Here's a compact after-market GB that's available from PGC in HK:

Okay, I talked my roomate into letting me take apart his P90. The gearbox comes out quite easily, actually :) The pictures make the sizes look closer than they are. The gearbox is taller than the receiver & top cover in real life (and when the top cover is properly aligned, which it isn't in these pics).

That's not to say it isn't possible though. The trigger box (that which encloses the real trigger on the prop and is connected by linkage rod to the rear clutch lever) is actually quite large, and easily wide enough to drop the gearbox down into. The forward length of the trigger box may have to be cheated forward somewhat, but otherwise I think we're okay.

JD -- You should check the alignment of the nozzle of the gb to see if it can be align with the barrel (inner and outter).

Even if the P-90 gb won't go, I know there are gb made in HK for the M249 that will fit. It'll cost, but those who want a working AS M56 should budget for such a toy, I mean weapon.

At the AS shops in HK, I've seen take-out gear boxes (probably factory gb's that were swapped out for after-market upgrades) for sale (mostly Type 2(??) from M4's and MP5's), and were usually tagged for prices of around HK350-400 or 45-50 bucks.

Then the other way is to buy an empty P-90 gb casing which retail in HK for HK180 or so, or $22-25 bucks, and build your own maxed out gb.

I'll try to keep an eye open for one.

It's sad since my AS expert SI-FU went under (and took a bunch of my stuff with him) that I don't have a ready AS parts supplier anymore. But this is a contact that I hope to re-build or make new contact. It's a matter of time.

It does seem that using the P90 gearbox may detract from the overall accuracy of the SG... as it will probably hang down from the SG's receiver. The question I'm wondering is, would that slight aesthetic inaccuracy be enough to say - let's avoid using the P90 gearbox altogether? While the M249 gb appears to be more appropriate in terms of relative proportions to the MG42's receiver, my main conern would be the price difference when compared to the P90 gb.

However, if the M249's gb isn't to cost prohibitive... I think that would be splendid option for M56 the Smart Gun!

Question, MAA, do you have any pics of the M249's gb with motor attached? I'm wondering if the motor adds anymore vertical height to the gb, and the relative angle the motor is to the gb.

Alex,

PGC's GB cost about 200+ bucks internet advertised. If I walked in and did the thing one does with every HK retailer -- I can probably get it cheaper. Now remember that's the casing only -- no GB internals, which is good & bad. It's good because you get to customize it the way you want. For a SAW or M60/MG42 you would want a very high rate of fire. You also have plent of room in the receiver to actually drop in a skunk works R/C motor. You could go even further and change the inner barrel to an 8mm and fire 8mm BBs! On the other hand, it's bad because all this is gonna cost more. But imagine the resulting AS MG you wind up with. You would be a true Smart Gunner with such a souped up weapon.

BTW -- I don't have images but I believe the motor sets in behind the PGC GB in a straight line. You might be able to figure out where it is by looking at the Minimi.

JD -- I wouldn't give up on the P-90. For the Hong Kong Fooey type AK box conversions for M60's -- they had to shave the type 3 GB some in various places. Also, you may want to try some pre-fitting by casting the MG42 pistol assembly and get a empty shell out of that secition to see how that motor on the P-90 can be adpated into that part of the gun. (I guess this would atleast assure you can get an AS MG42, which in itself is an achievement already! :) )

The last thing about the PGC GB is that it is meant for both the Minimi and M60, i.e. it fits the M60. Now you guys can take it from there whether if this GB fits the Pig, will it fit a MG42 or M56 ? Remember that the reason why PGC came out with their own design on GB's was so that you don't have the problem of having to use pistol grips to house the motor.

Hey guys,
Looking at WGC's website:
WGC's PGC parts page

Their Version 2 box looks to come with some (all?) of the parts, for $230. Then you'd have to rig the barrel assembly, magazine, etc. I've been toying with the idea of picking up a TOP M249 for Stargate costuming and fan film use, but it'd be a while before I can afford it. It'd certainly help in figuring out how to interface the gb with the rest of the needed internals ;) Maybe I can spend some time up at a "local" (I use the term loosely) airsoft shop (Gunkulture) that a friend of mine owns if he's got an M249 in stock...

In Hong Kong, a new one un-modify will go for US 600 bucks and up!

JD -- If you get a Top and drop the PGC GB in it, I will dress up to whatever you dress up as and fly over and join you !

I have it on good authority that an M249 will be cast in resin in the not too distant future.

How much are the Top ones going for?

the upper is real steel and the furniture is original the rest is resin.

The upper will soon enough fall into silicone.
The stocks and grips are cheap enough To buy and install.

I'll be doing the same thing to an A2, and eventualy an M203.

What can I say I'm on a roll..:D

Dayum....

Oh, a friend of mine in the Trek group I'm in (& me as well) were wondering if you (or anyone) would be acquiring and "accidentally" knocking an FN2000 (if they're out yet) into a tub of silicone anytime soon? I can't remember if that's been asked already, and if it was, I can't find it..

Though you often find airsoft & resin weapons of all kinds at our place, we do NOT have a Ma Deuce laying about. I'm going to have to fix that problem one of these days ;)

you might be able to sit the internals in the magazine, if its not real buullits its not real important where it is situated, right the magazine should have enough room for them.
