The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I suspect that'll be in initial peak, word of mouth and bad reviews will probably sink it soon. I don't know if this is the case, but were there any early reviews taken from advance copies of the game? Edge magazine have pointed out before that it's never a good sign when the publisher withholds code till the last minute.
As for the 'MW factor', metalalien gets it right by not saying MW2. It looks good, but it's short and the multiplayer implementation SUCKS. Some nights it can take 5mins just to find a game, and you can't play with the same group for 3 games in a row before the lobby closes.
The future looks bleak in many ways. Games will be more restricted, you'll play strictly by the creator's rules (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3177996). After a couple of years, the servers will be switched off (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/61792). You won't be able to resell your game (http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/18/sony-tries-out-new-anti-piracy-measure-with-psp-game-hits-used/). And the PC as a platform is becoming marginalised (http://www.edge-online.com/news/alan-wake-pc-cancelled).
It's good that there's an AVP game at all, the fans'll love it for sure on those grounds alone.

the only major complaint i have of the game is there is no split screen multiplayer. if i want to play a multiplayer mode, i have to play it via Xbox live. i hate how many games are going to this sort of multiplayer mode.

Honestly if your MAJOR nit-pick is that you can't shoulder your weapon, your reaching.

I thought it was a damn good game. Compelling story, suspenseful moments, moments of sheer OH CRAP! They ARE COMMING OUTTA THE WALLS moments.

i found it hard in the demo cause i didn't understand really what to do. playing the campaign for the marine, i learned how amazing block, melee, and shoot is. kills xenos so easy!

Demos are always harder since they don't give ya a quick key guide or anything its just sorta trial and error.

I do like the melee system, its better than the original AvP were you really didn't want the xeno's getting close even as a Pred.

Posted about ten pages ago about how much I hated the demo, but I still went and picked up a copy and followed some of the game-play advice given (thanks all). Was on the verge of chucking it out the window, when everything started to click and now I'm hooked.

I only really buy games to play on-line, which is why my collection of X-Box 360 titles extends to just 6 games. I've never got any enjoyment from playing against AI, so the campaigns on GRAW or COD4 are untouched. I just like to pit my wits against real people on-line, so that no two games are ever the same.

Anyway, once I'd got to grips with the controls (well, sort of), I started to enjoy the game. But the real difference came when I stumbled across a couple of Aliens and Predator fans in-game on Saturday night. We played through until 2am, blasting xenos and quoting lines back and fourth. Took the game to a whole new level. Makes a huge difference when people play the game properly, and don't faff about team killing and all that rubbish.

I guess there may be a few fans of the film on this here forum (just a hunch), so if anyone is looking to add a new friend (read cannon fodder) to their list, I use Hudson USCM as my tag. Dunno where I got that name from.

Let me know.

The controls were listed in the options section of the demo, but there should have been more advice on how to use stuff like focus, etc.

Does anyone else's game freeze up from time to time? It seems to be when I swing my view horizontally. I can still hear the audio but the image locks; this happens pretty much every time I play the game, which is rather frustrating as you can imagine! Nothing but a machine reboot will reset it.

Harry, are you running the game in DX11 mode? If you are and you don't have a DX11 compatible graphics card then it's a known problem and it happens so don't think it's just you. In the Steam games Menu, if you right click on AVP you should get a menu appear with the option of playing it in DX11 or DX9 mode. Try it in DX9 mode and see how you get on with that for starters. It certainly works for me.

Ah, thanks Chris - I'll try that. I have dual NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT cards running in SLI mode so I guess they're not DX11 compatible?

No they're not Harry, they're DX10 compatible. It just seems to be a problem with DX9/DX10 compatible cards running in the DX11 mode. The Devs are aware of it though. Also I hear there's a further problem with the game not recognising SLI setups so if that is indeed the case then your computer could only be using one of the cards :? There's a supposed fix for it as mentioned on the STEAM AVP forums ( disengage most of your brain before going there and wear a tin foil hat  ) here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1155867

I'm just running a single GTX260 so no need for me to try it so i can't comment on whether it works or not.

You'll note that I never said that I thought it was a good game. Only that I liked it. I play it because I like it. I have no idea why people who claim to dislike the game actually take the time to play or critique it.

And, multiplayer is by far the best aspect of the game. I think it's fun, interesting, balanced and relatively easy for new gamers to pickup. I just wish it was a little less fragile - i.e. Dedicated servers for the PC and host migration/redundancy on consoles.

No worries, it was just a light hearted dig after you'd done likewise to me ( that's how it was perceived anyway) with regards to knocking the game via long lists of faults which would in turn do wonders for getting ACM released

I dislike the game for the reasons I stated previously. Somewhat in line with what you said, I've never said that I hate it because I don't. There are parts of it I do like as in some of the multiplayer being good fun which I stated previously. Of course that doesn't mean that my opinion is the defining word on it because it isn't and anyone who thinks that their opinion is, well,is just talking bollocks. I don't quite see why someone who dislikes something shouldn't critique it though, especially if it's done constructively and not the usual 'This Sux - F*** you,w**k game, I'm getting a class action law suit lol , AVP killed my cat,my dad's gonna sort the Devs out, where's my damn refund' etc etc etc......followed by 'I've just spent 5 hours playing it and.....' Having a dislike of something shouldn't prevent someone from criticising it because if that were the case then criticism wouldn't pass the level of 'I like some if it but........' . Well that's just my view on it anyway.

Also, writing criticism that's based on actual experience and is objective doesn't always mean that it's done in order to gain some form of intellectual high ground over those that like it for what it is.I had a strange vision before writing this that I'd seen that on here somewhere  A well founded positive review has equal merit to a negative one and it's important to be receptive to both. However, if all someone can do is retort back with some half arsed generalised comment in order to try and look clever then quite frankly, f*** em

Sincerely, it's great that there are those that do like it and beyond that think it is a great game. The PC version desperatley needs some polish and TLC, as does the multiplayer. I cant comment on the console version as I don't own one. If Rebellion are smart they'll get these bugs and silly issues that should have never made it to the retail release sorted and that will improve this games standing a whole bunch in my eyes 8)

You're right - I've suspected that the only reason to repeatedly post at length about flaws that cannot be practically be fixed at this point is just a display of intellectual superiority; I really don't see much other purpose to it. Either that, or people just enjoy moaning. The only actual practical outcome will be to cause less astute/intelligent/discerning players to notice flaws when they wouldn't otherwise notice them, therefore reducing their enjoyment of the game - it's certainly affected me like that to some extent.

I mention the problems with multiplayer because they can (and hopefully will) be resolved/improved by a patch.

Are there XBOX 360 specific problems with the multiplayer or is it just like the PC where dedicated servers really are needed because of the connection/ping problems a lot of folks seem to be having?

When in a game, performance generally seems good to me (unless I run 8 bittorrents at the same time...). Sometimes it takes a few minutes to get in a game, but the main problem I see is that 1 in 5 games or more seem to end when the host leaves the game. Whether that is mostly due to the host's player actually quitting, or flakeyness in the implementation; I have no idea but either way it should be fixed.
