The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

The part of the "cable" that interested me are the double, single-knurled rings on the connector (within the cage) shown here.

More to follow...

Looks like the end of a bicycle tyre type pump hose to me. Sure they have a knurled section like that with the screw thread that attaches to the pump just past it.

That's exactly what I was thinking. This is the best image I could find online (ignore the little red collar):

Image

Looks right to me. Don't know what the 'cage' part is from but I think there's one of these inside it. :)

Nice find Mike! That's a hell of a lot better than my photo!! :D
All I've got is my crappy phone camera which doesn't have any macro facility so close-ups are a nightmare.

I was looking at it and thought "I've got one in the cupboard, let's have a look..."

Three of us thinking the same thing, I think we can probably be safe in assuming that's the job...
:D

I like this game!!

Old is right!
I've only seen a double ring, single-knurled end like that on the attachments for the old, plain style valves; befor the "car type" pin vavles came out.

Just been out to the shed and just on the off chance checked the pump from my year old mountain bike. It's just like the image Mike posted with the single knurled ( word of the day there ) bit.

If you look closely at the forward hose, you'll see that the connector has flat sides to allow the use of a spanner.
It would be interesting to know, if the cage is a part of the connector or just added for the looks.

Cheers,
Stefan

The (seemingly) more common "Schrader" valve:
Image

Most of the adapters I've seen for this type of valve have a large all single-knurled barrel like this:
Image

Rather than the double section single-knurling in Mikle's photo and as per the helmet.

Do you mean the collar part between the knurled connector and the braided portion?
Image
If so, I'm afriad that doesn't have flat sides, it is round. The lines are where the collar is crimped to hold the braided sheath.

And, if memory serves, they also help the tube to stay plugged in when you slide it back inside the pump for storage.

Yes. Unless you have the type with a second, outter collar (the little red collar in your photo) which protects the crimped connector. In which case it's that part which provides the interference fit to keep it snug inside the handle.

Take a look at the picture with both hoses (http://forum.alienslegacy.com/download/file.php?id=291&mode=view) and you can see that the one toward the front of the helmet has a flat area in the knurled section.

Cheers,
Stefan

Ah, my appologies. I'll have a look...

I see where you mean.

I must admit I don't think the cage was part of it.
If these are indeed bicycle pump adapters (I think it's pretty likely) then they would be attached by hand with perhaphs, as in this case, the provision for a little help from a pair of pliers for those stubborn threads.
In either case (fingers or pliers) the cage would make it very difficult to attatch and would be unnessecary.

Hello friends,
...about the stereo phone jack:
it is a 2.5 mm (diameter) version!

We can follow the TOBY catalog (pdf link by Stefan)...
checking the original piece used on the helmet, ...that TOBY phone jack appears very, very close...
but we can say, without problem, ...the "same" !!!

but with smaller dimensions ...
Front: ... NOT 9mm x 10.5 as per Toby drawing
but 8mm x 9mm
High: ... NOT 9mm as per Toby drawing
but 8mm

Bye
Giò

See what you're saying Stefan.

Seeing as it appears that this is a pump hose, I wonder if that flat edge was made so the hose could be cracked off the pump with a spanner if is was proving hard to unscrew it?.

If memory serves me right, bicycles over here around that time came with a little one piece flat multitool that had various spanner sized cut outs in it for doing basic maintenance. Perhaps there was one part of that tool that was the size of the flat section of that hose?

Not saying it is from a bike pump. I've got an old foot pump with the same sort of hose on it out in the garage. I'll check it in the morning.

Just a thought.

Now that's interesting.
The 2.5mm jacks were not particularly common.
So it's not a headphone jack.

Today 2.5mm jacks are sometimes used for audio but more commonly found as video connectors on small units such as digital cameras where space is at a premium.
They are also often used as simple data and power connectors on various equipment... small camcorders etc.

Given that we are probably looking at a piece of kit produced around the early to mid 80's I think the chances are marginally greater that it was used as a low voltage power connector for something.

Closest I can find, but the connectors are located differently:

Giò,

thanks for the data! I think I found the correct one now. It has the Type designation PCJ 210. See here:

We'll need to also get a suitable nut to go with those...

Just as an aside, someone asked me earlier if there was anything that made me think that those Toby units wern't the one used on the helmet and it just occured to me, the ones we've found so far are all threaded along the length of the shaft; the one on the helmet it only threaded on the lower portion, the exposed part being smooth.

Who actually makes these things for purchase online? Couldn't find any order info on that site.

The round nut is one of the order options. You had me almost convinced with the thread thing. Then however I had a look at this picture:
http://forum.alienslegacy.com/download/file.php?id=285&mode=view
Here you can see that the thread goes right up to the top.

Cheers,
Stefan
