I have been to a few Con's in my time, always been good fun, but i have to say without upsetting anyone , star wars fans, always struck me as being anal over uniforms and such....

as i have always said....ITS ONLY A MOVIE...! its not real.... lighten up...

im now going to take cover as model x-wings and dropships are thrown in my direction..

we don't need to go down the path of 501...maybe if we had several thousand members then a charter and such would be ideal but not yet....

I'm in the 501st but quasi-inactive and can see both sides of this.

Part of the deal with canon emphasis is that the 501st is officially recognized by LFL and is frequently invited to represent SW characters at official LFL functions.

That's where canon becomes really important. If someone gives a costumer grief over inaccuracy while hanging out at a local comic book con, then that person is a tool.

But on the other hand, you can't have people with costumes that look like ass representing the Legion at, say, a red carpet premiere where Lucas will be attending and Entertainment Tonight cameras will be there.

Here in the USCM we are blessed by not being sanctioned.

The rivit counting aspect of the 501st and the horror stories I've heard for years really put me off them as a group... until I met some of them at Dragoncon last year. EVERY member of the 501st I met was pleasant and a genuinely nice person, and a few even put up with silly Aliens/facehuggers vs Stormtrooper pictures, even allowing themselves to be "posed." How cool is that?

Here in the Aliens costuming groups, we're less concerned with rivit counting than we are with getting people INVOLVED!

When WE have 100,000 members across 8 continents, THEN we can concern ourselves with anal costume accuracy. Or not.

INDIVIDUALS are great, put them all together and you get a bureaucracy. The members of the 501st are awesome, and a great bunch to hang with. But when it comes to rules and making new rules and then changing the rules, they drive me nuts.

When we first started putting together a list of all the Marines out there for Almayer's Folly, we divided everyone up by State, and then Country. We always wanted to make squads, but wanted it done by state, not just by groups of people making themselves squads. I'm just not sure if we have enough people, or enough events to really need squads yet.

And we also wanted to make sure we weren't as strict as the 501st (of course). But the fact is, you do need rules, and you do need regulations. Just look at what the guys in the UKCM are doing.

Happy to see that the old guard sees it my way, we don't need to split anything down the state or provincial lines... "theoretical" country unit serve very well for our current numbers, so let's not bring "big fandom" political divisions in our group, PLEASE!

There's no real need for "administrators" (save for our forum) or "officers". We have a cadre of volunteers from the well of "usual gang of idiots" who do much our dirty work (ie Tony ) and it serves us more than adequately as per the status quo.

I think that's more to do with our much stricter liability regs and such, especially as we seem to be more of a "Where there's blame, there's a claim!" compensation oriented place than a few years ago, rather than a need to regulate the UK marines.

Oh, this is soooo true!


Well, I'm French and live in Ireland, so I'm wearing a French flag instead of the Stars and Stripes or Union Jack, I choose to believe 'USCM' means 'United Systems Colonial Marines', and when I finally get it done I'll have a personalized ship patch.

Of course, the fact that I'm apparently the only Marine in Ireland helps with the "whatever I want" attitude!



Also, I second that about the pics we want to see!
