Hi all

I've done a little bit of work today by dissembling my airsoft Thompson and stripping all the non-relevant parts (aside from the barrel, still need to remove that) whilst trying to keep it fully functional. It still works perfectly, so that's a good start.

I've also reinforced this set of Matsuo vac formed shrouds from the inside and given the shrouds a couple of coats of primer then silver auto paint as an undercoat. The shrouds still need fitted properly but I can't do that until I have all my metal and spas parts, which should be on there way soon.

I've also added my LED counter (static at 95 at the moment, but I might be upgrading that to a countdown sequence if I can figure out how to make that and hook it up to the trigger mechanism).

I know pulse rifles are a sixteen to the dozen round these parts, but I'm fairly happy with how it's looking so far. Lot's of work ahead, I know, but I wanted to share a work-in-progress pic:

Image

I'l post more pics as I move along, please let me know what you think so far?

Thanks

Al

Keep it up! what you have looks good so far. Are you keeping the barrel and extending it?

I'm going to remove the existing barrel and cut it down, then add a steel barrel and join it up. I think that's the plan at this stage.

Like this: http://www.rookscastle.com/tutorials/metalbarrel.html

The grip is being replaced by a Matsuo airsoft grip. Not sure it'll fit without mods though as my existing seems to be secured by 4 screws (as pictured) rather than a bottom screw. If anyone can enlighten me about that I would appreciate it.

The rest of the parts will be an HGC SPAS grenade launcher, metal retractable stock, metal barrel vent and various metal greeblies, IIRC.

I'm planning to put the air-soft battery in the stock (only place it can go really?).

The other part I'm unsure about is the 'cup' part for the backend of the shroud. On the set I have it's smooth and has no ridge at the back, whereas there should be a ridged area at the rear and the back of the Thompson should be covered -I think? I'll either have to scratch build that part or buy a part to fit.

Al

Looking good Al :)

I'm glad to see the tommy worked out good.
Does the front sight/barrel tip look removeable at all? Oh and does the rear sight come off? (hopes it does or I've got some dremeling to do!)

Yes mate I've removed the rear sight, you can't fit the shrouds unless you have it removed, it's easy enough. Just strip the gun then push the little spring loaded button at the back, with the mag removed, to pull the receiver parts apart. You can then access the screws to remove the rear sight. Beware, it comes off with quite a few tiny pieces, so have a baggie ready to save the parts if you want them.

The front barrel is also easy to remove. Just a couple of screws and a small allen key. The only reason I didn't remove it today is, I was too lazy to go look for my allen key set. It's in my toolboxes, somewhere...lol

I'm leaving the barrel on, does the actual front sight look removable?
I plan to just whack an extension piece onto it like the film used ones, plus it'll save allot more work for me :D

I'm glad to gear it comes apart like the more expensive versions, I was dreading finding out it was just screwed halves ;)

It seems to be an exact replica of the more expensive versions, all the screws and so on are the same, it works exactly the same, the only thing different is, I guess, cheaper materials.

Just had a look for you and the front sight looks either moulded on or well glued on. I can't see any obvious way of taking it off short of cutting it.

Not sure what you mean by this, but the back end of the Thompson is not covered by the shrouds or any kind of end cap. It does stick out slightly.

Great start. Looking forward to seeing the progress.

No worries Simon, anything I can do to help just let me know - any close-up pics or whatever.

Thanks DBoz, this is the part I'm talking about:

That second picture is of the HCG replica with the aluminum cast shrouds. That piece is part of the shroud itself. On the actual screen used Pulse Rifles, the shrouds were all hand made from aluminum sheet, so each one is slightly different. On those, it looks like they wrapped a piece of aluminum around the end and then tack welded it in place. There is no end cap for the shrouds, though. Pretty much all of the replicas have an aluminum band that goes around the end, if that part isn't molded into the shroud itself, like the HCG. I have never handled vac form shrouds, so I can't really comment on those.

Have a look at the various screen used PRs here:

http://alienscollection.com/props.html

and this thread discusses the shape of that rear peice:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6210

They'll hopefully show you what you're after.

Matsuo's latest resin shrouds come with a separate metal end piece as you describe, so not sure whether that bit's missing from his old vac shrouds. :)

On mine Stew (wildeone) cut out a strip from a Roses tin and bent it round, looks the part painted up :)

any chance of getting some pics of the grip when it is taken apart as the kit i have ordered has a single bolt through the bottom where as your thompson has four screws. if i get the same thompson it will help knowing in advance what sort of modifications need to be made. thanks

Not to hijack DKmax's thread of his new Snow Wolf pulsey, I thought I would share a couple of pics of mine here.

Basically, I went this route rather than continue with my build as I wanted a working ammo counter and full airsoft functionality, also I decided I could/can upgrade various parts of this snow wolf over time (the GL - going to try to install an HCG; the stock - going to install a matsuo - the triangles on the shroud and the handle...so pleanty of parts that can be upgraded. Maybe even the shrouds, I'll see. The squared off back section bothers me a little bit, but not enough to spoil my beer-can shooting fun...for now).

Anyway, here are a couple of pics of mine. All I've done so far is paint and weather the stock V brackets to cover up 'made in china' and install a strap:

Lol no worries about hijacking. It is odd your pulse had 'made in china' on it, my one has 'TD201203-0119' !? It looks rather good so will keep those when i swap my shrouds out. In the kit i have they are just plain.

Oh love the sling, i had to settle for a £5.99 viper sling which does not look very strong but i am using it mainly for show anyway

It is odd - the other OD snow wolf's I have seen have the same made in china writing on the triangle too. A serial number would be much more acceptable!

You might consider using the ones that came with your accurate shroud though, as I think the snow wolf versions are too small compared to the screen used ones, they're not wide enough. I plan to change mine.

Have you had some fun shooting beer cans yet? I can recommend eggs as excellent exploding xenomorphesque targets (as long as your wife doesn't catch you using stuff from the kitchen to 'kill') ;)

I got the sling from an ebay seller, it was really cheap - like £8 including fast shipping from the states or something - I am pleased with it. Not 100% accurate but then again neither is my pulse rifle, so it works really well.
