The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Ribbons are not required for parade participants (or anyone else). They're just a fun little awards system we've developed around here. Some members like to wear them with their Service C or Dress uniforms, as they look nice and make the uniforms look more complete. As Data said, you can check out the ribbon thread over on the UACM board to see why they're awarded and how to get some, but not all members here bother with the system, and it is by no means required.

I think what's meant by "Parade Ribbons" is the extra wee bit that you stick to your Dragon*Con badge/pass to allow you access to the parade, not Drop Ribbons/medals... :)

Yes, a parade ribbon for your D*Con pass is required to march. They're issued at muster before the parade, as we receive them in bulk.

Second that, just read it again.

These are given out at the USCM breakfast before the parade takes place.

That's what I mean't.... the parade ribbon to be attached to the DragonCon ID pass allowing you to march in the parade. ......I pleased that we'll get that AND a campaign ribbon at breakfast prior to parade. I'll be quartered at the Sheraton 1/2 block from Hilton........look for the pair of drop ships parked on the roof.......

I was Scapey's possible +1 and I'm officially committing if it's not too late.

Also, I don't know if anyone else follows the official D*C LiveJournal, but they posted this yesterday re: Parade. I'm sure everything's set but thought I'd post it just in case it's relevant.

Quote:
Giving everyone a last call warning. While I originally set an August 15 deadline to sign up for the parade, I believe I will be closing registration within the next couple of days. There are precious few spaces left in the parade at this time. As of this post any new sign ups, either via email or our yahoo group database, will be taken 'first come, first registered' until the remaining parade slots are filled. Based on the current numbers, there will be no at-on sign ups for the parade again this year.

You can reach me directly at dc_parade (at) dragoncon.org .

Note that I cannot accept any more vehicles (cars, trucks, floats). We are at max capacity. Bicycles, unicycles, mobility scooters, motorcycles & motor scooters and the like will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you've already registered and mentioned you'll definitely have or are thinking of having a vehicle in the parade, I've counted you in my master db already. If you thought you'd have a vehicle but now know you will not - please let me know!

Also, if you have registered as an individual but are a member of a group signed up to march, please let me know ASAP. Your place in the parade should be secured through the group you are involved with and individual members of groups do not need to take any action. I don't want to double count and subsequently deny someone else the opportunity to march.

Thanks to everyone! Lots of incredible and intriguing costumes and vehicles in the parade this year - looking forward to seeing them all!

Director, Dragon*Con Parade

Color guard question... How many flags are going to be carried and how many rifle guards men are there going to be? Is there a weapon of choice for the color guard riflemen? White L85A2s? Pulse Rifles are not build for D&C.

Typically we have 6 flags. USCM, United States, English Naval Ensign, Canada, France, Japan. They are flanked by two riflemen with Pulse Rifles and Dom with his sabre.

There has been traditionally no rifles in the color guard.

And Spat, you're more than welcome to fly your flag.

My bad. For some reason I thought we did have an armed rifle guard. I should know to do a little research before I answer things.

From what I understand the standard composition of a color guard is flag bearers flanked by guards (typically with rifles), which is why I asked in the first place.

Here is the US Marine Corp Drill and Ceremony manual in case anyone is interested in know how it's done "by the book":

im not sure if its the same in the US, but in the UK a colour party will always include a few guards in smart uniform carrying rifles or drawn sabres (dating back to when it was neccesary to protect the flag)

ive never served, but was a cadet RSM so always had to organise and lead the colour parties. Trust me, with the amount of rifle drill needed to do it properly, im sure no one would want to do it :p
