Dude, you are a legend, thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

Can't say as I have seen that part you mentioned above but it may well be there, the kit is partially assembled and I havent taken the hex-keys to it yet because... well... I havent got any! (Although a cheap set are on their way to me right this very moment)

Thanks for the tips, tirck and advice and one I get going I'll start a build progress thread so everyone can pick it to pieces.

I never did ask the guy I bought it from how he got it into the UK, they are super strict with it comes to replicas (even sci-fi-ed ones!) But his loss is my gain and I'm really REALLY pleased with it, I hope I can do it justice!

Thanks again!

So at the end of another frustratingly slow weekend I still haven't received my imperial hex keys but I did take a closer look at the kit.

That little part Matsu posted a photo of if definitely NOT in there or in the box of parts, but having looked at the construction of the shrouds I can see that they actually cover "barrel support" so I'd probably have to trim the shrouds back to fit that part anyway. Another thign I noticed was that the "T" shaped slot for the "barrel support" on the Thompson appears to be full of flash or not completely moulded so either that will need dremmelling out or I'll have to come up with something else, but it doesn't look too complicated! Thanks again for the photos, it's been a big help and that little part doesn't look over complicated so I guess I could knock something up to achieve the same effect.

I've decided to have a go at making my own ammo counter (that reads "76" rather than "95") which doesn't look too complicated... I think it's going to be more of a challenge to work out where to put the batteries and the power switch than anything else. Once I get the kit broken down in to parts I'll have a better idea of the available spaces inside. This is the counter I'm going to use! Now I just need to figure out what batteries to use, and which pins to solder!

My 20 round Ammo Mag arrived today, it's filthy and oily and needs a good scrub in nice hot soapy water. Got a funny look off my boss too when I opened the packet (had it delivered to work) and pulled out weapon parts! Ha!

NOOOOOOO!!!!!

Take it apart and wipe some of the oil off with a rag, by all means.
But leave a light coating on, at least on the inside - It'll help prevent rust and the like.

It's already been painted green by someone else, I was planning on spraying it matt back (to match the rest of the gun) and then just spraying the end cap to match the shrouds!

and as woody said if your using a real thompson mag leave a light coat of oil on it

I don't know what battery you need for that display, but my G&P kit PR counter takes a PP3 9v battery, which sits inside the magazine part of the shroud, next to the on/off switch for the counter.

Have a look at the bottom four pics on this page:

I have also seen a pair of AA batteries in a holder, with a 9V PP3 attachment socket.
Same job, different method.

Yep I used 2 AA batteries in a holder for mine, I think you have to add a resistor or something for the 9v battery as those LED displays are 2.5v.
Shame the two digit counters are hard to find with the black face as they look so much better than those grey ones.
I think others have put a coloured transparancy over the top to overcome this though.

Thanks guys! All very helpful stuff.

My real Thompson magazine arrived today (as I've already mentioned) and I tried it in the kit on my lunch break. Unfortunately the kit appears to have been made to suit an airsoft magazine as the end cover cap is very VERY loose on the real mag. When I tried it at my mate's house with his air-soft Thompson mag it was a perfect fit (Sadly his mag was too long so I cant steal that ;)) so it looks like I'm going to have to glue the cap onto the mag with lots of epoxy, or just not use it at all. :(

Looking at the available space in the shrouds, once the magazine is inserted I don't think there is going to be much space for batteries. I could chop a window in the mag and mount my battery holder inside it so I can remove the batteries easily. (Then I'll have to come up with some fancy connection system to get power from the mag/bettery pack in to the gun!

Maplin have the battery holders with the PP3 connector on the top for 2xAA batteries, but I'm thinking it might be wiser to use AAA batteries as they are smaller.

The build is half the fun but sometimes I just wish things would be easy! Hehehe!

batteries for mine were housed in a window i built in the shrouds behind the magazine towards the trigger
this was then covered over with the plate that goes there

Ahhhhh, good thinking! Will look at that on mine and see if that's possible!

RS Have some black faced ones the correct size... trouble is I'm not sure what the difference between "common cathode" or "common anode" is? Anyone know if it matters when it's only going to be a static display AND on a super-simple circuit? A mate of mine has an RS account so can get me these without any problems so I'll probably go this route.

Here is the link to the two items:

7 Segment Double Digit (Common Cathode)

7 Segment Double Digit (Common Anode)

No difference really, just the polarity. Meaning the common will either be the + or the - from your battery.

Not sure but the AAA batteries might not last very long if you use those.

All it means is that on the CC all the -ve sides of the LEDs for each digit are connected together and have one pin the +ve sides are seperate and have their own individual pin and vice versa for the CA.

Its due to the history of electronics changing the way circuits were laid out with common +ve or -ve rails.

For your purposes it doesn't matter which you get.

Thanks again (I'm saying that a lot at the moment, but it is really appreciated!)

Right, one last question... what's the best way to mount the display?

I assume it needs to be soldered on to a board of some kind but what is that board called?

I found this pic (one of Matsu's I believe) this is the stuff I'm looking for. What's it called?
