The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

PVB: Thanks for the link! I knew the article I read had to be off, I just wasn't sure how much.

ARRRGGGHHHH!!!! I swear I am cursed when it comes to this project. While rooting around in my garage yesterday, I bumped something that bumped something else that fell over and knocked my shrouds off of where they were perched while some JB Weld was drying and SNAP! they broke... Again!

Image

They broke along where they had broken before, so the area was already weak. Now I have to JB Weld it again. That was going to be my task for the day, but I have been called in to work, so it will have to wait.

The only other things I've gotten done are to drill and tap the receiver for the bolts holding on the new SD Studios stock and to put threaded inserts in all the places where things screw into the resin shrouds. I drilled the holes out, inserted the brass inserts and then JB Welded them in place. Next up, is to grind down where they stick up too far. No pics of this yet as there really isn't anything to see. I'll post something once I've got them cleaned up.

The new stock in place:

Unfortunately the stock will not be adjustable without taking the shrouds off, due to the layout of the holes on the new stock and the internals of the real Thompson parts combined with the aluminum receiver, there is not really any way to make it adjustable without doing some heavy mod work. I can live with it not adjusting, though.

Just got a couple of these metal plaques made up for my PR. I think they turned out very nice.

Quick question for you guys: where does the company name "Armat" originate? It is universally accepted as the maker of all Pulse Rifles, yet I don't remember seeing it in Aliens. If it is in the film, would someone point out where? I'm just glad "Weyland-Yutani" isn't credited with the PR's as they seem to make *everything* in the Aliens universe!
(I realize Armat could be a subsidiary of W-Y, and yes, the Prometheus website shows a PR-style gun having been made by Weyland).

I'm not sure where Armat came from originally, but it has kind of been adopted as the non-canon, unofficially recognized manufacturer of the pulse rifle. It has been used on many fan made items.

So, no, it was not in any of the movies. It will be interesting to see how the early PR made by Weyland on the Prometheus website changes this, if at all. One could argue that this now makes it canon that the PR was made by Weyland. Even if this were the case, however, it would not necessarily preclude other manufacturers from making the same weapon, as militaries often have equipment made by different manufacturers.

Derrick Baena is the one usually credidted for the Armat idea.

Google just enlightened me quite a bit, thanks Matt! So did his PR manual ever get printed?

Yes, the PR manual was printed. I think it was printed to order and was pretty expensive. Copies pop up for sale periodically. I picked one up a couple years ago. I paid $90 for it. I saw one for sale recently on The RPF. They are pretty cool to have if you don't mind paying the going price.

Damn, that's a little beyond my means, but I'm glad to know it's out there!
