The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

lol, are we really having this debate?

Considering a lot of us were at the Aliens display at the London Film and Comic-Con, have seen, handled, or own, original props, worked for Fox on various Aliens related projects, as well as Master Replicas (which had to get the color approved by the studio), the color was most definitely a brown-bess mixture. IIRC, the weapons weren't painted from the little tins, but from a mixture made by a paint shop.

There are some original shots we used for the dvd on my site here if you want to check them out:

Just adding to Willie's comments...

Having been to Bapty a few times (BOTH the original Bapty & Co Harrow Road location prior to Tony Watts aquiring the company and the current location of Bapty in Norwood Green) and having handled BOTH the practical and non practical Pulse Rifles long before Tony considered selling them, it's safe to say that they are colour matched painted to BB.

Simon Atherton has also confirmed this fact to me in person on the set of Band Of Brothers, as has Terry Reed when Harry and I popped in and saw him at Pinewood on a couple of occasions, and Terry reiterated this fact when he came round to my house.

It should be noted that the armourers responsible for the Pulse Rifles on Aliens have not worked for Bapty since the late 1990's.

The last left and became freelancers when the company was sold to Tony Watts.

This and the overwhelming evidence provided by Harry, Willie and others should be enough to lay this to rest.

RE: the Sentry Gun battery, it was based on a US Army Radio, that was already painted in OD.

Sorry to bring this controversial subject up again but I need your advice guys.

Ive been scratchbuilding a racal headset for my sixthscale Hicks figure and am almost ready to start painting it up. I have a tin of Humbrol 170 BB but Im not sure wether to us it or not. To gauge the colour in person and see how it compares to the factory painted pulse rifle, tracker etc, I first painted up a 1/6 belt tool. When it was fully dried I was shocked by the results, to me it looks a very dark brown and Im hesitiant to use it on my headset.

So what should I do guys, paint it in BB or find a better match (OD) to the restof his gear? Thanks and sorry for for stiring the pot again lol

If it was me i would go with BB, the originals were that colour, as to it being very dark brown, try looking at it in different lighting conditions, in one light it will appear brown, in others it looks green, to say the colour is a pain in the rear is an understatement.

Nice headset by the way :)

cheers

Highlight it with progressive drybrushing, lightening the base colour with white highlights to simulate scale llighting...or just lighten the base BB colour.

I spent some time over at FX-Sabers to get my new Mace Windu powered up. It turns out we are not the only ones who have "Yes but that in only how the film makes it look, the real color is..." issue

A: The blade on both the Vader EP4 and Vader EP5 are red. In fact, they are a beautiful bright red. There are pictures/Videos circulating around the internet that show the blades as being orange, but that is only because of the way the cameras interpret the color.

IMO:

Screen Used = The actual colour the prop was painted.
Screen Accurate = The colour it appeared to be in the film.

A good example of how different this can be is the very dark, obvious brown used to create a realistic red shade for the blood used in Hitchcock's Psycho.

In the BB vs OD argument, the difference isn't that vast to the casual observer, so IMO it falls down to personal preference.
For the record, I prefer OD for props I'm taking to a Drop, but I'd probably use BB if I was filming something.

I regard SU and SA as the same thing.

Then there's 'Real World': what it would actually be if it were in the real world. :)

i.e. OD. :P :P :P

I only make the difference between SU and SA because a 'Screen Used' prop tends to be (or end up) a scatty, ragged, chipped, peeling shambles and is often a different colour compared to the SA ideal of what it should look like in the film.

Whatever works, though.

It would huh? :P Everybody and their mother seems to be showing off or wanting brown (flat dark earth or coyote brown) or tan colors for their firearms these days. Don't see much in the way of green/OD  Usually black, brown, and olive drab are offered by the manufacturers when a factory color option is available, but they seem to market and push the brown stuff heavily.

They only want brown coz of the current theatres of conflict.

The L85 has been in OD for ages. That's probably why I prefer OD, actually...
