The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Buying the G&P kit shouldn't be a problem.
The kicker is the Thompson - You will need one of the VCRA exemptions to buy one, unless you don't mind 51% of it being painted a bright colour.

You mean UKARA right?

You'll HAVE to get a two-tone or clear version in that case. The g&p kit does not need UKARA reg to buy though.

Here's a store with both (thompson out of stock though):

Did see them. The 50% won't be an issue at all but wondered if that would still count one the pr os built does it still need 50% bright color?

I personally would just whack one of those red plugs in the end if I went to a con or anything.
Walking around Morrisons with it is a different matter though!

The law states that a Realistic Imitation Firearm (RIF) is one that a member of the public cannot easily distinguish from a real firearm.

In my opinion, fully built Pulse Rifles that are black and olive green (olive drab, or even Brown Bess if you prefer) look similar enough to modern military firearms that they are easily mistaken. They won't know it's not real unless they've seen Aliens and indeed, we have been at shows where people thought we were real soldiers with all the latest weapons and body armour.

Now that's kudos to Mr. Cameron for such great designs, but bad for us if it's not clear we're just a sci-fi costume group... especially if young Master Plod* hasn't seen the film either.

So, in my (not so) humble opinion, either you need an excemption (Airsofter, re-enactor, theatrical bod) or your weapon must have 51% of it's surface painted up like a Hello Kitty product.
Otherwise, you'd be breaking the law.

Now, Sidewinder and I will argue this bit until the cows come home...
In my opinion, adding bits onto a 'Hello Kitty' Thompson would hide some of the 51% that is painted. Whilst the law does not actually state this, you're basically disguising the fact that it's a replica and essentially is the same as painting the whole thing black.
If you have enough of the Hello Kitty showing, I doubt anyone would take issue, but a bored Master Plod might... People have been arrested for far less.

End of the day, it's your choice.

*Used to be 'Old Mr. Plod', but cops are getting so much younger these days!!

Well we are looking at joining airsoft in future as we found one close and my nephew already shoots at a range and is look at if his licence covers airsoft as he can carry firearms and colectors just has to declare them onto his licence.

I don't believe an FAC or Shotgun licence actually covers RIFs.
It's weird, kinda like how you need a licence for a real gun and VCRA excemption for RIFs, but can buy a de-activated firearm without any of it.

Yeah its very strange how easy it is to get what is essentially a real firearm, but an airsoft gun needs all this paper work.

Red plugs mean nothing in the UK.
Manufacturing any Realistic Imitation Firearm that could "Be reasonably mistaken for a genuine firearm" without a VCRA defence is illegal, just as is selling one premade to someone without said exemption.

There is some debate about the RIF status of a Pulse Rifle - I would say that since, although it isn't based on a real-life firearm per se, it still looks real ( Deliberately so by the film-makers ) and it would take someone with some knowledge of firearms and / or sci fi movies to tell that it's imitating a fictional weapon, a pulse rifle WOULD be classed as a RIF and should be treated as such when being sold or built.

If your end-result Pulse Rifle still had 50% of the visible structure painted day-glo green/orange/blue - No problem.

Also, it doesn't matter if you're a hunter, squaddie or Olympic marksman - NO real-firearm licence covers you to buy/build a RIF.
Ironic? Yes. Stupid? Hell yes... but you can legally carry a genuine assault rifle and still break the law by painting a 2-tone black if you have no VCRA defence.

However, unless I am mistaken there is nothing illegal about someone over 18(?) actually owning a RIF (in this case a black and Brown Bess Pulse Rifle).

Owning is fine.
It's selling to, or manufacturing, that's illegal.

However, someone with VCRA can gift it to someone without, right?

Technically correct, but as Woody says - It'd more dodgy than a band turning up at a funfair in a Viper, and playing "Stayin' Out For The Summer" on the bumper cars!

Gents,

Im new to the board, so forgive me if im stepping on any toes, but thought I could share some knowledge on the Airsoft front.
The Violent Crime Reduction Act (VCRA) which came in in 2009 caused alot of problem for airsofters, so there are MANY site that summarise the rules on this.

It looks like most points are covered, but I will also re-enforce the point that if you are over 18, and are not a registered player, "gifting" a RIF is very dodgy territory.
Also, if you order a 2-tone IF from an airsoft retailer, and paint or similar at the same time, to hide the 51%+ "Brightly coloured" part of the gun, they will promptly cancel your order without UKARA registration.

Additionally, with the mention of Tesco/Morrisons, it is not just the VCRA that should be considered, but under Firearm laws, and the Public Order act, and you should be very careful how you carry such "hardware" around.
If you are not within the confines of a convention, and were considered by ANY member of the public to be causing them "Harassment Alarm or Distress" you are VERY like to be approached by a police officer, and it would be kind that carrys guns and DO understand this are of law.

Once you are in posession of your pulse rifle, it really just needs a common sense approach.
The "general public" are pretty nieve to firearms, and film prop guns, and cant be expected to know the difference.

Does that help at all?
