The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Recently picked up a matrix MG42 off of evike.com to use as my base for a smartgun build. I have the clutch, struts, and gear shifters. I plan of steadily updating the thread with my progress in the build.

I'll be watching this one close. I have been toying with the same plan (but am a long ways off still) so I can't wait to see the details of how you tackle it.

Good luck my friend! I bought one of these to use originally and it's a nice replica for the price. I had to abort that idea because of the steadicam I'm having prepped (this is a lot lighter than a real MG42). Still, I'm sure it'll be badass and a lot more comfortable than the abuse I'm going to be dealing with as a result of the extra weight.

Good luck with it.
I did the same approach, because the Airsoft is lighter so I didn’t need a new arm to carry a deactivated original MG 42.
Let me know if you need any help.

Do you plan to change the gearbox or will you cover up the lower end of the grip?

The unfortunate thing is that another airsoft MG42 will be coming out at some point from G&G Armament, it's just unknown when it will ever be available (and I assume it will be a lot more expensive than the Matrix version). Their grip & trigger portion underneath the gun is so easily removed from their MG42 that converting it to a smartgun would be much easier and wouldn't alter the airsoft functioning. I'm not sure if the Matrix MG42 will be as easy.

It should be possible to change the gearbox for the Matrix MG42 and have the auto fire still working.
The G&G Armament would be look & feature vice the better choice.
Some claim that the G&G is already available, but I can't confirm this or the price.

IMHO using a real MG 42 and upgrade/downgrade it to be an Airsoft would be great (if it wouldn't be for the weight).

First question of the build, does anyone have any pictures up close of the front handle you attach the gear box to?

So how did you attach the kawasaki brackets on the right side?

The left side looks fairly cut and dry with the sidewall of the vent having points that can be drilled and bolted, but what about the right side? A lot of empty space there around the barrel and nothing native to anchor the brackets against.

Did you have to fab up something or is it just mostly attached at the front and to the other bracket?

I had to fabricate the right side. Simple strips of aluminum which I then drilled the holes for the right bracket.

Finally some progress on my smartgun (though not enough for Dragoncon :( )

The headset is almost finished. Just have to add the Pentax lens and cord at the bottom. Timeslip helped me out by painting the headset and putting the headband on.

Technically it's not confirmed as a 1976 Husky brake lever (although the lever perch is confirmed) ...

I've been doing some crappy extrapolations based on the assumption that the foam motorbike grip is the standard length of 125mm.

My [and I think Adam's too] Magura lever - measuring from the centre of the lever mounting bolt to the tip of the ball - is 175mm long.
This over-hangs the end of the grip by about 40mm and so, going off the ref pics, clearly isn't right.

Faking up a pivot arc ->

the correct lever clearly ends before the foam grips rear-most ridge.

Using that idea and the the generic short lever mock-up I started with, I estimate that the correct lever is between 120mm-125mm long (as measured from the centre of mount bolt to tip of ball).

So, as to which Magura short lever is the right one, that remains to be found ...
