The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Been a while since i touched this, I thought i show here SOME progress .
So before going any further any imput to the shape or the size would be appreciated.
For comparison , the piece is next to BIRDIES type.
Also do not take any otice of the rectangular piece as this will be added at a later stage, trying to get the overall shape first.

hi guys, it is made from a foam which is resilient to products that have thinner and oil base.
So it wont melt, i got a scrap from somewhere last time for another project.
This can be coated and sanded with putty and it wont shrink .
It can be casted.
I was hoping to get some views on shape and size , and no it is not a crunchie!!!
We have crunchie here, it is a chocolate right??

It is high density PU foam.

Here's a link of a supplier in the US: http://www.precisionboard.com/

We use it a lot in industrial design for making mock ups.

I recommend 10lb foam for the durability.

Nice sculpt mars!

Let me know if you need advice on how to finish it smooth.

Hey guys, the camera has been in the friends shop for ever, I was going to make it in alloy last time , but it is too heavy and not cost efficient.
So if he ever finishes it, i will use the master alloy mold to cast them in either hollow resin or something light????
Great that some approve of the shape.
Yes please Matt , how do i make it smooth???
I was going to cover it in red putty , the one that is used for body works, or simply cast it and pull a resin mold to work off ?
But if I can do this one it saves one step.

I don't know if what you are using as a model is SA, but in your sculpt the triangle/snake-head looks a little shorter than the other piece.

other than that it looks great and wish I had sculpting talent

sorry Rob, what other piece? the rectangle ??
I was planning on using some other item for the rectangle, a perfect shape, I only did that to see how the head converted into the rectangle.
If I use a hollow square tube , you should be able to fit in the megatron part.
As long as the head is correct i will pull a cast and work from there.
I was waiting for Matt to contact me with ideas on smoothness!

To me "A" and "B" do not look the same size. Might just be the picture angle though

oh is that is what you meant Rob?
yes birdies is in my opinion very large, I went with taking measurements off the screen using some pics Harry had posted a while ago.
I was using that as reference so you guys see.
no offence to Birdie, but i just thought it was a little too big.

Okay Mars, here's some info for you and everyone else.

First, you need to seal the foam.
Use automotive clear coat or water/elmer's glue mix (milk consistency)

Second, spray the item with a catalyzed primer or high-build primer.

After sanding the primer, you can use bondo/glazing compound/etc to fix areas.

(try not to sand down to the foam again)

It is harder to sculpt with 10lb foam, but it is more durable easier to finish. (looks like you are using 5 lb)

Don't forget the radius edges on the square part of the eye piece. They are not sharp.

I think it would be very helpful to see your prototype held up to someone's face, or a mannequin head, or the like. That's really going to be the only way to accurately judge the proportion.

Lookin' good so far, though! Fingers crossed!

Thank you Sean!
Matt, around the rim I am planning it to be very thin, as I remember somewhere Harry had mentioned there was some type of plastic or rubber trim.
I will allow for this and then try and find a trim to suit.
I have hollowed it out and will ry and get a mold out soon enough and work from that as it is true , like Matt said , to work with the foam.

Correct - take a look at Harry's reference photos, and you can see some kind of rubber trim/skirt/gasket/what have you that helps the eyepiece stay put. I think Eagle found something similar to use for his display build. As I recall it wasn't 100% "screeeeen aaaaccurate" but certainly did the job.
