The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Ok here's a little side project of mine that's about 80% done-

We've seen dropship pilots, but the dropship is the "workhorse" of the USCM (the allegory being they are like the Huey helicopters of the Vietnam war). I figure the USCM must have some "fast movers" such as the Harriers or Hornets of the modern era- or at least the F4 Phantoms or F105 Thunderchiefs of the Nam era.

So this is my impression of a USCM aviator:

Image

The flightsuit is an RAF Mk 14 suit that I recently scored from a seller in the UK. I have the patchesnpins subdued Screaming Eagle and Delta on it as well as a subdued US flag on the left shoulder.

Image

O2 mask in place. I have black Nomex flight gloves on.

Image

I've put on my M1969 flak vest for effect here- however I'm on the lookout for a proper survival vest (this isn't a dropship pilot impression after all  )- hopefully something I can attach my canvas VP70 holster to. Steel toe parade boots round out the impression.

The helmet was an old Canadian CF-18 pilot helmet that I've had for ages. it was originally gray and I had painted it black-

Image

I repainted it with Model Masters OD:

Image

"Angriest Angel" is from the Space: Above and Beyond episode of the same name (my favourite episode of that series by the way).

Image

I decided to scratch make the O2 mask myself. I could have purchased a surplus O2 mask off ebay for not too much cash- but the problem was the connecting pins would have to match my helmet for them to work. Finding a correct CF mask is slim and would most likely be megabucks.

My O2 mask started out as an AO Safety respirator half mask like this:

Image

I removed the filters, painted the clear strap housing black, and replaced the white elastic straps with black ones. The main tube is simply ribbed tubing.

I still have to add a set of nametapes (from 1800nametape) to my flightsuit when they arrive. I'm also going to put the subdued Sulaco patch on the left chest. Haven't really decided if I want to add a rank patch or not. Fighter pilots are usually officers- but since a dropship pilot can be a corporal I guess I could go either way with this.

I'm also on the fence if I want to add greebles to the helmet. I kinda want to leave it as is for the moment. Even if I were to add something- it would be bits and pieces of things that I think would "look cool" and not something like the incredible work going on in the Dropship Helmet thread. :)

Another USCM project in the bag. Feels really good to have this on. Guess I'll always be a zoomie at heart eh Mike?

Thanks guys! :)

Gives me some ideas for the colony sweep... Maybe the squad could be going after a downed pilot cornered by some Xenos? Then it truly would be a rescue mission. 8)

I'm checking garage sales for one of these...

Great costume, Kev. Wish I knew about the survival vest cause I had a few a couple of years ago that got traded. Check out this gun website Canadian Gun Nutz, register then post a wanted ad in the "Exchange of Other Stuff" section. You just may get lucky!

Yeah, I noticed with the blue T-Shirt
Hope to see it put together for Polaris. Will make the colony sweep interesting.

Mike- Thanks for the link. I'll see if I can pick one up in Toronto first.

Matt- Just my VP70. Again I figure a pilot wouldn't be heavily armed and would just have a hold-out weapon at best. Maybe a K-Bar too.

Thanks again guys!

Oh.My.God.

That is a fantastic scratch build Kev! Well done!

I never would have known it wasn't a real o2 mask by looking at your finished photo.

Again, well done!

If that's the mission, I think the Sarge will become a xeno host. I would rather rescue juicy colonist daughters from their virginity...not USCM aviators
For your survival vest, toss that K-Bar then get with the USCM theme and pack your Gerber MK2.

Mike beat me to this. I understand the reason for the quote... It was just sooooooo wrong in this context.

Any female members of the squad are more than welcome to rescue me on that aspect... Otherwise I would rather you toss me an M40 and go on without me.

Mike- thanks for the virtual "slap back to reality" (I needed that)- I'll pack my Gerber! 8)

Or an M9 Phrobis bayonet. It's accurate to the Alien vs Predator 2 PC game. :)

Now that kicks ass!

I think you should use the flak vest when possible, it looks good with the rest of the usit.

And I agree, that O2 mask looks very realistic, I wouldn't have known it was otherwise if you hadn't said something.

Good work Kev!
