The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Awesome guide!

Is there a rough guide on expenses?
Forget hotel room, flight, immigration. That's all accounted for.

Food, drink and tips... whats the average total expenditure.
I'd like to know how much to load onto my pre-pay-card and then some.

Also, I take it all outlets accept cards?

Maybe some US peeps can comment here, but I only ever used cash $.

Waving a card around a bar at two in the morning whilst drunk is probably not the best idea.
If you forget/lose it/have it stolen, that's all your money gone at once.
Each room has a safe. Keep your money in there and just carry around enough for that time/day/event.

I think I went through about $300 last time and I didn't drink that much or buy anything particularly expensive.

Regarding soft drinks, I found that at busy times and/or late at night, I sometimes wasn't charged for Coke (still left a $1 tip) but the bar staff didn't exactly rush to serve me, so bear that in mind if you're not gonna drink alcohol at all. :)

Yup, so anything between mine and yours would be an average spend.

I still took my credit card (only carry it when going to use it though), so travel advice regarding money still applies here;

Sandy, depending on where you eat & drink will depend on how much money you'll need. If you don't indulge in alcoholic drinks, then that saves you a TON of money. However, everywhere in a 3 mile radius increases their prices during Dragon*Con.

The food court is going to be the most reasonable place to eat, so if you figure $20 per meal, $60 per day and toss in an extra $100, you'll be just fine. That will also account for times where you eat somewhere a little more upscale, because your general food court meal is going to be around $10.

Nine times out of ten, everyone takes cards in the US...however, some places have a $5 minimum charge.

On the subject of CASH. Cash is always best and I find, is a better way to keep track of what I'm spending. Like Steve said, there is a safe in every room and storing the bulk of your spending $$ is always a great idea!

But if you want to penny pinch, all the local restaurants have their menus and prices online. Call the local bars and ask how much half a coke is and what the average tip would be. Then fill out your excel spreadsheet titled "Projected DragonCon Expenses".

It's not about penny pinching, but bringing enough cash without bringing too much! I don't want to flash too much cash about!

Things cost approximately the same as in a decent downtown hotel in a city in the UK.*

* - actually, it's somewhat cheaper. But if you work to that idea then you'll have money left over to spend using your prepay card when you get home.

Well then Sandy, follow the advice about contacting the hotels and local restaurants and do the homework.

EDIT: Sandy, on a number of threads, people have given you estimates. Seeing as your still asking, your either A not liking what your hearing so asking the question again and again until you get an answer you do like, or B You want to get the figure to the penny. So, either way, do the homework yourself if your not going to listen to us.

Oops, will go sifting then. MY bad.
And what's with the attitude? You're sounding pretty condescending and it's uncalled for.

Edit: Found threads. 2010. My apologies for not remembering threads from a year ago. I've had a lot on my mind and plenty to deal with this year.

Will really miss you not being there this time. :(

My D*Cons all go on the credit card; I get my cash $ on credit card (you pay extra for this), but that's just how I roll. 8)

If you didn't want the hassle/extra expense, a lot of banks will give small loans (with more reasonable APR) for "your holiday of a lifetime!" :)

The most economical eating you'll find is in the food court. There are a number of fast food type places there so you won't have to eat the same thing all the time. Compared to the hotel restaurants, they are dirt cheap. Figure you will pay ~$6 for a breakfast, ~$9 for a lunch meal. Dinner is an iffy thing because the food court doesn't stay open for very long after 8PM. Late night meals are hard to come by other than bar food and nights at D*C are long.

The heat, I suppose, will be a shock unless you've been exposed to something similar but it's the humidity that just saps the life out of you. Thank goodness the three main hotels are connected by sky bridges now and, along with the habitrail to the food court, theoretically you could enjoy the convention without ever leaving the comfort of air conditioning... after you stand in line out for registration, that is. I carry a canteen full of water whenever I am in my CM gear.

Despite all of the warnings and tips, D*C is what you make of it. It could be the most fun you will ever have with clothes on or you could have a terrible time. Be prepared to stand in lines, navigate through dense crowds and to be groped by furries. Maybe that last one was just me. *shrug*

Just over 8 hours.

With meals, various films to watch and trying to drink the plane dry of JD, it'll fly by. :)

You could always have your own media player and headphones to zone out/snooze for a bit too.
