(if you already saw this on the rpf a while back im afraid there is no 'new' progress yet. but figured I would post here where the hard core live)

I have long wanted to make my pulse, and finally got off my butt a few months back. Due to my cheap-skateness I, of course, created a lot more work for myself. The cheapo ebay resin pulse that I planned to hollow out for the shrouds was too short, too angular, and had a magazine portion that was too small (at least in my opinion). Not to mention the pockets of poorly mixed resin I kept cutting into and having goo drip all over me...

-So I started with a 'cybergun' thompson off Amazon and got to hacking up the clip (shortened it), and grinding down the handle. I used a hacksaw to cut the verticle lines in it. Def not as clean as the handle options members sell here, but I can live with it.

-I used a 16 guage steel plate, an angle grinder, a drill and a dremel to rough out my barrel vents and stock. They, too, look a little raggedy, but again, I can def live it for now.

-For the shrouds, as I said, the resin was a disaster. Even if the magazine portion wasnt too small, the grenade launcher/cage was too short. So I decided to cut the grenade launcher out +2" into the magazine area essentially lengthening the launcher, and necessitating a scratch- re-build of the magazine shroud area.
To rebuild the magazine portion, i used this trim stuff I found to rough out the shape, then bondo over. Then constant 'bondo, sand, bondo, sand' until i was happy.

-The carry handles were also too short, and too angular in my opinion. I cut them, and epoxied in a spacer to lengthen them. I then found some type of chanel (no idea what it was really for) to reinforce the carry handle. The chanel actually accomplished 3 things; 1-It provided the ridge/groove for the shroud to hug the thompson on the lower area, 2-It provided support/regidity to the hacked up frame, and 3-when I put a chanel upside down on the top handle, it created a clean line for the sight while reinforcing the top carry handle. I was pleased with that part.

Now lots of bondo to clean up the gaps and bulk up the rear pillar of the carry handle.

Also the grenade launcher was too thin. I epoxied bits of stuff to act as spacers. This sort of worked out as well. I positioned the spacers to allowe a bolt to pass through the grenade launcher into the area of the thompson barrel that I drilled out. I cut the hole in the barrel support big enough to wedge a nut into, so the grenade launcher bolts would pass right through and secure everything.

Epoxy my scratch-magazine portion to the modified carry handle. Then bondo-sand-repeat.

Cut more bits and pieces from scrap aluminum and the leftover 16 guage steel. Few bolts, screws and drilled stuff and primed the lot and painted

Disclaimers:
-Now I purposefully left off the ammo counter. I WILL add one, but I wasnt sure how intense i wanted to get with it just yet.
-Also I'm not sold on the paint. After mulling it over and seeing it every day, i have pretty much decided the Olive drab is OUT. The instant I can get my hands on some Aervoe 999 im re-painting it.
-Of course I'd love a better sling than the one that came with the thompson. Eyes are pealed.
-When I repaint, ill weather it just a tiny, tiny amount.
-If/when i pull the trigger on a real SPAS cage, I can easily remove the resin grenade launcher.

Anyways, thats it for now. Hope my hacky, short-cut riddled project isnt an embarassment to the board!

I think this is fantastic. I'm partial to the Olive Drab (having used it on mine as well), but I look forward to seeing it done over in Aervoe 999 (which I'm assming is a Bess Brown alternative?).
Great job sir!

Great job! You really had your work cut out for you with those resin parts, but it turned out great.

I'm impressed with your barrel cage from scratch in particular, it really looks the part.

Thanks for the kind words guys. It was def a pain in the butt (that may yet continue to annoy as I try to improve it!) but I am pretty happy with it. Finally fulfilled a desire ive had for 23 years (since I was 8 ).

retro: I think the OD look better in those pictures than it does here on my shelf. its not "bad" at all, i just think id like to see it in a diff color. Could always respray OD if it doesnt work out! (and yes, the Aervoe 999 "earth brown" is supposed to be a nice brown bess match. The problem is I cant find any Aervoe distributers. I can order direct from their website, but its a 1 case minimum plus shipping. Not sure I need $50 worth of spray paint... so I am just keeping my eyes and ears open for now)

Propmaniac: thanks, it def got pretty hairy at times. Like most projects, it took a LOT longer than I had hoped. Had to sneak it my time on it during slow periods at work because my 1 yr old wiped out a lot of 'build time' at home!

ob1al: I couldnt find any 1/4" (id) 'black pipe', which I read was the best thing to use because it hugs the airsoft copper barrel pretty snug. But none of the places around here sell 'black pipe' that small. So I found some basic 1/2" (od) steel tubing in the 'steel bits' section of Lowes. (Not sure what you call that section, but its a hodge podge of channel, rebar, and plate)

Updated with counter and repaint/weathering.

I needed a break from sanding and carving fiberglass (plus the only time I get time to work on my stuff is when everyone is sleeping, so no power tools...), so I finally got around to putting my Aervoe 999 to use on something a little more prominant than the helmet cam.

Also, I added the missing ammo counter (but not in a 'cool way'... -sigh- but it gets the job done).

So ammo counter. I cut a bracket from spare plastic. I made a '95' in Microsoft "paint" then tried 2 different style printed out at a 'CVS' 1 minute photo processing center (i didnt know how the scale would translate so i just put a bunch of different sizes on the 'paint' file before printing)

Then I took it all apart (and filled in gaps/hacked up areas i missed the first round with bondo) and resprayed it.

It's very much dark now. This is all I have for the moment. In the morning I plan on taking some daytime photos with better detail.

My initial impression only a half hour after re-assembly?...I like it. I think i overdid the 'weathering' as I'm not a fan of the practice in general. Hopefully tomorrow's (or Monday's?) pics will better illustrate that. But the 'brown vs. OD' debate in my opinion.....eh....uh....I like it this way. My only complaint is now I think my Pulse looks like "every other brown pulse" out there. Guess we will see what I can come up with to personalize it.

Thoughts/strong opinions on the color change?

OK, final photoshoot. Im done with this puppy for a little while. Upgraded sling is on order, so not being "truly finalized" I didnt fuss/stress with the pics too much. Final pics are just daylight circa 11am with a cell phone camera. I will say in the 'brown' vs. 'OD' debate, every single, little flaw is more noticeable in brown. Thats why I did more weathering than I planned. Figured I'd cammo my flaws and make it look not so much like a texture error in the massive amounts of bondo, but worn in via use.

Kinda makes me wish I had 2! Then I could do one in brown and one in OD...

It's always a dilemma with a PR when it comes to weathering, one part says go pristine one part says "beat it up". I personally think a Pulsey looks sooooo much better when it's beaten up and used looking. Your's looks great, if anything it should look more battered!

Nice job.

Forgive me if I missed it, but what did you use for the BB paint?

I did couple more changes that I thought really 'finished off' this project, figured I would put a bow on this post and wrap it up as well.

I replaced the solid resin grenade launcher with an HGC one I got from matsuo. (seen in this thread:http://forum.alienslegacy.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=12057)

While I had the shrouds off, I decided to tweak the paint. From about 3 feet away I used the orginal olive drab paint color to "dust" the shrouds. I basically created a mist cloud that I just let settle on top of the brown.

I am actually MUCH happier with the barely tinted darker color. Hopefully the change is visible in the updated pics.

But finally, feeling satisfied with it. Guess I just need a noble strap. .. and a lighted digital counter. ... and cleaning up some rough hardware still... OK. It will likely never be done. But its done for now!
