The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

As I tend to be more geeky when it comes to science and actually like to bring stuff to real life. I actually like to apply actual real life science to things. And it appears that science as they relate to current designs on HVAC ducting and Alien/Aliens/Isolation do not make sense.

https://ntrs.nasa.gov/api/citations/201 ... 017014.pdf

https://www.lowesairduct.com/2019/10/25 ... a%20person.

https://les.mitsubishielectric.co.uk/th ... ywood-hvac

https://www.intechopen.com/chapters/33688

Now if you really start to think about longetivity in space and fact that these ships will run for 100s of years, it would make sense to design air ducts you can crawl into and clean periodically, then yes the whole alien thing would be more possible. Cleanliness would be more important longer term as things require constant cleaning. This would also explain the reason the synthetics would be on board. No organic pieces perse, but plenty of time with no needed hypersleep to keep things running and clean as needed.

The duct research is more of a curiosity as one has to think how we would do things down the road. But mainly how I need to design things and stay true to the spirit of things and how things might end up in a few decades at this point.

I think I have a lead on how to do the Iris aperature and scale it up for my eventual stargate project as well.

I am having issues finding a good scalable iris mechanism

Hmm, 'current' science changes so rapidly that, I very much think comparing real life [now] to future design, is to compare apples and oranges; exponentially so when dealing with science fiction.
Personally I don't think there's a good reason to have ducting big enough for people. The internal volume of a space craft/station/etc, is for the most part, going to be at such a premium that massive ducting is a gross waste of space [no pun intended]. Specialised robots could/would be used for cleaning & maintenance, especially given the dust/irritants/etc.

And as cool as iris doors look, they're grossly over-engineered for 'people' doors, and only really make sense for things like ducting (possibly liquid piping too?) were you might want to regulate flow ... fans/impellers are a much simpler and easier option for this, however.

All that kill-joyously said, [not my intention, btw], it's fiction, and as such, it's not uncommon for design choices to be more about plot needs [/sh*t that looks cool], than actual practical design.

The iris design is over engineered. It is however a very low profile closure mechanism. As in it does not need more than a few extra inches in an opening to be stored when not engaged. It does have a place. Space is a premium item in interstellar craft. The mechanics are actually rather simple, but the movement, that is the genius. But I would go with an 11 leaf design so there can be a reference in the center to the Aether and point to base-12 mathematics. Gieger and Ridley were really ahead of their times with the set dressings that they went with.

I was looking at a dual purpose, have an air duct, die hard on one end, alien on the other. But more importantly designed properly it can be a compact item to transport. But I was running math and science and I will need to get with a local HVAC company and see what other options I can have as I was looking at 1/8" plate steel with l channel corners. It is all about math. The more I dig into the life like props, the more it comes back to that.

Also remember the air duct was to be a scalable design for a 23 foot stargate I want to eventually build. This little prop is to toy with the possibility to scale it up. At that point I will have to use a trailer.

I am running out of space in my truck so I have to be very careful in how I build tings to pack for load outs. I am also trying to switch over entirely to aliens/predator universe costumes only. Trying to switch to smaller more transportable items.

I hear that re "transportable items". I'm keen to create full-sized corridor and wall sections, but am very mindful of the need to collapse down [to some degree]. Still just in the pen & paper stage of design (and budget's always a factor too).

Also, no need to quote posts, if you're just replying to the one directly above :D ;)

It keeps things relevant for others trying to follow.

However, I am just looking for engineering options that work and are easy to play with.

Me thinks you underestimate others ... maybe it's a generational thing [I'm oooold].

OK, found an actual setup that is 26"
https://makezine.com/?p=525585

https://www.avidcnc.com/make-iris-skylight-p-443.html

That should adapt well to a ducted setup.

I am picking this back up to see what I can get done.

Been meaning to plug SFIA for a while now; https://www.youtube.com/@isaacarthurSFIA
I listen to his podcast, rather than the YT channel (he releases no-music / dialogue-only versions of this videos/casts too, which I prefer).

Lots of really good stuff there (his earlier years are the most interesting IMO). Semi-related to this topic, you may wish to his vids/casts called -
The Million Year Machine
Space Hygiene
Megastructure Maintenance & Space Janitors

I am looking at a local cnc outfit to cut the pieces for me.
