The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Clone the MW2 game engine at least for the Marine campaine, modify the graphics engine for the moody lighting, done.

The game as is, will be a nice collectible.. might replay the marine up until the queen boss level but beyond that so far zippo in terms of enjoyment.

Bish Bash Bosh. You make it sound so easy! :)

Tomorrow I'm gonna make a world-beating Formula 1 racing car out of my Honda Accord. It'll only take a change of tires and a little tuning to the motor. 30 minute job tops!

You are talking to the wrong guy. I'm the guy that taught himself how to design/build a supercharged blown alcohol Vtwin ATV. :)

I really like the "M260 Flamethrower" in the game. I might have to model one.

Impressive. Come round my place at 2pm tomorrow afternoon. I'll give you the keys to the Accord and it will be done by 2:30pm yes?

Let's not be obtuse. It was a metaphor to point out how absurd what you said was. Maybe you should teach yourself about computer graphics?

It doesn't occur to you that a huge part of a graphics engine's task is handling lighting, and that an engine designed for the rather flat and simple lighting in MW2 would have huge problems doing the lighting in AvP? And, because the MW2 engine doesn't have to worry about complex lighting, processing time can be spent elsewhere making other elements pretty? And that modifying something not designed for this sort of game would probably turn out awful, or would need a total rewrite?

Or in 10 years will I have to eat my words when every new videogame released is identical to COD:MW14 ?

Chip on your shoulder much? How do you know the next MW game won't have lighting as good as AVP? If every FPS game plays like MW I would be very happy. There is a reason it is considered the best.

You wanna go there, you want me to say it I will? I want an exact clone of MW but with Aliens. Screw the mood lighting, give me something that plays as good. I can't even friggen shoulder my weapon on AVP.. Honestly take away the franchise charactors from AVP and I wouldn't have looked twice. I would not be playing it.

Look i'll spell it out for you.... this thread is mostly for people who actually liked the game, and nobody really cares about why you didn't. So you can keep pointing out your reasoning for us "silly people who just enjoy games" but nobody is really paying attention. I can't really think of a reason as to why you'd want to shoulder your weapon on a planet where everything including Terminators is trying to kill you, but to each his own.

A hypothetical engine in the next MW game that can do high quality exteriors and moodily lit interiors would be amazing. How do you know that the next AvP game won't use that engine too?

We're not talking about the next versions of the games. We're talking about what we have. The MW2 engine does a great job of bright exteriors. The AvP game's engine, IMO, does a pretty fine job of doing dark interiors with moody lighting.

The assertion that one can be, apparently easily, modified to do the others job is as silly as kitting my Accord out as a Formula 1 racer or a farm tractor. Sorry.

Seriously everyone needs to relax. Its a video game, one that i remember no one wanted when it was announced because we all wanted Colonial Marines to be released instead.

We are just stating why we dont like it. You dont see us crashing down on the people that like the game. But i like your metaphor. The game is like a honda.

on first glance, it has a gravity gun look to it from half life 2. i LOVE the smart gun and sniper rifle too. also i found the pulse rifle is awesome w/o the hard sites. just melee attack and hit the xenos on the ground. easy kill!

It is a big debate we are having amongst developers atm. The market is changing, in a large part to the Modern Warfare juggernaut. The fact of the matter is that there is now a huge gulf between the AAA titles and those that are just doing the best they can. Look at the behind the scenes videos to titles like MW2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Halo Reach, Fable, Mass Effect, and you will see very large teams working away, on-site motion capture suites. These titles are now granted huge budgets, I often hear the figure of 60 million bandied about for MW2.

As much as it hurts to concede, Sega are not the powerhouse they once were, they can't put that sort of money behind a title. Rebellion don't have the staff scale of Infinity Ward or DICE. Gearbox have a more resources than Rebellion, and the focus of Colonial Marines looked tighter, so that may well be AAA in quality if it appears. Now, if we could just get the tax breaks in the UK that studios in Canada and Texas enjoy, maybe we could get back to producing great games. As it stands, we have now slipped from second to fourth, below South Korea with regards to game production.

With regards to engine, just having the tools and power is not enough. We were looking at finishing off a project, another studio had been using the Unreal engine to do a game. Huge in scope, but the team was only 20 people. As a result, the game quality was spread thin. The publisher cut it's loses and the game was mothballed. cost it £2.5 million, £1 million of that was the licensing of the unreal engine.

If people are so certain "how crap this game is and how simple it would be to make XYZ work/look better..."

Why don't they go off and do a better one?

If that were to happen, I'd be very bored. I've never clicked with the Call of Duty games. It does play well, and is considered one of the best shooters. Just not my cup of tea.

That said, I've noticed in my gaming community MW2 fatigue. They seem to be lapping up AvP atm as a nice change of pace.

Looks like I'm not the only one in the UK with undemanding tastes, underdeveloped criticism glands and a soft spot for Xenos. The game has beaten "Just Dance: Wii" ( ) and "Bioshock 2" ( down from #1) to top the UK all-format charts and become the fastest selling game of 2010.

Nor mine.

Also, if it did play like MW2 but with Xenos, then some would complain that "it's just MW2 with different textures for the enemies! I want something NEW! Wah-wah-wah!" etc., etc.
