I did have a similar idea. I have a very thin metal foil like tape and was going to apply it to the edges of the shroud, sand it in a little then paint over it and while drying rub my finger or side of a paint brush over it to remove some paint to create a real metalic scuffed look. I was going to test it on something else before to see how well paints would bond to the stuff. May be easier to go with what you suggested.

As the weather was rubbish today i decided to go over a few parts of the spulse filling in some minor gaps etc with the epoxy resin. They did not really need doing but think it looks better now i have done them. Im hoping to get this spulse sorted for my first drop in March.

No worries DK. There's nothing wrong with Humbrol paints that's for sure. The reason I thought of Krylon is its hard wearing nature. It is popular with airsofters, as you say, but it's also used extensively on real military small arms for the same reason.

Anyway, just in case you do decide to give it a try here's a UK based airsoft dealer that it's readily available from: http://www.fire-support.co.uk/search.php?search=krylon

BurntKona, Venger. Those painting techniques sound good. I would probably just have sprayed the model in its two base colours then weathered it with a combination of paint wash & dry brushing.

All the best.

John. :)

Best way I've found to create realistic looking paint scratches is to actually scratch it using sandpaper.
Some people use torn masking tape. I even know a guy who used vaseline. There's a few different methods you can use.

The Spulse rifle is looking great! As far as painting it is concerned, I always like using dull aluminum paint first then watever color you choose over it. Then rub it off where you wanted it to look worn so it looks like metal.

I picked up a Humbrol aluminium colour spray today from Modelzone. I have also managed to put a coating of black primer over the spulse and its looking good. Im thinking about spraying the shroud tomorrow with the aluminium spray. Do you think i should spray the grenade launcher too?

IMHO, no.

The cages have a dark metallic colour, so wouldn't show through as bright metal:

Cheers for that, just the shroud then! I did actually see a humbrol spray today that pretty much matched the colour of those cages. I may get it and try it out.

Looks awesome! If I wasnt so anal about having moving parts and stuff made out of metal Id certanly go for one of these. I have to wonder what spat molded his pulse from. Was it a screen used pulse or one from an independant builder?

You sound like my bf lol
One of the reasons I'm following this thread and others similar,I'm a novice but want to surprise my bf later in the year for his birthday,I've seen a few of his mates being built but there not helpful and tbt I didn't take much interest back then.
I like the look of this one and the step by step instructions are ace.
The only thing that concerns me is the lack of moving parts and stuff made out of metal?
Decisions, decisions,do I buy one with moving parts or like the one above, what are the pros and cons?
DK it's looking awesome, was there a reason you chose this particular one, rather than one with moving parts?

Helen

Hi Helen

Its just a matter of personal choice for me. My project is taking me forever but thats because I wanted to see if I could do it myself. I like the details of moving parts and that in itself presents problems and soultions that I have to figure out.
Ive seen lots of buidups of Spulse Rifles and each looks fantastic. They are very detailed and once painted you cant tell the difference. To the creator of this thread sorry for hijacking it!

Joe

no worries :D

Have been busy this weekend spraying etc. I decided to change the shroud colour i was going to use. Instead of the olive green i had, i decided to go with tamiya olive drab 2. Its a slightly lighter version which gives a slight hint of brown in it....i could be wrong lol but i actually really like the colour. The Humbrol sprays are not bad to work with but god those tamiya sprays are horrible. Even with a facemask on and doors to outside fully open with air blowing through i could smell and taste the paint. Awful stuff! Just had to remember short controlled bursts

Anyhow, i have applied the aluminium and hours later applied the olive drab 2. Pics below do not do it justice, i'm very happy with how its turned out. Im leaving it to dry over night then may do some weathering on the shroud or may spray the other parts and leave detailing to last.

That's so awesome now, cool colour, some are too light for my liking but that's spot on.Is it drying ok,or is it streaky,do you have to go over it much?

@ Helen, the pr prices varies a lot. In my experience i have seen a kit as cheap as £115 (white resin recast) and as expensive costing just over £900 (forbidden planet a while ago, although, i think its near £830 now). Thats why the spulse attracted me. It was at the cheaper end while looking the business.

My spulse is looking good after being sprayed. It has applied evenly leaving no streaks, run-offs and no pooling. You can waste a lot of paint but i find it best when spraying to not hold the spray too close and start the spray before the area needing spraying and finishing just past it. Its worked a treat

Hiya, yeah Halfords have a good range and I actually did consider using them. I was a little uncertain how well they would apply so decided to go with the Humbrol sprays. the krylon (sp?) Sprays look good so if I do get around to getting the M41K spulse kit i may try the halfords and krylon paints on it.

I've painted a few things in my time, so I'll add my 0.2 cents. 1 can of 'green' is plenty to do the shroud and 1 can of black is plenty to do the rest. If you put an undercoat of silver, that'll easily cover the whole thing.
You could do 5+ coats of paint of each colour and still have enough left over to do another 2 or 3 guns.

Very true, I once ordered resident evil 4 for the GC and it came with a promotional res evil umbrella. Lets just say when handed over by parcelfarce it came with something more resembling a boomerang :x
