The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Post subject: Carrying the welder...thoughts on this?
PostPosted: Wed Aug 14, 2013 4:23 am
I read a few threads about people's experience with the welder being attached via paracord or a strap + fastex buckle, and having it bang around a lot.

I was thinking this pouch may be a decent alternative? Thoughts? (I know it's not SA)

Probably the most sensible solution.

It might wobble about a bit in there but it seems ok to me...

I wouldn't worry about SA... It seems a lot of the kit placement of the cast was a bit 'Heath Robinson'... With para cord etc... I'd be looking for something a little more sturdy...

I always thought about a compartment in a hero pouch... But then it's not visible / on display...

i carry mine on a paracord loop, no issues it sits ok, i always feel that the marines have a vietnam vibe and the use of 'field expedient' methods of attachment fit in well

You're not wrong there... I've been straining my eyes at the photos in the tech manual of the chap in what appears to be Screen Used Hudson kit...

His welder is on his left hip... Although anything like detail appears to be hidden by his arms etc. I was thinking I could possibly see a D ring off 58 pattern kit hung in approximately the right place... I'm wondering if they did something with a webbing strap and a D ring...

How do you work your para cord gunny63? Any specific technique? Any pics?

I had the same problem at recent drops so I broke out the sewing machine and came up with this :

I have made it so that its almost like a issued bayonet scabbard with a high and low mounting points, I have it on a low mount at the moment. It seems to do the job nicely but I wont really know until my next drop.

Ether way no matter what, you'll always get some scratched, chips and bangs.

But, yes. A pouch will work fine. :)

I was using an M16 Mag Pouch and looping the long strap (on the left in this picture) around the neck of the welder and then clipping it nice and snug to the bag. But I've upgraded to a slightly more SA set of bags, so now I'll be starting over I guess.

I really like what Gunner2163 came up with though!

Mine is on a lanyard with a fastex quick release buckle attached to the welder via D-ring.
I've been thinking about having someone sew a small pocket on the inside of my pants right where the D-ring would be hanging on the other side. Inside the pocket I'd place a neodymium magnet, hopefully this will grab onto the ring and keep the whole thing from kicking back and forth yet leave it easily detachable.

Thanks Magnus it was really easy to make as I believe in keeping it simple, if you would like I will post some pics of it with the back which makes it very easy to see how it was made.
the only thing I am going to add is another looped piece of webbing at the bottom so I can attach a loop line from the holder to the welder so that its always attached to my person in someway or another.

Yeah, if you wouldn't mind a pic of the back, that would be nice. I'm going to make your mounting system probably this coming week.

I'll get that up for you tonight once my kids go to bed. As in the movie from what I've seen their on land yards around there necks then tucked in their webbing or swing from their belts on para cord. Look at he armour costume and paint archive at Hudson you can see what I mean in one of the images.

here is a picture of the back of my welder holder, the pen is to show off the second or high mount loop.

you can see its 1 piece of black 2" nylon which has been doubled back on itself to make the 2 belt loops. before I doubled it back on itself I stitched two 3/4" green nylon belts with male/ female clips of some of my old military gear.
so all in all it cost me nothing to make but my time.
hope that helps you out and cant wait to see your take on it.

The only change I may make is the bottom, instead of a second strap I may make a small pouch for the bottom of the welder to sit in, but it depends on what fabric I have available.

So here is what I made...I didn't have any 2" nylon webbing, so I had to scavenge parts lol. The only difference is that the bottom of mine I make a little "cup" of webbing for it, instead of the 2 fastex buckles and straps. The strap I do have on it is a combo of webbing and elastic strap, making it tight. Should work.
