The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I saw a film last night called Soldier.

The screen writer was David Peoples, the screenwriter behind Blade runner, i was surprised to learn the film takes place around the same time and in the same universe as Blade Runner. With references to the Tannhauser Gate and Shoulder of Orion conflicts. The whole film had a Alien 3 esque feel about it.

Although the film wasnt a remote patch on Scotts masterpiece it kind of gives an extra dimension as to the idea of creating the 'Roy Batty' super soldier replicants.

An excellent film IMHO! I think Sergeant Todd is the nearest Big Screen embodiement of Rogue Trooper there has yet been and I have a 1/6th Todd in the works! Also occured to me it would be a fairly easy costume to assemble in 1:1! :D

You forgot Jason Scott Lee as arch baddie Caine 607! Although whether he is a "great actor" is open to debate I suppose! ;)

Don't forget either that the Soldiers' space suits shown in the beginning are re-used on Firefly.

AvP didn't suck nearly half as much as Avatar... so I don't see what the big deal is.

And it shows.

Soldier had sooooo much potential- and Russel did a great job with such a limited character (I think he had less lines than Schwarzenegger in The Terminator).

I own this on dvd- But I have a serious love/hate thing for this film- the first twenty minutes or so are all kinds of awesome. Then he finds the villiage on the refuse planet and things just roll at a snail's pace from there... up until the showdown/climax of the film.

The firepower was fantastic, and the interesting camo the team wears (especially the winter camo for the Moscow Incident). And I loved all the little nods to other sci-fi films including Star Trek II and Aliens (did you catch them? )

Unfortunately with the huge slowdown in the second act I give it a 7/10.

Yea I liked it pretty well. Just makes me wish it got a bigger budget and maybe took itself a tad more serious.

That website is pretty cool, but they missed a movie listing for the Barrett m82 close quarters gun. "The Taking of Beverly Hills" used one in the ealry 90s. The badguy was hip firing it. You can see it at Minute 5:41 of this clip. They need better sound effects for the gun shot though.

SOLDIER was Great.
The tie in with BLADE RUNNER is sweet & I like how the same universe but a different story is done. Wish others would do films like that, could be one major BOXED set if you think about it.

Jason Scott Lee is a very good actor, I think he`s take on Bruce Lee was top notch stuff, something i think a Lot would have screwed up but he did the role a lot of justice (harder to play a real person in a Bio film I think).

The website is pretty crap on that basis, IMO.
There are a LOT of missing listings, particularly ones where there are long, lingering shots of common weapons in high-profile films.

IIRC IMFDB is a Wiki style reference site, so instead of spending time here or elsewhere typing critcisms people can actually spend the same time typing additions or amendments and make it better!

Just a thought! ;)

I did think about it, but I don't have the time (or the bandwidth) to go through all my DVDs and upload everything.

It's just nowhere near as comprehensive as touted.

But back to Soldier.
I saw it, loved it, bought the DVD.

I think it works great as a kid's film, but it feels a bit one-dimensional for anything beyond the usual 'switch off and enjoy' stuff.

According to Blade Runner wiki, they were going to do a full battle sequence of the Tannhauser Gate but due to bugetary reasons it never got filmed. ;)

If you watch the trailer for Soldier- there is a space battle sequence above a planet (that lasts few seconds at best) that is not in the film itself.

It has been suggested that this was a glimpse of the missing Battle of Tannhauser Gate.

Thanks MA!

Yeah it's that tiny snip between the close up of the skull's eyesocket- and the profile of Todd's face.
