The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I really want to get a PR but am unsure as to what is the best route. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Here is what I am considering:

1. Solid resin PR: cheapest and can take a beating, but not as nice as the other options.

2. Airsoft PR: Still relatively cheap. A firing PR is cool, but I don't really need a PR that fires plastic BBs.

3. Matsucorp metal/resin PR: Seems to be the best quality available right now. I would be interested in any reviews of Matsuo's work. Are his PRs as nice as they seem? How durable are they? I have spoken with him via email a couple times, but my latest emails have gon unanswered. I am not sure if he is still taking orders. Perhaps he just doesn't want to do business with me. I dunno.

4. Building an All metal PR: This is the most desirable option, but also the most expensive and the least likely. At this point the parts extremely hard to find and prohibitely expensive.

5. Acquiring an SD studios PR: Very nice, but also prohibitively expensive and rarely up for sale.

Matsuo's e-mail has been playing up lately.

Try him over here:

To see what an airsoft PR is made of, have a look at my build pages here:

I would say that Matsuo's PR is your best bet.

Like you say a full metal PR is very expensive to put together and some of the parts are nigh on impossible to find now.

If your not really bothered about having an airsoft gun then the TM Thompson and G&P are probably not for you.
However, there is now a MUCH cheaper airsoft Thompson available which is almost identical to the TM version. So you can still have a Thompson with metal parts rather than just resin if you want.

Matsuo's PR's offer a good trade off. There is a metal stock, barrel vent and Triangle but obviously the Thompson, SPAS Cage and Shotgun inside are not metal. It also has moving parts which a solid resin one won't .

So I would recommend Matsuo's. he's a member here anyway so I'm sure he'll chip in with some more info on what he offers. You won't find anyone here with anything bad to say about his work anyway, so that's got to say something :)

Cheers

Darren

I forgot to mention the Hollywood Collectibles Group PR. It appears that the consensis here is that the HCG PR is going to be really expensive and of questionable quality. Is there any new info with regard to the HCG PR?

Why not do what I did?

Airsoft Thompson ( I used a Marui, but the cheapsoft ones seem OK for the price ).
Matsu styrene shroud/steel furniture/resin launcher.

( I actually originally had a G&P launcher bought as spare from Darren, who'd upgraded to a real Spas cage... Then I upgraded to a real Spas cage! LOL )

Build your own using deactivated parts, eg Thompson M1A1, Remington etc, not as expensive as you might think, as for stuff like the Spas cage a member here has them (i think) barrel vent, grenade launcher front block, shoulder stock etc etc i would highly recommend Phil S. http://props.steinschneider.com/index.html

Not as hard as you might think either.

Have a look at the m41a.com website for additional options. Much of it has to do with your own personal preference to decide on the 'best' PR replica. I've built a small number of these in the past few years and personally prefer the Tokyo Marui as a foundation.

I've had a few transactions with Matt that included, not only, PR parts but some other interesting sci/fi related pieces. Every one of them went well and his customer service is top notch.

I can't honestly comment on his completed PRs in that I haven't handled one in person. Many others seem very happy with them and they sure look nice in a photograph. TBH, I was a little apprehensive about his vac formed shrouds but, after utilizing his shrouds for another project, I became thoroughly convinced that he has a quality product there.

As for the SD PR, there is one currently available. You will see it on the main page of my site.

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

I can't rate a MatsuCorp™ PR highly enough. As a display piece and for the occasional handling it's the best value for money by far.

It's robust enough to handle fairly roughly - I'd even trust it to troop with (if I did that kind o' thing ;)) It's solidly built. :)

Damn impressive too. As you can tell, I've invested a fair amount of money setting it off in this display. I'm even just about to add blue lighting to echo that used in the film. :)

Thanks for the heads-up on Matt's email - been trying to get hold of him. :)

Thanks for all the great information everyone!

At this point, I think I am going to try to go the all metal route. I will be starting with a Tokyo Marui Thompson and going from there.

Tommin, I will probably be contacting you, Phil S., and Matsuo regarding the rest of the parts.

This may be a pipe dream, but I have been wanting an M41A pretty much since I saw Aliens and I don't think I will be happy with anything put a full metal PR.

If it's not imposing too much, I will probably be drawing greatly from the knowledge and experience of many of you here in order to bring this project to reality.

Thanks again :)

Mike I found your email sorry as mentioned before my Matsucorp email has been acting up...

If it's all metal you want the Thompson parts are hit and miss but as a rule they have been increasing in cost with every legislation geared towards restricting our access to imported gun parts.

Spas parts are tough to find but not unobtainable.

I can't recommend the SD upper receiver enough, it's the best metal option out there.
His grenade launcher barrel block is the only game in town as far as metal, so you need one of his as well

For stocks and barrel vents...SD makes the 8 hole vent and I make the 10 hole, so it's up to you which you choose.

As far as the HCG PR in the works I really don't know where the idea came from that it's going to be too expensive and inaccurate, seems to me if someone is putting up the effort and expense of a licensed run they will put a decent effort into it.

I will say this in regards to the Matsucorp gun. I will very soon stop making full PR builds and beyond that will sell off all my remaining parts and once they are gone that's it for me.
Time to move on and all that.

M

Sorry to hear you're going to be getting away from the PR, Matt. But, I definitely empathize with the need to move on. Does this mean you are also stepping away from your SG project?
