The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hi guys.

As a fun little project I hope to build a 1:6 scale remote sentry gun (maybe 2 :) ) to display with my Hot Toys figures.

I have been trawling the web for the past couple of hours looking for good refence images/schematics for the USCM remote sentry guns but have found very little. I gather there si some nice information in the Technical Journal, man I need to get me a copy!

I am partuclarly intreseted in getting some dimensions on the size of these guns. Fully deployed they look to stand at least 3 to 4 feet tall but thats about all I can gauge from watching the film.

Also, can anyone recommend a good DVD player I can download which allows you to take screen grabs. Then I can get some still images from the film itself at least.

Below are a couple of pics of my work in progress Hudson figure. It still needs an accurate head and the graffiti painted onto his helmet cover as well as some subtle weathering :)

Thanks guys!

As far as I remember there's really not any sentry pics or drawings in the Tech manual. There's some concept art floating around and there's many pics taken of the surviving one from NSC last year but plans.. Not really.

Maybe time for another group project?

From Harry's site:

Seen only in the Special Edition. Practical remote-controlled unit, built around the same machine-gun as the smart-guns, the German MG-42. This item is not part of the Harry Harris collection.

And just to recap, I didn't take these photos, just saved them for my own use, and am sharing them in return. Photo rights are owned by those who took them.

And you can use the 1/6th scale smartgun from the Vasquez or Drake figures for size reference.

Wow, thanks for the great photos Russ! Terrific reference there.

This project seems alittle daunting now though, it sure is a complex piece of kit lol

I will indeed be using a smart gun for size reference but I will also be butchering one to make up some of the gun's parts, the ammo drum and barrel for example.

Thanks again guys!

Prop Store here in the UK has one that one of the guys made

VERY sweet IMHO but he wouldn't sell.

Best ref photos Russ has just posted as they are clear with a light background rather than the dark screen caps.

I'm looking to make a 1:1 scale one once I have the suitable workshop to build it in.

I believe Dragon (or one of the other 1:6 scale companies) makes an MG42, so you could butcher that rather than hacking up one of the Hot Toys smartguns.

Thanks for the great photo Jedi!

I am struggling with getting the dimensions right and your pic will help alot.

I made a card mockup yesterday just to try and figure out the basic shape and size. Im fairly happy with the shape but it is well undersize. This isnt a majr problem though as I can just scale up the panels I have already drawn up. Let me know what you think guys.

Using the Hot Toys model and the pic from Jedi as a guide, this is the sort of scale you're after:

Yep, they are from the video I took on the day (hence the low quality).

Thanks for the composition Medway, the scale in that photo looks spot on.

I am almost done making another card mockup which hopefully hits the mark size-wise. The problem Im having is that the card is alittle to thin and flimsy so it doenst hold its shape terribly well lol, but its good enough for a rough guide I guess.

Hey Tony I doubt that my end result would be worth your hard earned cash buddy. I havent built a model kit in years and have never scratchbuilt so I am not expecing too much from this project lol It should be fun though :)

Thanks for all your help guys, much appreciated.

EVA Models also makes a very accurate 1:6th scale smartgun, and is probably a bit cheaper than buying one of the HT smartgunners with the gun parted out.

Keep us updated on the sentry gun.... what are you going to make the final from? plastic card? i would have made it from small blocks of wood to give it bulk and strength... then cover it in plastic card.

Ive made another card mockup after the other one turned out to be way too small lol Its kinda hard to gauge the size comparoson in the pics but I think its close enough. The main body will sit higher for real, I just grabed some pots to give it some elevation. Its really rough looking and I was too lazy to finish off some of the detail. I wont bother mocking up the tripod as I dont have the material and it seems straight forward enough.

Still, it has everything I need in terms of reference to go ahead and attempt this little project. Thanks for the advice Model_Shop_Guy . . . its a really good idea to build the main body around a piece of wood because even with sheet styrene, I think it would be rather flimsy and wobbly otherwise lol. It will take me a while to get all the material I need so this will be on hiatus for a couple of weeks I guess. However, I am determined to see this through as I have done way too many half arsed and abandoned projects in the past lol
