I see Prop Store have some screen used webbing… interesting to see it laid out… I’m presuming the hack pouch hasn’t got it’s contents… did we ever figure out what the contents actually were?

Yes I think it’s empty the majority of the time with the only pouch with contents being used / seen is when Hudson ‘runs a bypass’ on the doors to the ‘North Lock’… as someone points out on the other thread the parts would be falling out all the time otherwise…

I’ve added a photo of the contents here… just a bit of a hotch-potch of things meant to look vaguely technical for a few seconds in the film… some small screwdrivers / wrenches, a key pad, some electronic internals, some crocodile clips, some other wires, a little button and the SEIKO PULSEMETER sensors.

It would be nice to have an ‘actual list’ of what has been identified. Typically many images or links have gone from the older pages.

As an aside, I hadn’t realised that some of the webbing pieces were riveted together for strength (copper rivets can be seen) rather than stitched.

It would have been nice to have seen a closeup of the key pad / lock to the doors to the SOUTH or NORTH locks. There’s a world of lost detail in there…

That sewing had a major tension problem. I wonder what this was actually for, it doesnt say "screen matched". Of course that would be hard. But that all looks like a mess of bad sewing. I wonder if this was a practice build and possible "stunt" but never used. I have theories that I don't want to bother typing.

It’s most likely not described as ‘screen matched’ because, like you said, it’s impossible to match it to any specific detail seen on screen, but take it from me, I’ve seen a lot of this stuff over the years and none of it is as neat and perfect as some folks would replicate. It was all rough & ready, probably because it didn’t need to be neat, let’s face it all we had back then originally was VHS and the freeze-frame image quality was terrible so no one in production was to know that their film would be scrutinised in the way that we do it these days.

The provenance on all the Aliens items in that auction is extremely good. Brandon states in the Adam Savage welder video that these lots were from a crew member who had then in their possession since Aliens was made.

I’m convinced that the webbing is indeed screen used… and Harry you indicated that the provenance was good. I also agree that the stuff was simply cobbled together. It was assembled from pre-existing webbing and my suspicion is that much of it was 58 pattern 1” webbing and 44 pattern kit too… it’s been riveted and sewn. It’s nice that the stuff we have had reproduced by the likes of NOBLE and CHEF is better finished… it’s the same as the Pulse Rifle heroes which are built. Mine has a working counter and a stock that fixes in multiple positions. It’s better built than the original prop in many respects and would stand closer scrutiny. These items were not made to last forever or to stand close scrutiny.

I do a lot of sewing and I can also add that whoever sewed all this gear, including the ab pads was either in an incredible rush or was not someone whos sewn more then once or twice. I dont know about the pouches, those are a little trickier, maybe there was a pattern for those. if you examine the stitching on anything screen used, its all over the place. You can see that on the pouches there was a massive Tension problem with the machine, its where that top stitch lays across the top instead of being distinct individual stitches. it only takes a minute to fix usually.

This is definitely true of the USCM camo uniforms. Presumably they weren't made all that well because they only had to last for a few months of shooting (which, let's face it, is mostly waiting around for the shot to be lit!).

My experience, albeit it somewhat limited, has been that when it comes to costumes in "industry", textiles are either sewn extremely well, or very poorly. There never seems to be a middle ground.

Theory. The residue on the webbing is fabric glue, from velcro that was once there. fabric glue was also used for the internal closure velcro, thats why you dont see the stitching on the front. there are other explanation though.
