Derek (DevilDog)- could you show this around a bit and see what other opinions you get?
Oddly enough, I have. I'll post responses... sans names, of course.
I sent the image to an active Staff-Sergeant friend of mine. His response was, "I love ALIENS! That's awesome!!!"
I sent it to a reserve Gunnery-Sergeant friend of mine. His response was, simply, "sweeeeeeeet!" (the rest of the e-mail was about other non-related stuff)
I sent it to a retired Colonel I know. His response was, "I have no problem with that whatsoever."
I sent it to a Captain. His response was, "Got any Officers?!?!!"
I sent it to another Staff-Sergeant. His response was, "It's a damn coat; who cares." (then he went on to make fun of me for "dressing up" but... it's all in good fun because he's a damn Trekkie...)
To be perfectly honest, I've yet to receive a negative response to it. However, this does not mean that
no one will be offended. Then again, you can't please everyone.
Apparently some folks will be upset by this, but not by Gorman's Charlie uniform, which is also immediately recognizable as being derived from a USMC uniform?
I stated it before; someone prancing around in a full USMC dress blue uniform, claiming to have been a Marine... I would have serious issue with. I would also have issue with the EGA remaining on this uniform (which obviously it is not).
Simply put: This is costuming. Nothing more. It will be worn in venues where costuming is accepted, and encouraged, and where creativity is embraced.
It will be worn by people who, if approached and asked if they are "real" Marines, would (I trust) immediately explain who and what they
are portraying.
I have utmost respect for the MSgt and his service to Corps and country; his rank and retired status clearly show how much of his life he dedicated to the service... however, I must politely disagree with his assessment of this particular project.
