The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

P.S. Suggest that the insert graphic be much more simple. At such a small size that text would be near illegible and poor Chris unrecognizable.

I found this place online. They have black elastic armbands with a clear pocket. Was thinking we could insert the memorial graphics or something and wear these. The nice thing is that we can wear these in our out of uniform. What do you guys think?

I'm of course all for the armband... but I think some of this might be getting rushed a little bit.

Nothing personal against Dom or his current proposal, I know his heart is in the right place... but I cannot believe this was all suddenly decided since only yesterday afternoon. DragonCon is several months away, and I am highly interested in exploring other options and doing this right.

There are a lot of creative and design-orientated people on this board, and I think we should all have a chance to contibute or offer suggestions regarding something as important as this, especially if it is something to be worn by most (if not all) of the marines attending DragonCon this year.

That said, I firmly believe that the thicker black band would prove to make a stronger impact as to the reason we are wearing it. I also believe that the graphic design should be greatly simplified to provide a stronger impact to those that see it. Again, nothing personal against the graphic Dom presented.

This is all about Chris, and representing both him and the entire USCM Corp properly -- and with serious heart.

A black 'mourning' armband, should be just that -- BLACK. It really should be devoid of all colour and should NOT be allowed to blend into the business of the rest of our colourful patches and armour graffiti.

This is what I had been loosely thinking all along...

Image

It may not be quite as cheap or easy -- or maybe it will. Regardless, that's not the point. The point is for this to armband to present itself boldly without any unnecessary fluff, and to speak volumes without anyone really having to question who or what. I guarantee this armband will stand out like a sore thumb everywhere, especially in the parade.

We could even add his registration ID if we felt it didn't busy it up too much. Sometimes less is more.

I open the floor to all opinions and thoughts.

I've started a new thread to address this armband issue seperately... HERE.

Great idea Rick, I am certainly not against it... although I feel that the black band is for mourning. After a discussion with Mike on this subject, I feel that by September, I should no longer be mourning Chris, I should remember him.

Regardless, I don't see why both these ways to pay tribute to our friend shouldn't be available. If you get them made, I will certainly get one... in fact it would suit my Service C (or Dress Blues) a lot more than the ID armband, so I would definitely be in for one as well.

I will however go forward with Dave's & and my original idea, and will leave it to the individual preference.

Although we may not be literally mourning him come September, it would be appropriate to be remembering him in that fashion since that will be the first DragonCon assembly without him.

Moreso, the point of further discussing the 'armband' design and presentation is to try and prevent what you just brought up.

We really should try to avoid having TWO dramatically different armbands in honor of Chris. We need to portray a sense of unity among his friends, and the entire USCM Corp -- and that really requires a single sanctioned armband that ALL marines wear.

I'm not trying to be difficult or impose some sort of dictatorship-like ruling, and I'm not saying that nobody should be allowed to do their own thing in memory of Chris.

What I'm saying is that we should think seriously about this, and all discuss and agree to a single armband design to be worn by ALL marines at DragonCon.

The statement this makes will be felt 1000 fold stronger.

Rick... there's no need to convince me twice, I like your idea... but I also like the photo too. There's nothing wrong with having one, the other or both.

All I really need to point out is that I bought 30 of these things before you launched your idea.

On a side note, only 8 spots left on Chris' memorial plaque, still accepting signatures.
