It's cool but I'd have used a real Thompson even if it meant going semi auto due to cost prohibiting factors ($20,000 or so for a full auto) and made it as accurate a replica as possible. Nevertheless it's cool as hell and he achieved his goal of a full auto pulse rifle replica and he deserves props for that.

That's awesome, plain and simple. I want to take it apart. You think that's a resin shroud? Seems unlikely...I know someone on the RPF CNC machined a set some months or years back.

Also, just noticed that the shroud is extended to fit a larger clip. Counting the rounds, he went through more than the 20 rounds that usually go into PR magazines.

He's using a 50 round 'coffin' mag. it's a mag that has four columns of rounds instead of two.

I'm guessing the oversized magwell is there to give room for the mag and the electronics they had to squeeze in there.

I personally would like to get a peek at his shotgun to SMG interface, that has to be strong as hell to hold up to 12 gauge live fire.

Awesome video! I have to say this is the first time I've seen a modern-day reproduction of the live-fire Pulse rifle with actual working shotgun "grenade launcher". Very, very cool!

Same here. The common ways us 'prop' folk use to mount the shotgun would not last long at all using live 12 GA ammo. I'm thinking of something designed similar to Tom Gray's aluminum block designed to attach the SPAS 12 cage to an airsoft Thompson, but modified to fit a real tapered barrel, given a lower extension in the back fitted to hold the back of the shotgun receiver in place, and a full slab of metal between the top of the shotgun and the inside of the top of the SPAS 12 cage so that everything bolts together solid.

Also, because of the shortened shotgun barrel length (less than 18") am I assuming correctly that the owner of this gun (if not an FFL dealer or manufacturer) would be required to file two (2) $200 Federal Excise Tax permits... one for the full-auto Thompson M1A1 and one for the sawed-off Remington 870?

Might be wrong here but I think the shotgun falls under AOW class which is only a $5 stamp, instead of the full class III which is 200.

Yeah, I was kind of thinking that as well -- but then there's that sort of grey area regarding the buttstock. In order for this short-barrelled shotgun to be considered an AOW Class, it may not have a rifled slug barrel nor a buttstock. Having a rifled barrel would move it into the DD Class (Destuctive Device), and having a buttstock would move it into the SBS Class (Short Barrel Shotgun), both of which require the $200 tax stamp.

Although use of a rifled barrel would be more realistic if you were actually firing grenades, most Remington 870's available back then including those used in the films were smooth bore -- so as long as you used one of those to cut down for a pulse rifle grenade launcher it could not be considered a DD.

However, since the Thompson M1A1 / pulse rifle itself has a buttstock, and the Remington 870 is now attached to this rifle with a buttstock, does that mean the Remington 870 now sports a buttstock by association?

I know that what is being attempted here is not standard weapon modification practice, and this would probably be a question better asked of the ATFE themselves. Regardless, I think this is a perfectly responsible question to discuss -- especially since some of us are legally abiding gun owners, some of which might be interested in the idea of such a build. ;)

Very good points. I have a feeling that to get the most accurate answer one is going to have to find a good lawyer specializing in firearms.
I say this because asking the ATF is like asking a 3rd grader now one knows the answer but they will all tell you what they believe it is, you will end up with as many answers as people you ask.

I hear this all the time from my gun buddies -- both dealers and manufacturers. Believe me, I've already gone down the path of discussing the build of a live-fire pulse rifle with most of them. Unfortunately because this is sort of sketchy territory, they did not have any definitive answers either.

The funny thing is that our discussions first started out to try and build a fully legal demilled version using all real gun parts. In the end, everyone was telling me that it would probably be easier (and less paperwork) to just build one for real -- as long as I paid for the tax stamps.

Ironic, huh?

Those of you that are Science Fiction Movie buffs will recognize this weapon as the M-41A Pulse Rifle from the movie Aliens. The movie prop was only designed to fire blanks from the .45 ACP Thompson Submachinegun (20 rounds) and Remington 870 Shotgun. The prop did not have to survive the recoil form real 12 gauge rounds being fired.

The MAX-41A is a combination submachinegun in 9mm and short barreled 12 gauge shotgun designed to resemble the M-41A Pulse Rifle from the movie Aliens.

Submachinegun component is a NFA registered SWD M-11/9 with an Anthony Smith style Suomi upper receiver. Magazine used is a Suomi "Coffin" magazine that holds 50 rounds of 9mm. Shotgun component is a NFA registered Remington 870 short barreled shotgun and holds two rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber.

BATFE letter was obtained confirming this is a legal configuration, prior to manufacturing.

The MAX-41A is a prototype that is currently being tested. My main concern is durability when fired with 12 guage buckshot and slugs. So far, most testing has been with light birdshot loads. The subgun component has run flawlessly.

The bullet counter has a minor problem when firing in full auto, only counts half of the rounds fired. When firing singles, there is no problem. The manufacturer believes a simple reprogramming will fix it, so the counter has been shipped back.

The test phase is expected to take about a year. The only roadblock I see is getting a reliable source for a quantity of Suomi Coffin Mag's.
