Hi all

I just got this new counter today which I thought I would share with everyone. I got this from http://www.aspeng.com.

You can see a demo video of the unit on their website.

The unit features a counter which reads 99 when turned on and then quickly counts down to 95. When it reaches 00 it needs to be reset. it has a trigger input for the Thompson part and also one for the shotgun part (grenade launcher). It also features 2 bright LEDs synchronised with these inputs.

The best part though is that the board also features sound output. This is the first one I have seen that is a combined counter and light and sound board.

HOWEVER, I had a few modifications made to mine that I would recommend others interested in this product to have done also.

When I watched the demo on the site I noticed that you didn't see the counter being reset so I wondered how this was done. I asked if you have to turn the counter off and then back on and this turned out to be the case.

I then asked if it were possible to have another input added to function as the "magazine inserted" input. So that the counter would read 00 when this switch was open (mag out) and then reset the counter when the mag was put back in.

I was told that this was not a problem and would be done for mere extra $30. When I said that I did not need the GL racking sound input the price of the modifications was reduced to $25 which was great. I plan to have another M870 in the cage so will not need that sound effect. But for those who do want that then the extra "mag" input can still be done.

Here is a short demo version of the unit that I received today. The sound is only being outputted directly to my PC speakers but still sounds pretty damn good. Once a pre-amp is in there I think this could seriously crank out the volume needed.

http://www.friendly-skies.co.uk/videos/ASPENGCounterandSound.wmv

The guy I got this from, Tim Shilling, was great to deal with and I had very good communication with him. He even sent a follow up email to check that I was happy with the product. At the time I was still waiting for it turn up but it was nice to see some after sales service for a change.

Cheers

Darren

That looks great Darren, thanks for shooting the video, it looks like a very impressive piece of kit - I might just have to get myself one of those! :)

Sixty: dont forget that if you want it to be the same as in the video I shot, you will need to specify the modifications to be made otherwise it will be the same as the demo video on the ASPENG website.

Cheers

There's a rockin' discussion going on in the M56 Effects Board thread thanks to this post, Darren :) I sent Tim Shilling a couple emails about the possibility of making a board for the smartgun and now he's latched on to the project and all sorts of excited about it.

One of the things I was thinking about at DragonCon this year was how much more awesome we would look if more of us had effects boards in our guns. Imagine the confrontation at the end of the sweep, but with all the marines' pulse rifles and smartguns blazing away with light and sound... worth saving our pennies up if you ask me ^_^

Customised, built and sent out in less than twenty four hours.

If anyone is wavering on whether or not to get one of these, I'd say this: Tim Shilling deserves your money.

Mike, I plan on installing mine in my airsoft Clone Thompson. I will connect the trigger input up to the original trigger, shouldnt be too hard. However, the clone Thompson I have is not being kept functional so you may have to make another hole to get the cables down to it. I dont have the hop up system or inner barrel in place anymore so access is not a problem for me.
You may also need to use a relay as if you connect it straight to the trigger whilst the airsoft battery is connected then this may put voltage down the cable and damage the board.

I think the Hyperdyne one was available for airsoft use with an additional relay circuit IIRC.

Cheers

Darren

I have the Hyperdyne I'm going to fit into my ACM based airsoft - no idea how the hell I'm going to fit it all in there and still allow it to fire but I'll be sure to include a full walk through on here of how I break my PR :P

That's what I had installed in my last rifle. Ran the counter through the relay to the airsoft motor. When it fired, it counted down.

@Darren: Um, what's the point of using an airsoft gun if you're demilling it?

Just curious is all.

I didn't want to use a Resin Thomspon or a deactivated one but I DID want one with some wieght to it, i.e. metal parts.

I wasn't prepared to pay for another Tokyo Marui one and gut it but when the clone came out for the price I paid I didnt mind losing the functionality and gaining the metal parts over resin or similar materials.

Cheers

Sorry for the late reply Mike! Mine's made by Hyperdyne, but it sounds pretty similar, and from what I understand, it is a real beeothch to install. There's not alot of room in the shrouds to work with. On mine, the speaker is vewy, vewy quiet... Matt hooked up the sound unit to his stereo and BLAM! It was loud!

This looks fantastic!
I wonder if he could add a reload sound-effect when the mag is inserted and the counter resets?
Also, at $120 for the full kit, it's great value for money!

Tim will customise the kit to your specs, just drop him a line.

I'm sure if you supplied a .WAV he'd be able to incorporate it!

Do you think that's really worth it? I opted out of the grenade launcher re-rack sound effect because my PR will have a Maruzen 870 in it which will make the noise anyway. If you were installing this on a standard G&P kit for example then the G/L re-rack sound would be good to have.

So for the same reason, if your using resin parts that dont make anything like the noise you would expect to hear then maybe it is a good idea but otherwise the action of taking the mag out and putting it back in with a "slap" should make the appropriate sound anyway.

Cheers

Hello,
ASPENG recently received permission to show a customers prop on our site. He had several modifications made and was able to successfully integrate it with his airsoft rifle. I have uploaded several pictures and a link to his video on youtube. I appreciate everyones support and hope to be able to continue to improve the counter to fit your needs.

Phil,

While we were on EZboard the search function never really worked like it should have done. Now that we've moved the search function works a treat if you need to look for stuff. :)

Woohoo!
My electronics kit arrived today (Friday) and I only ordered it sunday- built in the US and shipped to the UK in 5 days! Now that's service.

I bought a small mp3 player speaker from Argos, just to test out the sound kit. All is good, but it wasn't very loud.

Darren and Sixty, what amps and speakers have you gone for? I had a quick look at the Maplin website but soon got confused with all the talk of pre-amps, amps, ohms, watts etc.

Any advice appreciated!

Hi Phil

I havent bought a speaker yet. I have bought a small FM transmitter which I will house inside the gun but it will need to be accessable to change the frequenices if needed and turn on and off. That way I can have an external speaker with an FM reciever and this will allow for something bigger and beefier.

I think the sort of speaker that will go inside the gun itself wont be up to the job. Plus there wont be any room for one in mine anyway.

Cheers

Darren

Right, points to the man who can come up with a more amatuer (but working!) prototype...

AspEng counter, various wires and batteries, ColdHeat soldering iron for battery positioning, a cheapo speaker I had lying around and a build your own amp kit from Maplin...

On 15V, it's almost as loud as I can go without damaging my hearing! :p
