The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hey all. I was just wondering what folks thoughts were regarding color preference between Brown Bess and OD green on a PR. I realize that BB is the color of choice for a screen accurate PR, but I think that OD just looks better.

It was pointed out to me that part of the reason that BB was used in the first place was because of the way the movie was lit. The lighting skewed blue in the film and as a result OD green would not look right.

Anyway, just curious what people think about this.

I'm with you. BB may be accurate, but I personally despise this colour. :)

When people see us in costume they remember what we looked like in movie. The guns looked green in the movie. IMO green looks best and unless you're ALIENS nerds like us here you'll actually think something looks wrong if you see a Marine with a OD rifle standing next to a grunt with a BB one.

Next time you put your Aliens DVD in - check the scene where the marines are lining up to get in the APC (about 39:33 in). The shoulder lamp boxes, pulse rifles, flamers and the APC all look pretty brown to me.

I have been looking at some pics comparing BB with OD and I am still really leaning towards OD. Honestly, until I found out about BB I thought that PRs were painted OD. Maybe it was my brain projecting.

At this point I think I am going to go with OD on my PR. You purists can feel free to flame me.

Its Green!! :)

Would like to hear other peoples views as to why they conclude it is BB and more importantly what evidence they have to support this.

Please add your 10 cents worth explaining why! This is market research for the most accurate PR ever !

Thanks,

Mark

Found this on the net, looks pretty brown to me, assuming its a screen used PR.

The one thing i would love to know though is, how many of those little 14ml tins of brown bess it took to paint the full scale APC ????

Yup that is screenused - I own that piece!

However it was repainted years later so the color can not be relied on.

Good pic though, and thank you for your input!

From the extras on the dvd.

Good pic but not conclusive on the color. Could be BB or a dark drab green. Much like the movie itself the color could be either - the lighting plays tricks.

Thankyou for your input!

I think it is a pretty well established fact that all the Pulse Rifles/Flame throwers/SHoulder lamps/blah blah werer all painted Brown Bess in the movie.

These people matched a sample of BB i sent them, the first tin i got from them wasn't "matt" enough, but they just added more matting agent, colour wise im happy with the match, i would say its about 98% there.

Established by people who worked on the movie, or own the original props. People with a long standing stake in this forum.

Just my 2 cents.

Are the Rebel Fleet Trooper helmets from Star Wars white? What is the color of the racer top shirt from the new BSG?

What you see on screen isn't what you always get unless you ask the source.

And we have those sources.

It's pretty obvious from looking at the film that they're more brown then green - a brown which looks green when you shoot it with tungsten film under daylight colour temperature lights. Check the scene where Hick is showing Ripley the PR. I can tell you from personal experience Sigourney's skin isn't that shade of blue in real life. The hanger scene I mentioned above has much more neutral lighting so the props and vehicles look brown.

BB is very matte but is has a wierd sheen that reflects the colour of the surrounding light. which is why it's such a pain to match - if you don't match the matte-ness exactly it doesn't behave the same way.

There are plenty of production and post-production pictures or props, and the APC and DS (both miniature and full sized) and they're all the same colour brown.

Closest match I've managed to get is 3 parts Tamiya XF-51 to 1 part Tamiya XF-7 (acrylics). When airbrushed this is a very close match to colour and sheen of airbrushed Humbrol 170.

Hi John,

Still conjecture really.

Not trying to be awkward or pedantic, but who are these people who worked on the movie, these sources?
I have an original live fire "Hero" PR from Bapty's, and it is BB, but it has been repainted so that means nothing.

I am well aware that lighting makes a huge difference.

Now would you agree that the PR and the Sentry guns are the same color?

Thanks for taking the time to post!

Mark

Hi b26354,

Or a green that looks brown under certain light?

Do you have any pics of the APC or any other props that show them conclusively to be brown?

I know this is topic that has two schools of thought, both sides of which have strong convictions.

Thanks for your help.

Mark

I guess I'll 'personalise' the color of my pr as well as my armour (once I work out how to get them by customs)

BB or OG, either is good enough for me

When they were filmed... yes:

But who's to say the same person that repainted your pulse rifle didn't repaint one of the sentry guns.
