The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hi all

Don't know if anyone else has seen these on Ebay recently but I got one in the post this morning.

It's a Pulse Rifle counter unit with LED output. It comes with one output but apparently more can be added if wanted.

Ebay PR counter

this is the one that I won and not a live auction anymore.

Just thought I'd say that I tested mine out and it works great. There are two contacts, when both are open the counter displays 00 and then when the "loaded" pair are in contact it switches to 99 and then quickly counts down to 95. When the second "trigger" pair are in contact it counts down quite rapidly to 00 again where it remains until the first pair are broken and then remade.

Apparently there will be a sound board coming out later which can be used in synch with the counter unit. The cool part being that it will use an SD card and you can load your own sounds onto the card.

Anyway, if anyone is looking for a good functional counter then this is one that I would recommend.

Cheers

Darren

Looks good, and a similar price to the hyperdyne counter. Looks more compact, though. If the sound board comes through as a similar build and price, I'll think about nabbing one for myself for when I get a new PR.

Does the barrel LED flicker like the Hyperdyne unit?

That's cheaper than Hyperdyne's counter Isn't it? Looks nice and compact!

I got one of their cheap 'static' light up counters a couple of months back to go in my nasty resin PR.

Great item, great price, friendly service, no problems shipping from Australia.

Like the look of that one!

Cheers,

Andy.

I wonder if he did the same to Hyperdyne. That counter sounds an awful lot like Hyperdyne's feature list.

Sorry to hear that Rich. He did mention in an email to me regarding the forthcoming sound card something about "the guys who he got to design this for him" so I dont know how much of this is his original work (or at least commissioned by him) and how much may have been ripped off from elsewhere.

I guess that most PR counters will work in a similar way though at the end of day. Certainly the sound card he is developing is unlike any other design I have seen or heard of.

Actually, I think the price (including 1 LED) is the same as Hyperdyne's kit. It is a nice compact board though and I especially like the mounting provided with the two hex head screws.

Hmmm... interesting.

I saw that pulse rifle counter on eBay too. However, since I'm currently in the final prototype stages of mine, I was only curious and had no interest in purchasing one. Unfortunately it's taking longer for mine to come to market because I'm being selfish and having it built to my specs and to my liking by a good friend of mine. If anyone's interested, I can post the specs and a few pics of what I'm doing. I'm sure the diehard 'Aliens' purists will probably curse me, but real-world gun guys will probably praise me for my subtle changes. ;)

It's actually PR counter specs, so I wouldn't classify that as a hijack at all. ;)

So here's the deal.

My M41-A Pulse Rifle build uses the Japanese Tokyo Marui M41-A Conversion kit as a base, but I completely scrapped the counter because I did not like the way it functioned:

- Counter Powered On with Ammo Mag Inserted..... Counter reads "99" counting down quickly to "95".

- Counter Powered On without Ammo Mag Loaded..... Counter reads "00".

- Trigger engaged and firing..... Counter counts down -- eventually to "00", but only if BB's are passing through the light gate at the end of the barrel. Counter does not count down if no BB's are being fired.

- Clip Removed..... Counter reads "00".

<span style="font-size:medium;]Now then, my current PROTOTYPE version does this:

- Counter Powered On without Ammo Mag Loaded..... Nothing.

- Counter Powered On with Ammo Mag Inserted..... Counter lights up, reads "00" and counts up (not down) to "95" rapidly. Not movie accurate, but in my opinion cooler because it appears to be checking the number of rounds in the ammo mag in a more appropriate and visually pleasing manner. Unfortunately the frame-rate on my camera is too slow so it was unable to pick up the smooth rapid loading count -- but the slower firing countdown appears just fine.

PR_Counter_Prototype_Countdown.mpg (6.3 MB - Sorry it's so large :o )

(*My Pulse Rifle is only partially assembled due to testing the counter, so I wasn't able to show myself slapping the ammo mag in, but it works exactly as described. :D )

- Trigger engaged and firing..... Counter counts down -- eventually to "00", whether BB's are passing through the light gate at the end of the barrel or not. I removed my light gate all together.

- Clip Removed..... Counter turns off, no "00" displayed which in my opinion should only occur when the counter is reading an empty ammo mag.

I'd like to build in options for adding sounds, but that's not currently within the scope of this project.

Oh yeah... we had toyed around with other LED colors, like blue and green -- the blue was pretty freakin' awesome! But in the end I felt it was best to stick with the standard red LEDs.

Also, we had also been messing around with the brightness, and are still kicking the idea around of having an accessible dipswitch that can adjust between bright, medium, and low light conditions. I just thought this would be a cool feature to have -- among a couple other ones that had come up. ;)

Thanks Dom! :)

Although most of the credit needs to go to my friend Paul -- he was the real genius behind the magic.

Thanks for offering to help me out with the silly shotgun shell... but that whole plastic SPAS apparatus is getting junked. Gotta make way for my real steel Remington 870 and real SPAS cage. ;)

I need to reply to this. You guys have to remember there's only SO many ways a person can wire up two LED counters, to have the functions you want in a PR counter. Same with adding barrel LEDs and possible sound. We have other lads that make FX boards besides Hyperdyne. One of which is a member here and he's been making his boards for lasertag use for years now.

So, you can add extra features and whatnot pretty easily if you have the knowledge. But getting back to the original statement, unless you can lay the two boards side by side and match up tracings, I'd not jump to any conclusions. :)

@Rick: Interesting variant on the "normal" design. very cool.

Yeah Ive been making electronic boards with counters, muzzle flashes and sound for years now. I just dont sell alot of them as they prop useage was incidental to the original purpose of their design.

Also on the sounds on sd card issue. Well its the first Ive seen for PR use but not for other prop use. There is a certain designer in france who's sabre electronics uses the same technique to store and play back interactive sabre sounds. So cool but not original.

Id also say that looking at the pics of the board and how its constructed that its not a rip off of anyone elses work. You give a list of specifictions to a electronics design firm and they will come up with the goods. When the same specs are used due to the nature of its a prop being replicated then is it any surprise that they perform similarly or even identically.
