The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Looking good Birdie. If you should make casts of these and do a run then I'd be in for a set I'm sure.

Cheers

The right hand piece should be complete by tomorrow. The 'tower' section is attached to a disk with the rest of the detailing on (not pictured) which fits inside the helmet once the 'ears' have been cut out. Should be able to get some pics up tomorrow.

I've just ordered some braided cable for the detail on the right side.

Hope to start building the left hand greeblies by the weekend.

Has anyone figured out a list of what most of the actual components are made of?
I'd also like to know what sizes the helmets correspond to- I've seen them listed on surplus sites as small, medium, large, and extra large. Anyone know what "hat size" or actual head measurement that corresponds to? Like, my head is 22/23 inches around. I think that is a size 7 1/8? I know that that would normally correspond to a "large", are the helmets standardized like that?

AFAIK the only part that has been positiveley I'ded is the Megatron barrel. I can see what looks like kitbashed plane fins and tank wheels, but couldn't find a match on any of the kitbash sites.

I just noticed that the correct part is what I've marked as 'B' here, not part 'A' like Birdie has used, is that right?

(I'm not knocking what you've done Si, just an observation is all).

Rick, hope you don't mind me using your image. Any problems PM me and I'll take it down.

So what has everyone else been doing up to now with their helmets? I'd like to see some pics of what other people have modded up in place of the "SA" stuff.

Mine has the 'Fly the friendly skies' lettering on it but so far I haven't adapted the ear cups. I'm waiting for something like Birdie's replica to put in them before the hacksaw and Dremel come out!

This might make it clearer. Megatron part is in red, parts I've added in orange/green.

Out of the box, you need to unscrew the Meg part, which separates into two halves. You need to take out a part inside to give you the hole where the 'tank wheel' is mounted.

I'll probably swap out the knob I put in (orange)when I can get a more suitable greeblie.

Sorry Simon.

What made me think it wasn't the right part is that on yours there's no recess with the ring around it that surrounds the knob on the top. I doubt that Terry Reed would have added that on so I wonder if there's a similar Megatron part with that detail on it.

Harry

The pic of the original prop is misleading the eye. There is a hole in the outer shell (which is hollow)under which they have stuck a flat surface ( a piece of metal or styrene). The hole is for an extraneous piece of megatron that has been removed (see my post above).

The knob has a smaller circumference than the hole, so it sits on the flat surface, slightly lower than the rim of the hole.

With shadowing this gives the illusion of a ring.

I removed the knob from my build. You can see the hole with a flat piece of styrene glued underneath:

Image

I then added circular disk closer to the size of the original knob. Hope this demonstrates what I'm trying to explain above.

Photos lie - curse of the prop replicator :D

The original knob looks to have teeth - some kind of cog,or maybe a model tank wheel?

Hi Simon!

Sorry to say this now that you have done that much work on it allready, but I think Harry is right and you got the wrong part (the Chinese copies differ slightly from the originals):

Well spotted Herr Millimeter!

Si I think if you put a tube in the hole it should look the same if the wall thickness matches that of the original.

I wonder how much more of these detail parts are made from Transformers parts?!

Stefan,

Do you have a decent pic of that original meg part?

I'm not really getting what you guys are saying. That there is a ring around the hole?

Did you retain the cut out sections of the helmet? Weren't those what the "greeblies" were mounted to?

Russ

I beleve they either mounted the greeblies on a flat plate, that was attached inside the cutout ears, or they were fixed to the plastic earpieces inside the helmet.

Some pictures show the fabricated parts 'swinging free' as if only attached to the earpiece, others they seem firmly attached in the 'ear' cutout.

I'm going with the latter, should have some pics up tomorrow

Ah, gotcha. Either way, it all looks great to me. It would be nice to finally do something with my flight helmets (other than dust them). :)
