I searched and didn't find anything about groups or squads. What do you do for the different regional groups? I see the UK guys have made them selves the UKCM, do you do anything for smaller groups?

We feel silly just calling ourselves the Maryland squad.

Are there individual squads now? Did you make up patches and logos?

And on that note, would it be acceptable to put a subdued Maryland Flag on the right breast pocket?

I don't think there is anything on that pocket, and with the armor on you wouldn't see it, but it would be neat addition for hanging out in the bar

I know I probably wearing everyone's patience thin with the bajillion* posts
just getting too excited. Not sure I was this excited with my Sandtrooper set up, and I was very excited about that.

Well I think (though not too sure) you guys in the US,really just call yourselves USCM & it`s upto you if you want to regionalise yourselves.

I have noticed within the UKCM there are a few regional one`s with us too,so it happends on both sides of the pond

I guess it truely boils down to how many in your neck of the woods & moreso If you want to have that self Identity or not.

Just so I understand things right: there is no one, large Colonial Marines costuming organization with regional "chapters". People just put together their kit and, if there are enough of you within reasonable geographic proximity, you basically band together out of a common interest. Boards like this one form essentially just a "town hall" for all of us who share that same interest.

Is that about right? Please forgive my ignorance, as I do come out of the 501st mindset of the Legion-Garrison structure.

Seconding what Axe said - from what I've seen so far the USCM is a very loosely-organized community. We're not at all like the 501st If regionalizing is something you guys really want to do, I doubt anyone here is going to tell you not to.

There IS a regionally-organized charter, which you can find at www.colonialmarines.net . However, the actual running of the unit is more along the lines of forum posts saying "there's a con in this location on this date... who's coming with me!" It's more a group of like-minded costumers and Aliens Universe fanatics sharing in their obsession than a rigidly structured unit like what the 501st has turned into.

The charter is basicly it. Most people involved in the USCM fandom don't want it to turn into the 501st...no offense to them.

Plus there's simply not enough people interested in colonial marines to warrant dividing up into seperate chapters.

The 501st do what they do, and we do what we do. Colonial Marine fandom isn't owned by any one person (except Fox;) ) so if you want a chapter, no one can stop you.

HMS Hadrian's Wall. For everyone in Scotland.
HMS Nimbus. "Homers Heroes". South West England.
"Bucketheads". UKG members.
And finally, Sidewinder.. The "freebooter"... :p

Sometimes groups like 501st, Rebel Legion, ScifiHero.net, etc... We all get bogged down by rules and regs and how many pics from how many views to get accepted as Canon *and* as Formal, and if there is a slight scuff to the boot then you shan't be able to march at the big parade and the girlfriends shall giggle (and not in a good way) behind your back, and fire shall rain down from heaven, with George Lucas, Jack O'Neil, and JarJar Binks descending from down on high with swords of holy fire ready to snickersnack the heretic that dare profane the righteous fandom that they brought down from Mt Olympus to enlighten us poor geeky nerd slobs with too much free time.

In other words... "Franky Says Relax"
I see Aliens fandom as sort of the Matthew McConaughey of costuming. Laid back, really attractive to the ladies, and obviously on something most of the time.

Other that different designations for countries... (USCM, UKCM, UACM & AUCM) and "ships" (eg UAS MacDonald here in Canada), there is, as said above no other real organization.

Yes, if we were in the thousands like the 501st, it would make sense to make state or provincial chapters, but until this does, country chapters are good enough for now.

And we get more cool patches..

Now, thats one main reason I told the 501st to kiss off. They had all these different squads, outposts, etc...and they could never figure out who the "leader, contact person, Pres., treasurer, etc" was gonna be for the individual squad....around here, there got to be alot of stupidity, and I couldnt take it anymore. Arguments about who was going to do what...and even members telling others that they couldnt come to certain events.

So, like Dom said, Country charters are fine..just dont EVER let us end up like they did....I hated to see the downfall they brought upon themselves around here...and I wont stand to see it happen to this group.

Its that very reason why I cant even stomach watching SW, and even packed up ALL of my SW collection to sell. They ruined it for me..

I am a current member of the 501st and I don't take what you said personally, nor would I share it with anyone outside of this board. I'm sorry your personal experience with the 501st was one that was dysfunctional at best. A great majority of us DO have good leadership and a clear understanding of what we want to do and what we want to accomplish. I find it a little disheartening that some think that the organizational structure of the 501st is monolithic, but with a group so large, it is almost necessary, and there are bound to be some bad apples within it. I can only really speak for myself and my garrison, but we really don't have a lot to complain about.

Anyway, that isn't the point of this thread, so I will move along.

Unfortunately I've heard too many sour stories about command structure failings within the 501st.

I would dread to see any of that crap happen here. I just hope that as we continue to grow as a costuming group- that the need to organize individual groups with contact leaders doesn't become inevitable.

I think one thing we have going for us- is that the movie itself has almost fallen into "cult" status. It's almost been forgotten- so we really don't have to worry about our uniforms being "canon" in order to comply with a Fox organized charity/publicity event. (My understanding about a lot of grief within the 501st is the "canon uniforms only" issue).

Don't get me wrong- sometimes I can be a little anal myself about non canon costumes.

But it's more along the lines of not wanting to see Hello Kitty armour.

I'm pretty sure Anubian has the Hawaii State flag on his BDUs.

I think we touched on this when I was talking about starting the Charter a few years back and a lot of people were worried about it becoming 'THE USCM' and the Charter taking over - eep!

Took a while for people to know it was just a listing of marines and the USCM would carry on as normal; just a group of guys in USCM outfits having a good time.

UKCM, USCM, UACM etc - the borders are already set as they are difference countries. I think we're fine with that.

That being said, I still love to see the unit patches people come up with
