Well, time for the follow up.
I finally finished the Alien and Predator campaigns.
Overall, this game was fun. It grows on you, and I found I enjoyed it more just playing a piece at a time instead of just marathoning through it. I have gone back to several levels just to check things out again. The little scripted events can be pretty neat. Not complicated like Half Life or anything, but neat and creative, and above all, contributing to the story. The graphics were decent, the sounds and music different. Yeah, there were some differences between the movies and this, but all in all, its pretty minor. Here are some things that stood out.
Aliens are mean. No really, mean. It was fun being an alien, and harvesting people. Odd how they all looked like the same old middle age guy fighting baldness, but hey, space is strange, right? I liked the animations for the "stealth kills." The reach of the claw swipe seemed a little short at times. The absolute worst though was the dizzying auto transition. I think that AvP2 had a better interface for the alien. I remember feeling a LOT less frustrated and motion sick playing that game compared to this one.
Predators are mean too. I don't ever remember once feeling any fear as a predator - I was just a one-creature killing machine. I ripped off heads and eviscerated prey until the cows came home. I loved those trophy kill animations! I think the Predator in this game was more entertaining to play than he was in the other two games. I actually felt like I was hunting, and not just wading through enemies with ungodly powerful weapons and armor. I liked the backstory/background in the Predator campaign, it felt really emersive.
And the Marine ... well, life is hard as a Marine. The "rookie" deal aside, and some other little glitches, I had a great time. The guns and armor grew on me. If I could change ONE thing right of, it would be the sound of the Smartgun. Making that movie style would have been perfect ... oh well. The only real bad part to the Marine, and its a gamewide problem is ... they are morons. To say they are just incredibly stupid is an understatement, and calling them retarded is an insult to retarded people galaxywide. Those idiots can't hit the broadside of a barn, or see much further than ten feet. Their AI is TERRIBLE. It makes you want to cry sometimes. Hunting them as a Predator was far easier than it should have been at times because they have no idea about combat, other than randomly spraying, or just standing around oblivious. As an Alien, you could sneak up, right in front of them in semi-dark and never be seen. For being the premier fighting force of the future, they acted pretty lousy - especially since they KNOW about aliens now ... Best I can tell, nearly an entire company dropped on the planet between the dropships an EEV pod, and they were wiped out almost completely within hours! A single section made it longer in the movie ... In a nutshell, bad AI pretty much doomed them. They had the hardware to mop the floor with the other species.
So, after playing the whole game, I think I could give it an 8.5/10. It had some great moments, offset by some annoying glitches/AI. It does seem as if Sega's timetable was the real culprit here. I won't go into Multiplayer, because I don't mess with it much. No DLC, and I won't pay for something that should have been in the original release. The MP maps are pretty repetitive, and there are only two CoOp maps.
So, if you are on the fence, and don't have the cash to roll the dice ... wait until it drops in price, which I imagine will be a short time out. If you have the cash, and you feel adventurous, go for it. You'll probably have a lot of fun. I did!
