way would it take the weight of the helmet if i did it up. just for show

I was really talking about the one I'm making, not the one I'm expecting off you Shortly (any news?).

So yours do not come with the chin straps then?
Never noticed to be honest, if I add one to yours in the future, I'll obviously take your advice to hand.
I much prefer them hanging down, or tucked into helmet band anyway.

No, it would be almost impossible for me to supply chin straps on all my helmets.

The second reason that I don't supply them is that fans would never be happy unless they got the exact chinstraps seen in the films, and those are very hard to find. When I get a helmet in from a surplus place, it usually has a chin strap on it, but it's a new one, with a snap closure. If I included them, some buyers would be happy, but many others would complain that they are not screen accurate since the film used ones were WWII style ball and sockets. It's very rare that I get those in. There are places online that sell those chin straps for $15-$30. Just for the chin straps!

So, I either annoy people with the wrong chin straps, or give them none. I choose none.

And Martin, your armor is in the works right now, and should be painted by the end of the weekend, and may ship by Friday the 25th or so.
