Just found this when browsing around:

Looks like a copy of the Explorer Night Raider...

It doesn't look like its got a screw off cap...

And it has a blackened blade...

But at just over $13, if nothing else, it looks like a nice source of scabbard for resin casts...

Thoughts?

It had terrible reviews... But I've been looking for one in the UK... Personally knowing nothing much about knives in general, the people who do know about them (i.e the original 'Scalemead' ones) have nothing good to say about them. Saying that, they're hardly for practical use and are only for show for the kit... So I don't think that really matters...

Agreed it's a nice (cheap) way to get a sheath for a resin copy, I'am still having trouble getting a Gerber Mark ii one.

Just to let you know the night raider pictured isnt the correct model. Night raider 1's were used in the film.

Although I think Ilovethecorps made it clear he knew this wasn't the knife used in the film it certainly is worth making that clear as folks have been confused about this before. Hell, there are even resin copies of the Raider II kicking around out there.
I used the sheath of one of these cheap Raider II's for my con-safe Night Raider knife. It works perfectly!

Agreed most will want this to sheath a resin knife so weather it's bad, good or ugly and not based on the correct blade of the year i don't think matters.

You get what you pay for, and you don't get a good knife for 15 bucks. If you're looking for useful, reliable steel, this ain't it.

BUT, if you're looking for a knife to carry around on your webbing, that is a cheap option. To make it more Con friendly, particularly in more hoplophobic areas, I've seen knives with the blade cut off an inch or so from the guard, a hole drilled a hole in the middle of the blade stub, and screwed through into the scabbard. That way, it can't be removed (accidentally or intentionally), for less grief from Con security and the local constabulary.

It's certainly a cheap "close enough" alternative. Sitting in its sheath, it'd be pretty difficult to spot the difference without having exceptional knowledge of the original, and looking really close.

I do have one concern with buying them for the sheathes and using resin replica blades. I'm not entirely sure a more accurate blade would properly fit in a sheath made for this knife.



This knife lacks the protrusions on the crossguard found on the original. The sheath for the Night Raider has little notches where they sit comfortably, I can't imagine this copy would posses them, so an accurate replica may not sit right.

Definitely falls into the "close enough" category. 13 bucks can't be argued with.

I did however pick one up for 25 bucks a couple months ago on ebay. Why settle for "close enough" when you can get the real thing for a few bucks more!? It did take quite a bit of waiting though.

I couldn't photograph the sheath of mine because it's permanently attached to my grenade strap and covered in electrical tape, but the above photos clearly show the notch for the crossguard that I mentioned.

Any enclosed space on the Colonial Marine's kit is meant to hold liquior.

Call me mad but im starting to think hudson's knife was this version of a nightraider rather than a Gerber mk2. Compare these photos, the knife in the screen cap seems to have rather short, pointy "horns", just like it.
