I would definately go with the Mk23 SOCOM and LAM for the guard. Redwolf airsoft has a functional LAM (M-97) with working laser and flashlight for the SOCOM. I have one and it works great. The light's really bright too. Also, the Tokyo Marui Gas NBB SOCOM set comes with the phase two version (phase one, real steel speaking), which is more futuristic and it comes with a LAM replica (LED imitation laser and dull light, even in the dark). Unfortunately the M97 LAM and TM NBB set are both close to a hundred bucks, but well worth the money.
I have the TM springer (high grade not hop-up), TM Gas NBB, and KSC GBB heavy weight hardkick versions of the MK23 SOCOM, and the M97 LAM. So if you have any questions about any of these, feel free to ask me about them.
The SOCOM is about 2-3 times as big as a USP. When you hold both of them in your hands, and examine them thourghly, you'll notice that they are quite different, in size and looks (and with the real thing, calibur. USP .44 Mk23 .45). Both are quite futuristic.
Some other futuristic pistols are the Walther P99 or Sig Sauer and Sig Pro series pistols.
or you could just wait for that VP-70 to come out.....
